The role of real-time ultrasonography was evaluated in 50 randomly selected cases with a strong clinical suspicion of gallbladder diseases and normal oral cholecystogram. Of these, 13(26%) cases showed abnormalities on ultrasonography.

We used ultrasonography to examine 36 children suffering from transient synovitis and 12 children with early Perthes' disease. Widening of the joint space was revealed by ultrasonography in all affected hips with either disease. We studied and quantified the healing process of gastric ulcers in humans by means of endoscopic ultrasonography. Initially, using the water bath method, we scanned specimens of resected human stomachs with gastric ulcers including 9 open ulcers and 14 ulcer scars. By the recent advance in ultrasonography, an increasing number of patients with prenatally detected urological anomalies have been reported. Endosonography of the colon has until recently been limited to examination of the rectum. Rigid and flexible instruments are currently available which allow for detailed images of the rectal wall. Comparative studies suggest that endosonography may be more accurate than computed tomography in the preoperative staging of rectal carcinoma. Recently, an ultrasound colonoscope has been developed which allows for visual examination, biopsy, and endosonography throughout the colon. Surgical cholecystostomy is a palliative treatment for cholecystitis and distal biliary obstructions when the general condition of the patient does not allow complex techniques. Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) guided by ultrasonography is an alternative to that procedure as well as a method of direct access to the biliary tract for diagnostic examinations (bacteriologic study of bile and percutaneous cholangiography). A new technique for ultrasonic examination of the hip is aimed at identification of the acetabular cartilaginous ridge, called the "neolimbus" by Ortolani. The presence of this ridge is pathognomonic for congenital hip dysplasia in the newborn. Ultrasonography of 300 normal hips never showed the neolimbus, but it was present in 25 dysplastic hips. Ultrasound examination of the hips of newborn infants can therefore be combined with the Ortolani test in the very early diagnosis of hip dysplasia.
