Therapeutic role of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and aspirin in unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), the loss of two or more clinically confirmed pregnancies, is observed in approximately 1%-5% of couples trying to conceive. Immune dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor. This study evaluated pregnancy outcomes among women with unexplained RPL treated with combined recombinant human granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) and low-dose aspirin, while acknowledging that the evidence base for rhG-CSF in unexplained RPL remains uncertain. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 300 women aged 18-45 years with at least two

Multiple Sebaceous Horn on the Penis-an Interesting Case Report.

PURPOSE: Sex differences in cellular biology significantly influence cell responses in culture. Yet, the sex-specific effects of culture reagents such as fetal bovine serum (FBS) remain understudied. Increased adoption of cell-based models such as microphysiological systems (MPS) as replacements for animal models demands a greater understanding sex-specific responses to common media formulations. This study examined the effects of FBS and hormone-free charcoal-stripped serum (CSS) on male (XY) and female (XX) cells in 2D and 3D MPS culture models to demonstrate profound sex-specificity in bioa

TORCH Antibodies Among Pregnant Women and Their Newborns Receiving Care at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Moshi, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis, other (syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19, and hepatitis B), rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) - known by the acronym TORCH - is a group of infections affecting both mothers and their unborn babies with adverse short- and long-term outcomes. The majority of infected mothers are asymptomatic, which leaves only speculation as to the probable cause of many congenital anomalies, stillbirths, prematurity, and death resulting from TORCH infections. The main objective of this study was to investigate previou

Mammalian reproductive and developmental toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics: a critical appraisal of evidence using the SciRAP tool.

Human exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) is increasingly documented, yet their potential effects on reproductive and developmental health remain inadequately explored. Preliminary findings presented in scientific literature suggest that MNPs may translocate systemically and localize in reproductive tissues, prompting growing concern among both researchers and regulators. However, existing toxicological studies differ in terms of methodological adequacy and regulatory applicability. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic evaluation of current scientific evidence regarding the

Hematological Profile in Sickle Cell Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Comparing Steady-State and Vaso-Occlusive Crisis Phases (2000-2025).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by intrinsic clinical manifestations, frequently exacerbated by vaso-occlusive episodes (VOEs), which significantly affect hematological parameters. This systematic review and meta-analysis is aimed at synthesizing evidence from studies published over the past 25 years on complete blood count profiles in SCD patients, both in the steady state and during VOEs. The objective was to clarify hypotheses and highlight the need for prospective studies to establish specific reference values for steady-state SCD patients

Clinical and Laboratory Correlates of Cerebral Blood Flow Velocities and Risks for Stroke Among Steady-State Sickle Cell Anemia Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound (US) is commonly used to assess cerebral blood flow velocity and identify abnormal flow patterns. Additionally, clinical and laboratory parameters could be useful for the early detection of sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients who are prone to developing stroke, especially in low-income settings. Objectives This study aims to correlate clinical and laboratory parameters with the risk of stroke according to TCD values in children with steady-state sickle cell anemia. Methods This study used a cross-sectional observational design, with study particip

A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing Placental Characteristics in Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension and Sickle Cell Anaemia.

BACKGROUND: Placental health plays a critical role in pregnancy outcomes as it serves as the interface between the mother and fetus. High-risk pregnancies, such as those complicated by pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and sickle cell anaemia (SCA), are associated with significant alterations in placental morphology and histopathology, potentially leading to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. While previous studies have explored placental changes associated with either PIH or SCA, nobody has comparatively analysed these conditions to understand their unique and overlapping effects on plac

Prevalence of undernutrition and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care service in public hospitals in Mogadishu, Somalia.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal undernutrition remains a major public health concern globally, particularly in Somalia, where conflict, poverty, and food insecurity exacerbate nutritional deficiencies. Undernutrition during pregnancy poses serious risks to both maternal and fetal health, including increased maternal mortality, low birth weight, and adverse developmental outcomes. Despite its critical implications, there is limited evidence on the burden and associated factors of maternal undernutrition in Somalia. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of undernutrition among pregnan

Impact of Gestational Diabetes on Neonatal Birth Weight and Maternal Postpartum Metabolic Changes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a growing public health concern globally, particularly in the context of rising maternal obesity and glucose intolerance. GDM poses significant risks to both neonatal and maternal health, including fetal overgrowth, birth complications, and long-term metabolic disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of GDM on neonatal birth weight and maternal postpartum metabolic changes. The primary objective was to assess the incidence of macrosomia and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births in pregnancies complicated by GDM. Secondary objectives

D-Dimer: An Early Marker of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Preeclampsia and Eclampsia.

Introduction Preeclampsia, a disease of unknown etiology, affects multiple organ systems and carries a grave prognosis for both the mother and fetus. Any hypertension and proteinuria developing after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normal patient warrants investigation for this disease. Coagulation studies may be deranged in preeclampsia and eclampsia due to their association with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In DIC, the underlying basic pathology is endothelial dysfunction and intense vasospasm; it can affect any organ but most commonly affects the brain, kidneys, uteru

Families Moving Forward Connect mHealth Intervention for Caregivers of Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affect 1.1% to 5% of the general population. Yet, most children with FASD and their families cannot access evidence-based interventions. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have the potential to increase access to care on a broad scale. While numerous self-directed parenting apps exist, none have been tested for FASD. The FMF (Families Moving Forward) Connect app is a self-directed intervention derived from an empirically supported intervention for caregivers raising children with FASD. FMF Connect is the first self-directed parenting app f

Multiple micronutrient supplementation for maternal anemia prevention (MMS-MAP): an individually randomized trial of higher-dose iron (60 mg, 45 mg) compared to low-dose iron (30 mg) in multiple micronutrient supplements in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been shown to be more effective than iron-folic acid (IFA) alone in reducing adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. However, there is a concern that MMS containing 30 mg of iron may be less effective in reducing maternal anemia compared to IFA supplements containing 60 mg of iron. This poses a clinical and programmatic dilemma for countries with a high burden of maternal anemia (> 40% prevalence) where the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using IFA with 60 mg of iron. METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct an individuall

Impact of Genetic Variations on Thromboembolic Risk in Saudis with Sickle Cell Disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a Mendelian disease characterized by multigenic phenotypes. Previous reports indicated a higher rate of thromboembolic events (TEEs) in SCD patients. A number of candidate polymorphisms in certain genes (e.g., FVL, PRT, and MTHFR) were previously reported as risk factors for TEEs in different clinical conditions. This study aimed to genotype these genes and other loci predicted to underlie TEEs in SCD patients. METHODOLOGY: A multi-center genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving Saudi SCD adult patients with a history of TEEs (n = 65) and control

[Selenium and glutathion peroxidase enzyme levels in diabetic patients with early spontaneous abortions].

UNLABELLED: The incidence of spontaneous abortions in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus varies between 10-30%. The etiology of this is still unclear despite numerous experimental studies. Pregnancy is a condition of increased oxidative stress due to impaired balance between pro- and antioxidants. Glutathion and related enzymes perform the best antioxidant protection. Some authors point to a possible correlation between spontaneous abortions and low plasma Se levels as well as low intracellular activity of glutathion peroxidase enzyme. Others report that Hb A1-c, values over 1SD above normal

Mid-pregnancy uterine artery Dopplers and child neurodevelopment.

OBJECTIVE: Resistance to blood flow in the maternal uterine artery (UtA) has been associated with both preeclampsia (PE) and small-for-gestational age (SGA). Our objective was to assess the association of increased maternal UtA resistance with child neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes in low-risk pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: Serial ultrasound exams were prospectively performed in 2334 racial and ethnically diverse, healthy patients with low-risk singleton pregnancies (July 2009 to Jan 2013) as part of the NICHD-Fetal Growth Studies. Maternal UtA Dopplers were performed between 18w0d and

Antenatal corticosteroids for accelerating fetal lung maturation for women at risk of preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory morbidity including respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a serious complication of preterm birth and the primary cause of early neonatal mortality and disability. Despite early evidence indicating a beneficial effect of antenatal corticosteroids on fetal lung maturation and widespread recommendations to use this treatment in women at risk of preterm delivery, some uncertainty remains about their effectiveness particularly with regard to their use in lower-resource settings, different gestational ages and high-risk obstetric groups such as women with hypertension or mu
