[Case series of hereditary angioedema patients and use of tranexamic acid treatments in prophylaxis and acute crisis, experience in Perú].

BACKGROUND: Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease characterized by episodes of swelling, HAE crisis could cause death by suffocation, and also affect the quality of life in these patients. There exists an important disparity of HAE specific treatments between countries, inclusive in the same region, currently in Perú we use moderate and high doses of Tranexamic Acid (TA) in prophylaxis therapy and in acute HAE crisis respectively. OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with TA in three types of HAE patients and be a guide to other countries with this therapy, where HAE specific treatment…

Analysis of tranexamic acid usage in adult spinal deformity patients with relative contraindications: does it increase the risk of complications?

OBJECTIVE: Complex spinal deformity surgeries may involve significant blood loss. The use of antifibrinolytic agents such as tranexamic acid (TXA) has been proven to reduce perioperative blood loss. However, for patients with a history of thromboembolic events, there is concern of increased risk when TXA is used during these surgeries. This study aimed to assess whether TXA use in patients undergoing complex spinal deformity correction surgeries increases the risk of thromboembolic complications based on preexisting thromboembolic risk factors. METHODS: Data were analyzed for adult patients w…

Pharmacokinetics of tranexamic acid in patients with ulcerative colitis and in healthy volunteers after the single instillation of 2 g rectally.

Topically applied antifibrinolytic drugs may be of value in the control of bleeding in active ulcerative colitis. Any impairment of systemic fibrinolysis in this condition, however, is potentially harmful. Since pharmacokinetic data after the rectal administration of tranexamic acid are non-existent, plasma concentration and recovery in the urine were recorded after a single dose of 2 g tranexamic acid given rectally to five patients with ulcerative colitis and to five healthy volunteers. The median area under the curve was, for the volunteers, 7.64 mg/L x hr (range: 4.43-11.56) and, for the p…

Incidence of venous thromboembolism with intraoperative tranexamic acid use in breast surgery patients on estrogen-containing medications: a case series.

Consideration of perioperative bleeding and venous thromboembolism (VTE) are important thrombotic complications for surgeons. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent that is often used perioperatively to control bleeding. Product monographs caution its use in patients using estrogen-containing medications due to theoretical increased risk of VTE. However, no studies have explored this relationship in breast surgery. This retrospective case series aimed to determine the incidence of VTE with intraoperative TXA use in breast surgery patients using estrogen-containing medication at our…
