We herein report the first application of the specific red cell adherence test in patients with benign and malignant lesions of the urethra. In an attempt to determine whether the specific red cell adherence test could have potential use in predicting malignant behavior of urethral carcinoma we applied this test on specimens from 17 patients with a urethral caruncle, 3 with chronic urethritis and 4 with primary urethral carcinoma. Staphylococcus aureus and Mycoplasma spp were the most frequently isolated aerobic microorganisms in specimens obtained from the prepuce and the urethra of 20 normal, adult male dogs. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus canis were the most frequently isolated bacteria in specimens collected from the vagina (in the area of the urethral orifice) of 20 normal intact bitches and 20 spayed bitches. A significant difference was not found in the observed frequency of occurrence of any of the microorganisms isolated from the intact vs the spayed bitches.

Corpus cavernosum abscesses are rarely seen in the clinical setting. We report the case of an early diagnosis of corpus cavernosum abscess due to a blind-ending urethra in a 60-year-old man without known risk factors and who was successfully treated by antibiotic therapy alone. In 2000, chlamydial strains OK133 and OK135 were isolated from 2 female patients with cervicitis. These strains were unresponsive to commercially available PCR and LCR test kits for the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, and their phenotypic characteristics were very similar. The OK135 nucleotide sequence in MOMP-VD2 gene closely resembled that of Chlamydophila caviae GPIC. A 30-year-old man presented with short penile corporeal bodies hosting a 3-cm fibular graft, absence of glans, and proximal penile hypospadias. The patient underwent a forearm flap transfer with an "umbrella-like" skin flap for glans and urethra reconstruction and a radial bone strut to allow for rigidity. A new procedure with the use of a free skin patch graft for the surgical treatment of strictures located in the mid anterior urethra is described. To avoid the formation of a urethral diverticulum, the skin graft is sutured dorsally rather than ventrally and subsequently is fixed on the tunica albuginea of the corpora, which support the patch. We describe 4 different procedures according to the extent of the stenosis and the degree of involvement of the spongiosum tissue by the inflammatory process. The preliminary results obtained in a small series of 6 patients are presented.
