OBJECTIVES: We performed a retrospective analysis to contribute to the increasing number of reports on sialendoscopy in the literature and give basic concepts for beginners at the same time.
METHODS: Between 2004 and 2009, 83 patients with symptoms of ductal obstruction of the major salivary glands were admitted to our clinic. Diagnostic and/or interventional sialendoscopy was applied to 60 glands (33 submandibular and 27 parotid) of 54 patients. A holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser or a pneumatic lithotripter was used for intraductal stone fragmentation.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigate the prevalence of chronic otitis media (COM) in young men.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty thousand consecutive young men (mean age 22 years) who were under election for high performance military positions were examined by two otolaryngologists in the Military Hospital, İzmir. The otologic examination findings were noted. We evaluated the patients who have tympanic membrane perforation, retraction, adhesion, myringosclerosis and the patients who had underwent surgery before.

An outbreak of trichinellosis occurred in Izmir, Turkey, between January and March 2004. The outbreak was caused by the consumption of raw meat balls made of beef deceptively mixed with pork infected with Trichinella britovi. Tularemia caused by Francisella tularensis, which is considered a biological warfare agent, is a widely distributed zoonosis. In this study, we aimed to compare a 2005 outbreak of tularemia that was confirmed as waterborne by PCR to outbreak of tularemia that was reported as waterborne in 2000 and to investigate the changes of epidemiological characteristics between these two outbreaks occurring in the same region. From 2002 to 2003, a total of 381 consecutive S. pyogenes isolates were obtained from throat swabs (n = 337) and samples of pus (n = 31), sputum (n=10) and blood (n = 3) at Hacettepe University Hospital.
