A feminist phenomenological approach to the analysis of body maps: Childhood trauma and anorexia nervosa.

Body mapping is an arts-based research technique that uses a life-sized outline of the participant's body and symbols that visually represent their lived experiences. In this article, we describe the methods of body mapping and analytic techniques used in a research inquiry exploring how child abuse influenced the embodied processes in anorexia. We aim to contribute to methodological research practice in anorexia using a method that can potentially add value in other areas of ED research or be adapted for treatment settings. Our research findings suggest that body mapping can add value to the

On the fatigue life of dental implants: Numerical and experimental investigation on configuration effect.

Dental implants have seen widespread and successful use in recent years. Given their long-term application and the critical role of geometry in determining fracture and fatigue characteristics, fatigue assessments are of utmost importance for implant systems. In this study, nine dental implant system samples were subjected to testing in accordance with ISO 14801 standards. The tests included static evaluations to assess ultimate loads and fatigue tests conducted under loads of 270 N and 230 N at a frequency of 15 Hz, aimed at identifying fatigue failure locations and fatigue life. Fatigue life

Pediatric aspects of lipid-induced atherogenesis.

There is a need to protect our young from an atherogenic way of life. Atherosclerosis and its precursors have their onset in childhood. Correctable risk factors have been identified that have been shown to exert greater impact early in life than later. Optimal levels of these risk factors for children are being established. The rise in serum lipids, blood pressure, body fat, and blood sugar observed in transition from childhood to adult life is neither inevitable nor desirable. Cardiovascular disease in adults may well begin in childhood with medical trivia such as a tendency to obesity, moder

Generational effect on nurses' work values, engagement, and satisfaction in an acute hospital.

BACKGROUND: The present nursing workforce comprises four generational of nurses working side-by-side. While such a generation blend adds invaluable diversity to the workforce, it also brings added complexity. The study aimed to describe and summarise work values and attitudes of four nursing generations, namely Baby boomers, Generation X, Y and Z. METHOD: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was adopted. A total of 778 nurses from an acute hospital in Singapore completed the online questionnaire. The Work Value and Attitude scale measuring seven constructs (Work Centrality, Non-compliance, T

Determining the Level to Affect of Physical Findings and Outcome Measures on Functional Status in Partial-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears Using a Multiple Linear Regression Model.

Background and Objectives: It is crucial to determine physical findings and outcome measures that affect functional status of the patients, and the impact levels of these parameters on patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the determinant and predictive effect of pain levels, shoulder range of motion (ROM) values, disability and health-related quality of life factors on functional status in individuals with partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PRCT). Materials and Methods: Firstly, the functional status of 45 patients (mean age: 50.78 ± 5.28 years; 29 female) with PRCT

Risk factors for development of diabetes mellitus in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether diabetes recurs in their later life when women have a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or abnormal glucose tolerance test (impaired glucose tolerance, IGT). METHODS: Three groups of women were investigated at 5-10 years postpartum. GDM group (n = 45) had been diagnosed as having GDM in their previous pregnancy. IGT group (n = 31) had a history of abnormal glucose tolerance test during previous pregnancy. Normal control group (n = 39) was normal previous pregnant population. Their previous obstetric and medical histories were thoroughly reviewed. F

Extraintestinal Manifestations Have a Negative Impact on Quality of Life of Patients Living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) can produce extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) in up to 50% of patients with IBD and may have worse quality of life than the general population. In general, IBD patients with activity have worse quality of life than those who are in remission. No previous studies have explored whether EIMs can affect the quality of life in patients with IBD. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the presence of EIM causes a worse quality of life in patients with IBD. METHODS: A case-control study that included 243 patients diagnosed with IBD (132 with

Role of genetic variability in neonatal jaundice. A prospective study on full-term, blood group-compatible infants.

A series of genetic, developmental and environmental variables have been analyzed in a prospective sample of full-term newborn babies, compatible with their mothers in the major blood group systems, in order to attempt an evaluation of the effect of these variables on serum bilirubin level during the first few days of life. Three genetic factors (PGM1, ACP1 and ADA) and three non-genetic variables (rise of bilirubin level during the first day of life, a mother with a history of previous abortion, and use of alcoholic beverages by the mother) have a significant predictive value for the separati

Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A in the prediction of early pregnancy failure.

Maternal circulating pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) was measured in 51 patients with vaginal bleeding in the first half of pregnancy. Concentrations of PAPP-A were consistently lower in pregnancies which failed. In the prediction of early pregnancy failure, the predictive value of depressed maternal PAPP-A levels was 58%, the sensitivity was 91.9%, and specificity was 95.1%. These results compared favorably with other biochemical tests of placental function. However, if fetal life was demonstrated ultrasonically, depressed levels of PAPP-A substantially differentiated between t

Viral chemotherapy.

New antiviral compounds are being tested constantly and may be of considerable value with increasing availability. More than 200 analogues of purines and pyrimidines have been found to inhibit DNA and RNA viruses. Adenine arabinoside is most effective against disseminated herpes simplex virus and disseminated herpes zoster. Idoxuridine is useful in treatment of herpetic keratitis. Interferon still is in the experimental stage, and, because of its short half-life and high cost, it probably will not be released in the near future. Amantadine appears to be useful in prevention of A2 influenza, bu

Quality of life in patients with hepatitis C. Importance of treatment.

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is a systemic disease that impairs the quality of life of affected individuals. The impairment is not only due to physiological factors, such as the non-hepatic manifestations of the disease or certain symptoms such as fatigue, weakness and nausea, but is also due to the substantial psychological impact of the infection. Treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAA) has been demonstrated to substantially improve patient's quality of life, starting in the initial phases. [Long-term results after cardiac valve replacement (author's transl)].

The value of prosthetic valve replacement is determined not only by the improvement in life expectancy but also by the quality of life. This statement resulted from an analysis of 168 patients undergoing isolated aortic -- or mitral -- valve replacement between 1970 and 1976. Besides numerous complications -- probably often avoidable such as side effects of incorrect anticoagulation -- long term results of 125 surviving patients were satisfactory over a period of 3-9 years after surgery. Though complete restitution was rare, subjective and objective improvement -- different and dependent on ty

Perinatal Palliative Care: ACOG COMMITTEE OPINION, Number 786.

Perinatal palliative care refers to a coordinated care strategy that comprises options for obstetric and newborn care that include a focus on maximizing quality of life and comfort for newborns with a variety of conditions considered to be life-limiting in early infancy. With a dual focus on ameliorating suffering and honoring patient values, perinatal palliative care can be provided concurrently with life-prolonging treatment. The focus of this document, however, involves the provision of exclusively palliative care without intent to prolong life in the context of a life-limiting condition, o

[Is there a relation between an increase in IgM in the newborn infant and the course of pregnancy and labor?].

In order to check the significance of the serum IgM concentration in newborns the IgM levels in the placental blood of 263 randomly selected neonates were determined; in 105 of these children the IgM concentration was again determined on the 6th day of life. The maternal IgM concentrations were also determined for the purpose of comparison. All of the newborns were allocated to infection risk categories on the basis of history and clinical data. The findings were evaluated on the basis of the mean values with simple standard deviation, single-case analysis and arrangement of the medium values

Measurement of platelet life-span in normal subjects and patients with myeloproliferative disease with indium oxine labelled platelets.

The use of 111Indium oxine as a platelet label for the performance of platelet life-span studies has been examined. Platelet life-span in normal subjects varied between 8 X 10 and 10 X 36 d. Patients with primary thrombocythaemia had clearly reduced platelet life-span whether or not they presented with vascular occlusion and this abnormality persisted after reduction of the platelet count to normal by busulphan therapy. Patients with similarly elevate platelet counts due to chronic granulocytic leukaemia or after splenectomy had platelet life-span values in the normal range. Plasma beta-TG lev

Role of Otolaryngology in Monitoring the Progression of Myotonic Dystrophy: A Case Report.

Myotonic dystrophy is a systemic condition with the involvement of the neuromuscular, cardiac, and gastrointestinal systems. Otolaryngology has an underrecognized yet critical role in the longitudinal management of myotonic dystrophy, given the impact on swallowing, voice, and airway management. This case is of a 42-year-old male with genetically confirmed myotonic dystrophy type one. The patient presented with complaints of dysphagia, voice changes, and hand weakness. Though this patient's workup primarily focused on internal medicine and gastroenterology, these quality-of-life complaints hig

Substance use and psychiatric comorbidities among medical inpatients: associations with length of stay, health-related quality of life, and functioning, with consideration for gender.

Little is known about the impact of substance use and psychiatric comorbidities on the management and outcomes of medical inpatients. This study explores the influence of psychiatric comorbidities, and substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis) on the length of hospital stay (LOS), Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), and functioning in 800 medical inpatients at a high-complexity academic hospital. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that psychiatric comorbidities were associated with reduced HRQoL (β = -0.050, p-value = 0.017), and impaired functioning (β = 3.4, p-value <0.001). High-ri
