BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis may lead to elevated intracranial pressure, which may be implicated with impaired neurocognitive development. However, accurately measuring intracranial pressure is challenging, and patterns in craniosynostosis patients are poorly characterized. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography may enable noninvasive assessment of intracranial pressure in pediatric patients with craniosynostosis.
METHODS: Pediatric patients with craniosynostosis undergoing surgical intervention between 2014 and 2019 prospectively underwent optical coherence tomographic evaluation. Intr

PURPOSE: The purpose was to describe the in vivo microanatomy of typical and atypical chorioretinal and juxtapapillary colobomas in the dog.
METHODS: Three cross-breed dogs were found to be affected with colobomas. Two of the cases were NEHJ1 homozygous and Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) affected and had the typical optic nerve head colobomas seen with the disease. The third case had an unexpected atypical coloboma. In vivo retinal photography and non-invasive retinal imaging by confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were done, and the eye affected with

Advancements in intracochlear diagnostics, as well as prosthetic and regenerative inner ear therapies, rely on a good understanding of cochlear microanatomy. The human cochlea is very small and deeply embedded within the densest skull bone, making nondestructive visualization of its internal microstructures extremely challenging. Current imaging techniques used in clinical practice, such as MRI and CT, fall short in their resolution to visualize important intracochlear landmarks, and histological analysis of the cochlea cannot be performed on living patients without compromising their hearing.

Conjunctival infestation of ticks is not a common event, even in endemic regions. We presented a case of conjunctival tick attachment treatment guided by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). This patient experienced a two-day history of pain, itching and redness in the right eye. Anterior segment examination revealed a tick body in the lower bulbar conjunctiva. No invasion of the sclera was confirmed with anterior segment SD-OCT. Tick was removed with conjunctival excision. We would like to state that the use of SD-OCT can be useful in clinical practice for safe and complete

While embryo transfer (ET) is widely practiced, many of the transferred embryos fail to develop in cattle. To establish a more effective method for selecting bovine embryos for ET, here we quantified morphological parameters of living embryos using three-dimensional (3D) images non-invasively captured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Seven Japanese Black embryos produced by in vitro fertilization that had reached the expanded blastocyst stage after 7 days of culture were transferred after imaged by OCT. Twenty-two parameters, including thickness and volumes of the inner cell mass, trophe

Integrated intraoperative anterior segment optical coherence tomography is an extremely valuable tool that can be used by corneal surgeons when performing pediatric lamellar corneal transplant surgery. This chapter will demonstrate its use in infants and children with a variety of corneal diseases. These diseases include congenital corneal opacities such as Peters' anomaly (both types I and II), surgical management of limbal dermoids, and its use in selective corneal transplant surgery such as DALK (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty) or DSEK (Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty). The

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a sensitive method for quantifying retinal neuronal and axonal structures. Reductions in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses have a reported association with white and grey matter atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS). We hypothesized that the thinning of intraretinal layer measurements associates with cognitive decline in MS patients with no prior event of optic neuritis (ON).
METHODS: OCT and NeuroTrax computerized cognitive assessments were performed in 204 relapsing remitting MS patient

Ocular abnormalities occur frequently in Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA), although visual symptoms are not always reported. We evaluated a cohort of patients with FRDA to characterise the clinical phenotype and optic nerve findings as detected with optical coherence tomography (OCT). A total of 48 patients from 42 unrelated families were recruited. Mean age at onset was 13.8 years (range 4-40), mean disease duration 19.5 years (range 5-43), mean disease severity as quantified with the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia 22/40 (range 4.5-38). All patients displayed variable ataxia and two-

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Investigating mutation carriers with Dutch-type hereditary (D-) cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), offers the possibility to identify markers in pre- and symptomatic stages of CAA. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has shown potential to detect retinal changes in several neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the present exploratory study was to investigate thinning of retinal layers as a possible (early) biomarker in D-CAA mutation carriers.
METHODS: Twenty-one D-CAA mutation carriers (n = 8 presymptomatic, n = 13 symptomatic, median age 50 years) and nine controls (

This paper reports on the latest advances in line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT), a recently invented imaging technology that now allows the generation of either horizontal (x × y) section images at an adjustable depth or vertical (x × z) section images at an adjustable lateral position, as well as three-dimensional images. For both two-dimensional imaging modes, images are acquired in real-time, with real-time control of the depth and lateral positions. Three-dimensional (x × y × z) images are acquired from a stack of horizontal section images. The device is in the form

BACKGROUND/AIM: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and Helicobacter pylori screening are routine parts of the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing bariatric surgery at many centers around the world. The reason for this step is to identify abnormalities that may change the surgical approach. In this study, we aim to evaluate the extent to which endoscopic findings and H. pylori testing affect the plan of care in bariatric patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the investigational processes of 356 patients planned for bariatric surgery (2014-2016) at our center. Pat
