The aim of the presented pilot study was to examine possible stimulatory effect of He-Ne laser on the immune system. Eight patients suffering from chronic tonsilitis were within 9 days subjected to three consecutive doses of laser irradiation of tonsils and several immune parameters were determined prior to the treatment, shortly after its cessation and after 4 weeks of follow-up period. This work values the efficacy of a test to confirm rapid diagnosis (30 minutes) of streptococcal pharyngitis. Authors selected 100 children in a office of primary health care whose ages were between two and seven years, from February to July in 1986. Thermography was done to 131 patients with chronic tonsillitis (simple form in 46, toxico-allergic in 85). The main thermographic sign of this disease is temperature lowered by more than 1 degree C (2.2 degrees C on an average) in the proximal third of the phalanx as compared to that in the dorsal surface of the hand at the level of metacarpophalangeal articulations. A 15-year-old boy had reported episodes of tonsillitis with group C streptococci over a four-month period. The tonsillitis cleared with antibiotic therapy but was followed by a recurrence within a few days. Tonsillectomy resulted in a permanent cure and group C streptococcus was found in the tonsils. A literature search has failed to reveal similar cases and a brief review of the existing literature is given.
