Healthcare workers' knowledge and acceptance of the malaria vaccine in the Nanoro Health District of Burkina Faso: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In February 2024, Burkina Faso introduced the malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS01 into its Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI). For vaccination to be successful, an important criterion is its acceptance by the population. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are among the primary sources of information for caregivers when deciding whether to vaccinate their children or not. This study aimed to assess HCWs' knowledge and acceptance of the new malaria vaccine (MV) in the Nanoro Health District and to identify factors associated with MV acceptance within this group. METHODS: We conducted a cross-se

The effect of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use on vaccine acceptance, uptake, and adherence: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy is increasingly recognized as a health challenge affecting populations worldwide. Given the biological vulnerabilities and structural barriers people who use substances and/or have behavioral addictions face, this systematic review aims to evaluate whether this subpopulation is less prone to adhere to vaccination recommendations. METHODS: Electronic searches of published original research were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and PsycINFO from database inception to December 2022. Our strategy encompassed retrievals regardless of languages and date of publicat

What made people (more) positive toward the COVID-19 vaccine? Exploring positive and negative deviance perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Despite the associations of certain beliefs and worldviews (e.g., religiosity and belief in conspiracy theories) with non-vaccination behavior, some individuals who hold these views still choose vaccination, and vice versa. This study aims to explore why individuals choose to be vaccinated against COVID-19, despite holding opposing beliefs and worldviews, or refrain from doing so, when their beliefs align with vaccination. By examining both positive and negative deviant behavior, we seek to identify strategies and barriers for public health officials to develop interventions to imp

Media portrayal of vaccine: a content analysis of Vietnam online news about a pentavalent vaccine in the Expanded Program of Immunization.

Background: Vaccine hesitancy has become a prominent public health concern, particularly within the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic context. Worries about vaccine side effects are often cited as a reason for hesitancy, while media reporting about this topic plays an important role in influencing the public's perspectives about vaccines and vaccination. In Vietnam, during 2012-2013, there were several adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) of Quinvaxem- a pentavalent vaccine in the Expanded Immunization Program, which made big headlines in the media. Such incidences have con

Highlighting Heroes and Ignoring Villains: Visual Framing of Polio and Polio Vaccine in Newspapers.

Polio vaccine hesitancy remains high in Pakistan due to various socio-political, religious, and economic factors. To address this, the government of Pakistan and its international partners such as UNICEF have devised a multipronged communication strategy to counter resistance to polio vaccine in hard-to-reach areas of the country. In this strategy, mainstream news media has been identified as a key stakeholder, as they have the potential to reach a wide range of population and disseminate easy to understand messages including both visuals and text. However, less scholarly attention has been pa

Post-acute non-specific symptoms following COVID-19 vaccination: a Danish population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Post-acute non-specific symptoms such as headaches, muscular pain, and fatigue are frequently reported following COVID-19 vaccination, raising concerns about adverse events. As vaccine-hesitant individuals may be more likely to experience symptoms of vaccines, this study investigates whether COVID-19 vaccination increases the odds of post-acute non-specific symptoms, stratified by COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: This longitudinal study uses repeated measurements from the BiCoVac cohort-a random sample of 913 116 Danish citizens aged 16-65 years. Data were collected through na

Side effects following COVID-19 vaccination in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease.

Vulnerable patient populations have seen decreased rates of vaccination against SARS-CoV2-19 (COVID-19) due to hesitancies and distrust, magnified by a paucity of data for certain populations. The rate of COVID-19 vaccination in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) remains low despite the risk for severe complications, resulting in continued infections and hospitalizations from COVID-19. We sought to describe vaccine reactions, including vaso-occlusive crises, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations, in children with SCD. Our findings will start to provide the necessary vaccine si

Availability of and Obstacles to Providing COVID-19 Vaccinations at Syringe Services Programs in the United States, 2021.

Many syringe services programs (SSPs) have established trusting, long-term relationships with their clients and are well situated to provide COVID-19 vaccinations. We examined characteristics and practices of SSPs in the United States that reported providing COVID-19 vaccinations to their clients and obstacles to vaccinating people who inject drugs (PWID). We surveyed SSPs in September 2021 to examine COVID-19 vaccination practices through a supplement to the 2020 Dave Purchase Memorial survey. Of 153 SSPs surveyed, 73 (47.7%) responded to the supplement; 24 of 73 (32.9%) reported providing on

Vaccine-Associated Neurological Adverse Events: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Vaccination is an effective strategy to reduce the burden of preventable illness. However, many clinical reports revealed that various vaccinations may associate with neurological disorders, mainly including autoimmune disease, febrile seizure, and vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). Although more and more reports revealed that part of the above post-vaccine neurological disorders is not directly related to vaccination, it may be merely a coincidence. However, these reports may increase the hesitancy on vaccination for the public population and influence the coverage of vaccinat

Vaccinations in pregnancy.

Adult immunization rates have fallen short of national goals partly because of misconceptions about the safety and benefits of current vaccines. The danger of these misconceptions is magnified during pregnancy, when concerned physicians are hesitant to administer vaccines and patients are reluctant to accept them. Routine vaccines that generally are safe to administer during pregnancy include diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, and hepatitis B. Other vaccines, such as meningococcal and rabies, may be considered. Vaccines that are contraindicated, because of the theoretic risk of fetal transmission

Popular Attitudes Toward Vaccination During the Initial COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout (December 2020-May 2021): A Social Media Analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered global vaccination campaigns while simultaneously fueling misinformation and vaccine hesitancy. This study analyzed 77,171 English-language tweets related to vaccination collected between December 2020 and May 2021 to examine how attitudes toward vaccination evolved during this critical period. Using a mixed-methods approach combining sentiment analysis, thematic classification, and demographic analysis, the study identified trends that may influence vaccination acceptance beyond COVID-19. Results showed a decline in positive sentiment (18.3% to 10.9%) and an in
