BACKGROUND: Fabry Disease (FD) is an X-linked hereditary lysosomal storage disorder which leads to a multisystemic intralysosomal accumulation of globotriaosylceramid (Gb3). Besides prominent renal and cardiac organ involvement, patients commonly complain about vestibulocochlear symptoms like high-frequency hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo. However, comprehensive data especially on vertigo remain scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of vertigo and hearing loss in patients with FD, depending on renal and cardiac parameters and get hints about the sit…

The prevalence of autoimmune diseases has been increasing over the last 20 years. The clinical presentation of this large and heterogeneous group of disorders depends on whether the involvement is organ-specific or non-organ-specific. Dizziness, vertigo, and disequilibrium are common symptoms reported by patients with vestibulocochlear involvement. The association of vertigo and autoimmune diseases has been largely documented, suggesting that autoimmune disorders could be overrepresented in patients with vertigo in comparison to the general population. The aim of this review is to present the …

CONCLUSION: Our present findings demonstrate that resealing to cover the electrode is an effective method to treat vertigo after CI. An insufficient cochleostomy sealing can be regarded as a cause of postoperatively newly occuring vertigo after CI. A transtympanic revision is a promising treatment option in cases of post-operative dizziness. Intoduction: A well-known and frequently reported complication after cochlear implantation is the appearance of postoperative vertigo symptoms. The aim of the present study was to observe if the postoperatively new occurrence of vertigo can be treated by r…

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: The reason of gradually developing conductive hearing loss in otosclerotic patients is the ossification of the stapes footplate to the surrounding bony structures and the therapy of stapes fixation is mainly surgical. In stapedotomy the footplate of the stapes is fenestrated with laser and microdrill in a diameter of 0.8 mm, whereas in stapedectomy there is complete removal of the footplate followed by the reconstruction of the ossicular chain. In the early postoperative period, temporary vertigo is frequently recorded which significantly influences the recovery.

Stroke involving the brainstem and cerebellum frequently presents acute vestibular syndrome. Although vascular vertigo is known to usually accompany other neurologic symptoms and signs, isolated vertigo from small infarcts involving the cerebellum or brainstem has been increasingly recognized. Bedside neuro-otologic examination can reliably differentiate acute vestibular syndrome due to stroke from more benign inner ear disease. Sometimes acute isolated audiovestibular loss may herald impending infarction in the territory of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. Accurate identification of i…

Neuritis vestibularis (NV) as a cause of vertigo is common among adults but very rare among children and is often underrecognized and underdiagnosed. Viral infection is suspected to be the most common cause and symptoms are sudden onset of vertigo, nausea, vomiting, impaired balance and horizontal nystagmus. This case report describes a three-year-old boy diagnosed with NV. To our knowledge it is the first case diagnosed in Denmark.

Migrainous vertigo is a common cause of dizziness presenting to an otorhinolaryngology/otoneurology clinic. Although it causes a substantial burden to the individual and society there are no randomized controlled trails on prophylactic medication for this condition. Flunarizine, a calcium channel blocker has been used effectively in both migraine and vestibular conditions. This randomized control trial was undertaken in a tertiary academic referral center to evaluate the efficacy of flunarizine in patients with migrainous vertigo when compared to non-specific vestibular treatment of betahistin…

One of the most important questions within the field of vertigo-diagnosis is the proof or the exclusion of a vestibular impairment, the spectrum of appropriate diagnostic tools has been expanded by the head impulse test and the vibratory test in the last years. The head impulse test is a method to examine the functionality of single semicircular canals. As clinical "bedside test" it is an already established part of the diagnostic procedures, as an apparative method with registration and quantitative analysis, however, it is available for general in-office use only recently. The vibratory test…

An aim of this study was to assess clinical efficacy and tolerability of tagista in the symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo and Ménière syndrome. Thirty-two patients, 16 women and 16 men, aged from 25 to 67 years, were examined. Vertigo was caused by chronic brain ischemia in 17 cases and by the disturbance of blood circulation in the vertebral-basilar system in 14 patients with osteochondrosis of cervical spine. One patient was diagnosed with Ménière syndrome. Tagista was used in dose 24 mg twice a day during 4 weeks in the combination with standard treatment, exercise therapy and sta…

The clinical diagnosis of migraine-associated vertigo may be difficult because it shares features with some other clinical conditions. This communication presents a systematic review on the epidemiology and theories of pathophysiology of migraine-associated vertigo and its distinguishing features from peripheral vestibular disorders. We searched the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and Google scholar for all the studies on migraine-associated vertigo published in English language between 1966 and 2010. Their references were also reviewed for completion. Data from the studies were independently extra…

Migraine in childhood and adolescence has been associated with the presence of behavioural and emotional difficulties, but only few data are available with respect to unusual types of headache syndromes such as Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo of Childhood (BPVC). Aim of the present study was to evaluate the behavioural and emotional profiles of clinically referred children and adolescents suffering from BPVC and migraine, as compared to normal controls. According to the revised International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-2) the BPVC belongs to the category of "primary headache", as a mi…

The aim of this study was to determine the association of benign recurrent vertigo (BRV) and migraine, using standardized questionnaire-based interview of 208 patients with BRV recruited through a University Neurotology clinic. Of 208 patients with BRV, 180 (87%) met the International Classification of Headache Disorders 2004 criteria for migraine: 112 migraine with aura (62%) and 68 without aura (38%). Twenty-eight (13%) did not meet criteria for migraine. Among patients with migraine, 70% experienced headache, one or more auras, photophobia, or auditory symptoms with some or all of their ver…

Dizziness and vertigo are frequently reported by patients with migraine. In migrainous vertigo (MV), vertigo is causally related to migraine. Patients of MV usually have an attenuated or absent headache with their vertigo as compared with their usual headache of migraine. Here we report three female patients of MV in which administration of triptan was associated with induction (two patients) or exacerbation (one patient) of headache with disappearance of vertigo. We suggest that headache and vertigo of migraine may be inversely related to each other and suppression of one may induce or aggrav…

The more common symptoms of the jugulotympanic paragangliomas are hearing loss, tinnitus and palsy of cranial nerves. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the slow growth of the tumour. We report one case with affectation of jugular foramen which clinically debuted as a peripheral vertigo and the diagnosis was made by CT, IRM and angiography. The patient was treated by Neurosurgery using Gamma Knife (radiosurgery) with good result.

Roentgen computed tomography (RCT) and MR-imaging (MRI) were used in investigation of vertigo etiology and affection of the cochleovestibular analyzer in 130 patients aged 28 to 74 years with recurrent systemic rotatory vertigo or its other symptoms. All the patients have undergone comprehensive otoneurological examination, RCT and MRI which showed that peripheral cochleovestibular syndromes (PCVS) caused by arterial hypertension (AH), atherosclerosis (AS), vascular dystonia (VD) are rarely characterized by focal alterations in the brain. PCVS comparison with blood flow in the vertebral arteri…

Headache and vertigo often emerge simultaneously. Fifty six (40%) out of 140 patients complaining of vertigo were studied. Emerging in the aura and/or in headache phases, vertigo was more frequently registered in patients suffered from migraine with aura (57%). Vertigo associated with migraine was diagnosed in 25% of the cases. The patients were randomized into 2 equal identical groups, one of which was treated by betaserc (16 mg, 3 times daily before meal) and the other one was given cinnarizine (25 mg, 3 times daily). Treatment duration was 12 weeks. Reduction of vertigo attacks frequency an…
