Impact of COVID-19 online classes on morningness-eveningness personality among adult college students: A survey study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 emerged as a serious pandemic in 2019 and billions of people were infected. Various precautionary methods were taken to contain the spread of virus such as social distancing, public lockdown, sanitation, and closure of schools and colleges. Many colleges started online classes to resume their syllabus and to complete the course curriculum. These evening online sessions resulted in late night sleep, long term mobile/computer exposure, and disturbed sleep pattern. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 online classes on morningness- eveningne

Personality traits and diabetes incidence among postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether personality traits, including optimism, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, negative emotional expressiveness, and hostility, were associated with risk of developing type 2 diabetes (hereafter diabetes) among postmenopausal women. METHODS: A total of 139,924 postmenopausal women without diabetes at baseline (between 1993 and 1998) aged 50 to 79 years from the Women's Health Initiative were prospectively followed for a mean of 14 (range 0.1-23) years. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess associations between personal

[Psychopathological study on Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome].

Ten cases of Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome (GTS) are reported. Average age of onset of the syndrome was 6.3 years old. Many of them were eldest children. 40% of them were caused by hereditary factor, and 40% of them had some abnormalities at their birth, for verbal tics including coprolalia. The GTS were classified into two types, Type I and Type II, from psychopathological point of view. Type I is "sadistic self-conversion type" and Type II is "masochistic personality type." Type I have an experience of attacks from others first, and, then, the desire of sadism aroused by the others conver

Negative Affectivity Predicts Lower Quality of Life and Metabolic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Patients: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

Introduction: It is essential to consider the clinical assessment of psychological aspects in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM), in order to prevent potentially adverse self-management care behaviors leading to diabetes-related complications, including declining levels of Quality of Life (QoL) and negative metabolic control. Purpose: In the framework of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the specific aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of distressed personality factors as Negative Affectivity (NA) and Social Inhibition (SI) on diabetes-related clinical variables (i.e., QoL and g

Pain in cervical dystonia: mechanisms, assessment and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with cervical dystonia (CD), pain is a major contributor to disability and social isolation and is often the main reason patients seek treatment. Surveys evaluating patient perceptions of their CD symptoms consistently highlight pain as a troublesome and disabling feature of their condition with significant impact on daily life and work. AREAS COVERED: In this article, the authors review the epidemiology, assessment, possible mechanisms and treatment of pain in CD, including a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trial data with abobotulinumtoxinA. EXPERT OPINION:

Risk Factors for Neuropathic Pain in Digital Amputations.

Background/Objectives: Finger amputation is frequently followed by complications, with reported revision rates of up to 20%. One of the most disabling sequelae is the formation of painful neuromas, occurring in approximately 3-9% of cases. Several biological and mechanical risk factors have been proposed, but the potential influence of psychological traits remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether a correlation exists between patients' personality traits and the development of neuropathic pain or related symptoms. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at a Level

The relationship between temperament, diabetes and depression.

BACKGROUND: Temperament is the stable core of personality and it may represent the underlying continuity between how the person typically is (trait) and how the person temporarily changes (state). Comorbid depression in patients with Type 2 diabetes is important because of the negative consequences on the prognosis of diabetes. Little research has explored the relationships between temperament, depression and type 2 diabetes. The aims of the present paper are first to describe current research that has examined the relationship between temperament, diabetes and depression, and second to make r

Biobehavioral research on coronary heart disease: where is the person?

This study examined the thesis that patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) comprise discrete personality subtypes and that identification of these subtypes may benefit biobehavioral research on CHD. Measures of Negative Affectivity, Social Inhibition, and Self-Deception were used to generate a personality taxonomy through cluster analysis in a sample of 405 men with CHD. This empirical taxonomy served as a basis for the development of a conceptual model which delineates hardy, distressed, inhibited, and repressive subtypes. Coronary proneness may differ across these subtypes to the extent

Theory of Mind and Information Processing Speed in Multiple Sclerosis: Associations With Personality Traits.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment, particularly decreased information processing speed (IPS), is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). Social cognition (SC) is also affected, but it is less studied, and the influence of personality traits on theory of mind (ToM), a key component of SC, and IPS remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined how IPS and ToM are associated with personality traits, demographic factors, and clinical factors in people with MS (PwMS). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 PwMS attending a tertiary MS clinic in Isfahan, Iran. Demographic (age, sex,

Association of Childhood Trauma and Personality Dimensions with the Duration of Untreated Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Understanding causes and consequences of untreated psychosis is important since the duration of psychosis prior to the treatment initiation is a potentially modifiable prognostic factor, and comprehending its impact on outcome may enhance therapeutic strategies. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on a consecutive sample of 105 participants, 47 first episode participants and 58 with multiple episodes. Primary outcome was the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). We observed three independent variables: childhood trauma measured by Childhood Trauma Quest

Emotion profile and behaviour pattern of patients with active duodenal ulcer compared with acute coronary patients.

The authors examined personality profiles and type A/B behaviour in 100 patients with active duodenal ulcer, and a mean age of 39 years, using the Bortner scale and the Plutchnik Emotional Profile Index (EPI). The authors compared them with acute coronary patients and healthy controls. The mean EPI percentages for the duodenal ulcer patients, compared with acute coronary patients and healthy controls, display the trustful dimension (84.1 +/- 27.4--69.1 +/- 20.4--69.3 +/- 20.0), the aggressive dimension (56.7 +/- 9.3--41.3 +/- 19.2--37.6 +/- 17.3), the depressed dimension (84.5 +/- 12.3--52.8 +

Thalasselis' syndrome and other theories on keratoconus.

The etiology of keratoconus is still unclear. This study presents a new clinical sign, Thalasselis' syndrome, defined as: an association between keratoconus, magnesium deficiency, type-A behavior and allergy. Also, it introduces the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency could affect pathologically the osmotic mechanism of the cornea, specifically the Na-K and/or Ca-ATPase pumps; the collagen structure by alteration of the adenylate cyclase activity; and other mechanisms as well. Furthermore, we propose the Thalasselis' syndrome is compatible with previous theories on keratoconus. In addition to

Drug use disorders in Japanese eating disorder patients.

A previous questionnaire study suggested that drug use disorder (DUD: abuse/dependence on drugs, other than alcohol) in Japanese eating disorder (ED) patients was less prevalent than in Western countries, although eating and drug use disorders have spread simultaneously in Western countries. However, the precise prevalence and comorbidity features remain unknown. Subjects consisted of 62 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type; 48 patients with anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type; and 75 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type. The Japanese version of the Structured Clinical
