Ultrasound has been used in the diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis since the first reports of its use with contact B mode scanners. Real-time imaging has allowed measurements of pyloric diameter, length, and muscle wall thickness. Wall thickness measurements taken with the pylorus in longitudinal (elongated) view improve diagnostic accuracy. Sixty-three carotid endarterectomies in 60 patients were followed by clinical and duplex scanning at 2 weeks postoperatively and at 3-monthly intervals for 3 years (mean 18 months). Four patients died (two of stroke, two of myocardial infarction) and four survivors had recurrent ipsilateral symptoms. Two had an immediate mild hemiparesis which recovered completely within 36 h; in both, the endarterectomized arteries were patent on scanning. 624 women were referred to an emergency gynaecological ultrasound clinic with a provisional diagnosis of threatened miscarriage based on a history of amenorrhoea and vaginal bleeding with or without abdominal pain. High-resolution abdominal sector scanning was used to assess fetal size and viability, as well as uterine and placental size, to identify features which might indicate imminent fetal death. In this study the parameters of normal ovarian cycles were prospectively applied in a programme of ovulation induction with human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG).
