Numerical study of the effects of minor structures and mean velocity fields in the cerebrospinal fluid flow.

The importance of optimizing intrathecal drug delivery is highlighted by its potential to improve patient health outcomes. Findings from previous computational studies, based on an individual or a small group, may not be applicable to the wider population due to substantial geometric variability. Our study aims to circumvent this problem by evaluating an individual's cycle-averaged Lagrangian velocity field based on the geometry of their spinal subarachnoid space. It has been shown by Lawrence et al. (J Fluid Mech 861:679-720, 2019) that dominant physical mechanisms, such as steady streaming a

Development of raw-image ray-bundling for focused and unfocused plenoptic 3D-PTV.

This paper introduces a new plenoptic 3D particle tracking velocimetry (3D-PTV) technique called raw-image ray-bundling (RIRB), which combines the 3D clustering algorithm of light-field ray-bundling (LFRB) with the raw image segmentation concept of epipolar triangular connectivity (ETC). The combined approach provides flexibility towards accommodating both unfocused and focused plenoptic cameras. Additionally, the RIRB algorithm bypasses the computational step of perspective-view generation in LFRB, thereby allowing lower specification microlens arrays (MLA) to be used without excessive loss o

Multifocal visual evoked potentials in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis: A review.

Multifocal visual evoked potential (mf-VEP) represents a new approach to the classical full field (ff-)VEP with separate responses from up to 60 sectors of the visual field. A thorough literature survey of the use of mf-VEP in optic neuritis (ON) and multiple sclerosis (MS) is presented (38 published studies were retrieved). Mf-VEP provides direct topographical information of specific lesions and facilitates investigations on structural-functional correlations thus providing new methods for exploring the interplay between demyelination, atrophy and remyelination in MS. Good correlation was sho

Application of swine manure on agricultural fields contributes to extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli spread in Tai'an, China.

The prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) is increasing rapidly in both hospital environments and animal farms. A lot of animal manure has been directly applied into arable fields in developing countries. But the impact of ESBL-positive bacteria from animal manure on the agricultural fields is sparse, especially in the rural regions of Tai'an, China. Here, we collected 29, 3, and 10 ESBL-producing E. coli from pig manure, compost, and soil samples, respectively. To track ESBL-harboring E. coli from agricultural soil, these isolates of differ

A femtosecond time-resolved Bragg coherent diffraction imaging experimental setup at PAL-XFEL for nanoscale lattice dynamics studies.

We report on the design and operational characterization of a femtosecond time-resolved Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (tr-BCDI) setup at the XSS beamline of PAL-XFEL, aimed at enabling direct nanoscale visualization of ultrafast lattice dynamics in individual nanocrystals. The pump-probe temporal resolution was evaluated via time-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements on a Bi (003) epitaxial thin film, confirming a timing precision better than 60 fs through the observation of coherent phonon oscillations. The static coherent imaging capability was benchmarked by reconstructing thre

Discussion on "Infectious medical waste characterization using X-ray transmission with Machine learning".

This article is a discussion on the non-contact automated characterization framework for infectious healthcare waste by Vielsack et al. (2026). Two critical scientific and operational boundaries are critically analyzed while recognizing their pioneering combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and machine learning in field conditions. First, single-energy XRT technology limitations hinder fine-grained polymer discrimination; overlapping attenuation profiles cannot differentiate high-value recyclable polymers from problematic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), risking contamination of downstream mechanic

Twist-encoded magnetic plasmon interferometry for label-free, orientation-resolved single-molecule imaging.

Molecular twist-related rotational dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces governs recognition, dissipation, and barrier crossing, yet direct label-free visualization of single-molecule torsion remains challenging. Here, we present twist-encoded magnetic plasmon interferometry (TEMPi), which converts nanorod twist near a metal film into a phase-encoded, orientation-resolved optical signal. Near-field coupling between a gold nanorod and its mirror image in the film excites a localized magnetic plasmon, enabling quantitative mapping of probe twist to interferometric phase. Wide-field, label-free ope

Digital immunoassays with continuous-scanning video microscopy for simultaneous detection of three antibiotics in milk.

Multidimensional encoding of microspheres, as a novel signal output element, has demonstrated excellent detection performance; however, conventional microscopic counting methods for encoded microspheres are still limited by narrow fields of view, limited sampling coverage, and missed detection. To address these challenges, we developed an artificial intelligence-assisted microscopic video-stream digital immunoassay system. In this system, the size and color of microspheres are used for channel identification, while the counted number of microspheres serves as the digital signal for target quan

Alkalinity enhancement with sodium hydroxide in coastal ocean waters.

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is increasingly recognised as essential for achieving net zero emissions to limit the impacts of climate change. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) presents a potentially scalable marine CDR (mCDR) technique. Here we report on the first OAE field trial in Australia, conducted at a coastal site in Tasmania using continuous addition of aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The resulting plume of modified seawater was effectively tracked, and changes in surface carbonate chemistry were quantified using a containerised laboratory. At the point of NaOH release, partial press

Role of side-slip flight in target pursuit: blue-tailed damselflies (Ischnura elegans) avoid body rotation while approaching a moving perch.

Visually guided flight control requires processing changes in the visual panorama (optic-flow) resulting from self-movement relative to stationary objects, as well as from moving objects passing through the field of view. We studied the ability of the blue-tailed damselfly, Ischnura elegans, to successfully land on a perch moving unpredictably. We tracked the insects landing on a vertical pole moved linearly 6 cm back and forth with sinusoidal changes in velocity. When the moving perch changed direction at frequencies higher than 1 Hz, the damselflies engaged in manoeuvres that typically invol

Frontal eye field lesions impair predictive and visually-guided pursuit eye movements.

The study initially explored the frontal eye field's (FEF) control of predictive eye movements, i.e., eye movements driven by previous rather than current sensory signals. Five monkeys were trained to pursue horizontal target motion, including sinusoidal targets and "random-walk" targets which sometimes deviated from a sine motion. Some subjects also tracked other target trajectories and optokinetic motion. FEF ablations or cold lesions impaired predictive pursuit, but also degraded visually guided foveal pursuit of all targets. Unilateral lesions impaired pursuit of targets moving in both hor

Speckle-Tracking Strain Analysis for Mapping Spatiotemporal Contractility of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC)-Derived Cardiomyocytes.

Human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) hold tremendous potential for cardiovascular disease modeling, drug screening, personalized medicine, and pathophysiology studies. The availability of a robust protocol and functional assay for studying phenotypic behavior of hiPSC-CMs is essential for establishing an in vitro disease model. Many heart diseases manifest due to changes in the mechanical strain of cardiac tissue. Therefore, non-invasive evaluation of the contractility properties of hiPSC-CMs remains crucial to gain an insight into the pathogenesis of

fMRI-based prediction of eye gaze during naturalistic movie viewing reveals eye-movement-related brain activity.

BACKGROUND: Eye gaze provides crucial insights into perceptual and cognitive processes during naturalistic movie viewing, yet concurrent eye tracking is often unavailable in functional MRI (fMRI) research. While deep learning models can estimate gaze directly from fMRI eyeball signals, their out-of-the-box generalizability across heterogeneous datasets requires empirical evaluation. METHODS: We applied a specific pre-trained model from the DeepMReye framework in a zero-shot setting (without dataset-specific fine-tuning) to estimate gaze during movie watching across three independent fMRI data

Eyes ahead: a scoping review of technologies enabling humanoid robots to follow human gaze.

Gaze is a fundamental aspect of non-verbal communication in human interaction, playing an important role in conveying attention, intentions, and emotions. A key concept in gaze-based human interaction is joint attention, the focus of two individuals on an object in a shared environment. In the context of human-robot interaction (HRI), gaze-following has become a growing research area, as it enables robots to appear more socially intelligent, engaging, and likable. While various technical approaches have been developed to achieve this capability, a comprehensive overview of existing implementat

Wearable Augmented Reality for Dental Implant Navigation: From Experimental Models to Clinical Application-A Scoping Review.

Background: Accurate three-dimensional positioning of dental implants is fundamental for long-term prosthetic success. While static guided surgery and traditional dynamic navigation present intrinsic limitations related to physical bulk or hand-eye coordination (the "look-away" phenomenon), Augmented Reality (AR) via Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) promises to overcome these barriers by superimposing virtual holograms directly onto the surgical field. Objectives: The aim of this scoping review is to map the existing literature to evaluate the positioning accuracy, workflow efficiency, and ergonom

Optimising indicated prevention for child anxiety and depression: A 12-month follow-up for cluster-randomised factorial 2 x 2 x 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention can reduce the burden of internalising problems for children and adolescents, yet access remains limited. The field must ensure preventive interventions that are both durable and scalable. One promising approach is developing interventions that are less resource- intensive yet retain components that are active in the long-term, enabling both sustained effects and wider reach. METHODS: Through a 2 x 2 x 2 cluster-randomised factorial trial (www.clinicaltrials.gov NCT04263558) aimed at optimising an indicated child-focused group-intervention for internalising prob

Slow Oscillations Track Acute Stroke Injury but Not Functional Recovery.

A central goal in translational stroke research is to identify neurophysiological biomarkers that index injury severity and provide information about subsequent functional outcome. Cortical slow oscillations (SOs; 0.1-1.0 Hz) are suppressed after ischemic stroke and recover over the following days to weeks. Whether SO recovery actually tracks behavioral recovery, and whether pre-stroke network organization relates to outcome, has not been tested within individual animals. Using longitudinal wide-field calcium imaging in Thy1-GCaMP6f mice (n = 25), we tracked ipsilateral and contralateral SO po
