Functional liquid absorbents for CO2 capture and catalytic conversion: from organic amines to porous liquids.

The continuous rise in CO2 emissions has led to severe global climate challenges, making the capture and conversion of CO2 a critical pathway toward carbon neutrality and sustainable development. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in CO2 capture and catalytic conversion using four representative media, including organic amine solutions, ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and porous liquids (PLs). Organic amine solutions, as the most mature CO2 absorption technology, are still limited by high regeneration energy consumption and severe equipment corrosion. ILs

[Research progress and clinical application potential of silicon-based microring resonators in biomedical detection].

Silicon-based microring resonator (SMRR), as a typical application of label-free detection in optical biosensors, performs advantages such as small size, high sensitivity, and ease of integration, making it suitable for detecting physical, chemical, and biological signals. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with high concealment, while early intervention can effectively slow its progression. For early diagnosis of AD, optical detection platforms based on SMRR can effectively overcome the challenges posed by low-abundance biomarkers and interfering factors in blood

Designing and deploying caller tunes on mobile phones to promote malaria vaccine uptake in Africa: can the technology acceptance model (TAM) help?

Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, with millions of cases and high mortality rates annually, especially in low-income countries. Africa bears a substantial burden, with direct costs of malaria among children under five reaching millions of dollars in countries like Ghana, Tanzania, and Kenya. In 2021, over 610,000 malaria-related deaths were reported, 96% of which occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite existing interventions, such as long-lasting insecticidal nets, indoor residual spraying, and intermittent preventive treatment, the re-emergence of malaria underscores the

Elucidating the utility of neuro-navigation in reducing malposition rates in Ommaya reservoir placement: 23-year operative experience at the Louisiana State University.

OBJECTIVES: Variability exists with the use of neuro-navigation in the placement of Ommaya reservoir. In the setting of recent healthcare reforms in the United States that are focused on cost-containment strategies, we discuss from our experience at the Louisiana State University, Shreveport, if the use of high-cost stealth-guided navigation technique reduces malposition rates over free-hand placement. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort analyses on 146 patients that underwent placement of Ommaya reservoir between 1991 and 2014 using free-hand and neuro-navigated technique was perfor

Gene Therapy for Neuromuscular Diseases: Health Economic Challenges and Future Perspectives.

Highly efficacious, potentially curative gene therapies holds immense clinical promise, but also present complex challenges. At the time of regulatory approval and health technology assessment (HTA), evidence of efficacy and safety of gene therapies is often uncertain. In addition, research, development, and manufacturing costs, small pools of eligible patients, and the fact that many gene therapies are administered only once means that they frequently are associated with very high "one-off" price points. Although only a limited number of products have been brought to market globally, hundreds

Lung Mechanics Tracking With Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) Based on CMOS Synchronous Demodulation Principle.

In this paper, an area-efficient CMOS integrated solution for lung impedance extraction is presented. The lock-in principle is leveraged for its high effective bandpass selectivity, to acquire information about the airways, through stimulation by FOT (Forced Oscillation Technique). The modulated pressure and flow signals are down-converted by a quadrature voltage commutating passive mixer-first receiver. In addition to its linearity, and unlike the Gilbert cell, it can be biased at zero dc current to alleviate flicker noise contributions. The proposed solution is designed and fabricated in 0.1

NASCarD (Nanopore Adaptive Sampling with Carrier DNA): A Rapid, PCR-Free Method for SARS-CoV-2 Whole-Genome Sequencing in Clinical Samples.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) represents the main technology for SARS-CoV-2 lineage characterization in diagnostic laboratories worldwide. The rapid, near-full-length sequencing of the viral genome is commonly enabled by high-throughput sequencing of PCR amplicons derived from cDNA molecules. Here, we present a new approach called NASCarD (Nanopore Adaptive Sampling with Carrier DNA), which allows a low amount of nucleic acids to be sequenced while selectively enriching for sequences of interest, hence limiting the production of non-target sequences. Using COVID-19 positive samples available d

Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections.

Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections are complex medical problems that are increasingly encountered. They are associated with significant morbidity and mortality with tremendous economic cost. The current review will emphasize the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this clinical entity using the relatively limited evidence that is currently available. Because there is a paucity of high quality evidence regarding prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of CIED infections, this review will attempt to summarize the best evidence as well as to suggest, when possible, paradigms

From cellular heterogeneity to precision medicine: single-cell multi-omics in CNS disease research.

Single-cell sequencing and multi-omics technologies are revolutionizing research on central nervous system (CNS) diseases by enabling high-resolution analysis of cellular heterogeneity and molecular dynamics. Traditional technologies (e.g., bulk sequencing, routine histology) often lack cellular resolution, fail to capture heterogeneity among individual cells, and struggle to reveal subtle molecular changes in early pathogenesis, limiting their ability to clarify complex CNS disease mechanisms and develop precise diagnostic tools. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest advances in s

Application of bioelectrical impedance detection techniques: Cells and tissues.

Pathological conditions in organisms often arise from various cellular or tissue abnormalities, including dysregulation of cell numbers, infections, aberrant differentiation, and tissue pathologies such as lung tumors and skin tumors. Thus, developing methods for analyzing and identifying these biological abnormalities presents a significant challenge. While traditional bioanalytical methods such as flow cytometry and magnetic resonance imaging are well-established, they suffer from inefficiencies, high costs, complexity, and potential hazards. To address these challenges, bioelectrical impeda

Beyond screening for chromosomal abnormalities: Advances in non-invasive diagnosis of single gene disorders and fetal exome sequencing.

Emerging genomic technologies, largely based around next generation sequencing (NGS), are offering new promise for safer prenatal genetic diagnosis. These innovative approaches will improve screening for fetal aneuploidy, allow definitive non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) of single gene disorders at an early gestational stage without the need for invasive testing, and improve our ability to detect monogenic disorders as the aetiology of fetal abnormalities. This presents clinicians and scientists with novel challenges as well as opportunities. In addition, the transformation of prenatal g

Artificial intelligence-based waste detection in robotic surgery: a pilot validation study of computer vision technology.

Cost containment remains critical for widespread adoption of robotic surgery, yet operating room waste of single-use supplies represents a significant source of unnecessary expenditure that is often overlooked. Traditional waste tracking relies on time-intensive direct observation, limiting scalability and consistency. We developed and validated AIMs, a computer vision-based system designed to automatically detect and quantify robotic stapler load waste on the surgical back table. This prospective validation study evaluated system accuracy in detecting robotic stapler loads during 18 consecuti
