Treatment outcomes of various force applications in growing patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue changes between intraoral light force application and extraoral heavy force application in growing patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion. MATERIALS AND: Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric data from 50 subjects with skeletal Class III malocclusion. In the first group (15 boys, 10 girls; 8.67 ± 2.13 years old), each subject wore a biocreative horseshoe appliance (CHS) with two Class III elastics that exerted a force of 200 g. In the second group (13 boys,

Prevalence of Malocclusion in Primary Dentition in Southeast Part of Haryana, India: A Cross-sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of malocclusion in primary dentition of children in southeast part of Haryana state in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 1,540 children of age 3-5 years from 10 nursery and 10 primary schools were selected across Rohtak city. The children were selected by stratified random technique and examined at their respective schools. Oral examination was done to record the parameters such as molar relation, canine relation, crowding, spacing, midline shift, overjet, overbite, rotations, supernumerary teeth, tooth wear, anterior crossbi…

3D effects of a bone-anchored intra-oral protraction in treating class III growing patient: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective case series study is to assess the three-dimensional (3D) skeletal and soft tissue effects of the alternate rapid maxillary expansion and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) protocol in conjunction with a miniscrew-supported class III elastic wear in class III growing patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen consecutive participants (mean age 12.05 ± 1.09 years), who displayed class III malocclusions with retrognathic maxillae, were recruited. A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was acquired before commencing treatment (T1). All participants were treated

High diversity in cretaceous ichthyosaurs from Europe prior to their extinction.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyosaurs are reptiles that inhabited the marine realm during most of the Mesozoic. Their Cretaceous representatives have traditionally been considered as the last survivors of a group declining since the Jurassic. Recently, however, an unexpected diversity has been described in Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous deposits, but is widely spread across time and space, giving small clues on the adaptive potential and ecosystem control of the last ichthyosaurs. The famous but little studied English Gault Formation and 'greensands' deposits (the Upper Greensand Formation and the Cambrid

Prospective 10-year cohort study based on a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) on implant-supported full-arch maxillary prostheses. part II: prosthetic outcomes and maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Long-term follow-up studies (i.e., over 5 years), focusing on prosthetic outcomes and maintenance of implant-supported reconstructions in the edentulous maxilla, are scarce in the literature. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and report 10-year data on outcomes and maintenance of screw-retained implant-supported full-arch casted titanium-resin prostheses in the edentulous maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the randomized control trial cohort of 24 patients, the outcome and maintenance of 23 bridges were registered. RESULTS: One patient dropped out of the study p

Sleeve gastrectomy … ounteract potential periodontal benefits and may increase competing risks such as caries or erosive tooth wear. Conclusions: The SG-gut-oral axis-periodontal pathway is a biologically plausible working hypothesis rather than a proven causal pathway in humans. SIGNIFICANCE: This study introduces a novel methodology for analysing tooth wear on natural enamel surfaces using a custom-built mould as a reference. A Novel Method to Accelerate Orthodontic Tooth Movement Using Low-Intensity Direct Electrical Current in Patients Requiring en-Masse Retraction of the Upper Anterior Teeth: A Preliminary Clinical Report.

BACKGROUND: Shortening the duration of orthodontic treatment by speeding up the rate of tooth movement has become an essential goal for both orthodontists and patients. This preliminary report aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of a new intraoral removable electrical device in accelerating the en-masse retraction of the upper anterior teeth using low-intensity direct electrical current. METHODS: This prospective preliminary interventional clinical study was conducted at the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Damascus University, Syria, between March 2019 and Febr

Parrotfish play important ecological roles in coral reef and seagrass communities across the globe. Their dentition is a fascinating object … r bone at later stages of dental ontogeny. The occurrence of plicidentine and evidence of extensive tooth wear, and even breakage, lead us to conclude that the fangs undergo frequent mechanical stress, despite not being used to acquire food. This strong mechanical stress undergone by fangs could be linked either to forced contact with congeners or with the l …

Pre-radiotherapy dental extractions in patients with head and neck cancer: a Delphi study.

OBJECTIVES: To gain a consensus from consultants in restorative dentistry about the types of teeth that should be extracted from head and neck cancer patients (HNC) pre-radiotherapy. MATERIALS: Literature- and clinician-informed questionnaires were emailed to an 'expert panel' of consultants (n = 24/28; 86%) in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland on three consecutive occasions (Delphi rounds). The results of Round 1 were used to revise the questionnaire that was distributed in Round 2, and this procedure was repeated for Round 3. During Rounds 2 and 3, participants were asked to indicate, on

Enamel ultrastructure in fossil cetaceans (Cetacea: Archaeoceti and Odontoceti).

The transition from terrestrial ancestry to a fully pelagic life profoundly altered the body systems of cetaceans, with extreme morphological changes in the skull and feeding apparatus. The Oligocene Epoch was a crucial time in the evolution of cetaceans when the ancestors of modern whales and dolphins (Neoceti) underwent major diversification, but details of dental structure and evolution are poorly known for the archaeocete-neocete transition. We report the morphology of teeth and ultrastructure of enamel in archaeocetes, and fossil platanistoids and delphinoids, ranging from late Oligocene

Severe dental fluorosis in juvenile deer linked to a recent volcanic eruption in Patagonia.

The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic eruption deposited large amounts of tephra (ashes) on about 36 million ha of Argentina in June of 2011. Tephra was considered chemically innoxious based on water leachates, surface water fluoride levels were determined to be safe, and livestock losses were attributable to inanition and excessive tooth wear. To evaluate effects on wild ungulates, we sampled wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) at 100 km from the volcano in September-November 2012. We show that tephra caused severe dental fluorosis, with bone fluoride levels up to 5,175 ppm. Among subadults, tephra c…

A cross-sectional study: non-carious cervical lesions, cervical dentine hypersensitivity and related risk factors.

The present survey aims to study the prevalence and clinical characteristics of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and cervical dentine hypersensitivity (CDH), as well as their possible risk factors in a general population in China. A total of 1023 subjects were included in the present study. Each subject completed a structured interview, and all teeth of each subject were examined by a practitioner to determine NCCLs and CDH. Teeth with NCCLs and CDH were diagnosed according to the tooth wear index and by a blast of air from a triple syringe, respectively. Binary logistic regression was com…
