From concept to protocol: iterative approach of a target trial emulation on GnRH analog safety in transgender and gender diverse youth.

CONTEXT: The scarcity of robust long-term safety data has contributed to increasing restrictions on the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) treatment in transgender and gender diverse adolescents (TGDAs) in several countries. Methodological limitations of earlier studies have led to controversy and debate, underscoring the urgent need for high-quality evidence in this field. OBJECTIVE: To present a study design using target trial emulation (TTE) to evaluate long-term safety of GnRHa treatment in TGDAs using observational data from national healthcare registries, and highlight

Blood donor safety and selection criteria for individuals self-identifying as trans or non-binary.

Social movements in favour of greater diversity, equity and inclusion have led societies to re-examine the concepts of sex assigned at birth and gender identity. These have also impacted healthcare systems and blood operators. Gender identities extending beyond the concept of cisgender binary individuals might have an impact on the safety of blood components for recipients, and on the safety of the donation process itself. Furthermore, the procedures put in place by blood operators to welcome donors from sexual and gender diversity might have a major impact on donors' psychological well-being

Risk behaviors and HIV care continuum outcomes among criminal justice-involved HIV-infected transgender women and cisgender men: Data from the Seek, Test, Treat, and Retain Harmonization Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Transgender persons are highly victimized, marginalized, disproportionately experience incarceration, and have alarmingly increased rates of HIV infection compared to cis-gender persons. Few studies have examined the HIV care continuum outcomes among transgender women (TW), particularly TW who are involved with the criminal justice (CJ) system. METHODS: To improve our understanding of HIV care continuum outcomes and risk behaviors among HIV-infected TW who are involved with the CJ system, we analyzed data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse-supported Seek, Test, Treat, Retai…

Unveiling the dynamics: understanding the current scenario and drivers of HIV epidemiology in Pakistan.

Over the past two decades, the global HIV/AIDS pandemic has emerged as one of the most pressing health concerns worldwide. In low-income countries, where resources are scarce, both the prevalence of HIV and the associated mortality rates have been steadily increasing. According to the national AIDS control program, approximately 74,619 individuals in Pakistan are living with HIV/AIDS, with cases distributed across various provinces and autonomous territories. The country's low literacy rate poses a significant barrier to understanding preventive measures, thereby facilitating the uncontrolled

"Society Isn't Designed for Us to Win": Trauma and Sexual Healthcare Experiences Among Transgender Women in the Southeastern United States.

Transgender women (TGW) are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Experienced trauma threatens TGW's commitment to sexual healthcare. Trauma-informed approaches to sexual healthcare can improve engagement. This study aimed to characterize the trauma experienced by TGW in the Southeastern US, especially related to sexual health. TGW completed in-depth individual interviews guided by the Modified Social Ecological Model (MSEM) and Minority Stress framework. Interviews explored the nature of trauma, sexual health, and their intersection in TGW's lives, and a thema

"Will it be enough to be respected?": understanding personal, institutional, and societal harms and benefits of genomics research.

BACKGROUND: Transgender Identity Genomics Research (TIGR)-research examining potential associations between genetic factors and transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (trans) identities-takes place in a complex landscape with significant potential to either benefit or harm trans communities. As public and political scrutiny of trans communities intensifies, the stakes and potential impacts of TIGR are heightened and ethical, legal and social implications must be considered. To better understand how those who would be most affected by TIGR view such research, we explored trans adults' perce

Perceptions of HIV Research Participation Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men who Have Sex with Men and Transgender and Nonbinary Adults: Results From a Midwest Pride Event.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) and transgender and nonbinary (trans/NB) individuals. This study investigated attitudes toward participation in HIV survey research, guided by Emanuel's framework for ethical clinical research (e.g., risk-benefit ratio, fair participant selection, respect for participants, social value, and collaborative partnership). GBM (n = 294) and trans/NB (n = 86) persons recruited at a Pride event in Milwaukee completed a survey assessing risks and benefits of participation

Evaluating the phobias, attitudes, and cultural competence of Master of Social Work students toward the LGBT populations.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests there is bias toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons by social workers; unfortunately, little research has been conducted to examine Master of Social Work (MSW) students' views toward these populations. The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment scale to evaluate the attitudes, phobias, and cultural competence of MSW students toward the LGBT populations. METHODS: An assessment scale was developed and administered to MSW students (n = 173) at a Midwestern American university. RESULTS: The majority of MSW students reported low ph

Transgender-approximate, lesbian-like, and genderqueer: writing about Edward De Lacy Evans.

The article discusses the story of Edward De Lacy Evans, a person who was born female but who lived most of his life as a man, marrying three times. Evans' story is a well known one, but it is reconsidered here alongside recent theoretical interest from lesbian, queer, and transgendered historical perspectives. Although interest in Evans was and is considerable, the article outlines the ways in which Evans' subjectivity remains elusive.

Exploring multiple drug use by integrating mobile health and qualitative mapping methods - An individual case study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple drug use involves particular pleasures and risks, and is disproportionately practiced by some minority and socially marginalized groups. The unique patterns, intentions, and social contexts of multiple drug use for these groups are poorly understood. METHODS: Our mixed method integrates geo-enabled smartphone survey data collection with a qualitative mapping interview method. This brief report presents data from one study participant to demonstrate this method's potential contributions to multiple drug use research for priority groups in different settings. RESULTS: 'Jas

Transgender men: clinical care and implications in reproductive medicine: introduction.

Gender dysphoria, a discrepancy between gender identity and genetically determined sex, is encountered in approximately 0.5% of people uniformly across the world. In the case of transgender men, formerly called female-to-male transsexuals, the available gender-affirming measures, hormone therapy and possible surgical procedures, are multiple and discussed in detail in this series of articles.
