Intramedullary spinal tuberculoma presenting as a conus tumor: a case report and review of the literature.

Intramedullary spinal tuberculoma is a rare form of central nervous system tuberculosis. Although tuberculosis is unusual in the west, it is still prevalent in Asia and Africa. We report a case in which the diagnosis was made histologically without evidence of symptoms of systemic tuberculosis. The lesion, located in the conus medullaris, mimicked a conus tumor. The patient was a 20-year-old man who presented with a history of progressive leg weakness, urinary urgency, and impotence. There was no history of, or recent contact with, tuberculosis. A diagnosis of an intramedullary tumor in the co

Posterior-Only Approach for the Correction of Severe Post-tubercular Kyphosis.

Tuberculosis of the vertebral column (Pott's disease) accounts for up to one-half of musculoskeletal tuberculous infections. The eradication of the infective organism (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) is achievable with chemotherapy. However, such patients with spinal tuberculosis are at risk of developing spinal deformity, and 3%-5% of the patients develop severe deformity greater than 60°. A 30-year-old female presented with back pain of 11 years, discharging sinus, and progressively worsening kyphotic deformity of eight-year duration. She had completed a full course of anti-tubercular chemothera

Large multicystic spinal lesion in a young African migrant: a problem of differential diagnosis.

We describe a rare case of large, fully cystic spinal schwannoma in a young adult from The Gambia. The initial clinical suspicion was spinal cystic echinococcosis. He came to our attention reporting progressive walking impairment and neurological symptoms in the lower limbs. An expansive lesion extending from L2 to S1 was shown by imaging (ie, CT scan and MRI). Differential diagnoses included aneurysmal bone cyst and spinal tuberculosis and abscess; the initial suggested diagnosis of spinal cystic echinococcosis was discarded based on contrast enhancement results. The final diagnosis of cystic
