Neural Correlates of Optimal Multisensory Decision Making under Time-Varying Reliabilities with an Invariant Linear Probabilistic Population Code.

Perceptual decisions are often based on multiple sensory inputs whose reliabilities rapidly vary over time, yet little is known about how the brain integrates these inputs to optimize behavior. The optimal solution requires that neurons simply add their sensory inputs across time and modalities, as long as these inputs are encoded with an invariant linear probabilistic population code (ilPPC). While this theoretical possibility has been raised before, it has never been tested experimentally. Here, we report that neural activities in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of macaques performing a

A Genetic Murine Model of Endolymphatic Hydrops: The Phex Mouse.

Animal models of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) provide critical insight into the pathophysiology of Meniere's disease (MD). A new genetic murine model, called the Phex mouse, circumvents prior need for a time and cost-intensive surgical procedure to create ELH. The Phex mouse model of ELH, which also has X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets, creates a postnatal, spontaneous, and progressive ELH whose phenotype has a predictable decline of vestibular and hearing function reminiscent of human MD. The Phex mouse enables real-time histopathologic analysis to assess diagnostic and therapeutic interventi

Subcortical contributions to head movements in macaques. II. Connections of a medial pontomedullary head-movement region.

1. In the companion article, a variety of head movements were elicited by stimulation in, and adjacent to, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Cowie and Robinson 1994). We refer to this area, caudal to the abducens nucleus, as the gigantocellular head movement region. In the present paper, the anatomical connections of this region, as determined by injections of wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), are reported. The majority of efferent and afferent connections were with areas related to head movements. 2. Efferent fibers from the region projected via two paths

Further observations in the eighth nerve in Menière's disease.

Forty patients with advanced Menière's disease were operated upon by vestibular or eighth nerve neurectomy. The biopsied nerve specimens were studed by light and electron microscopy. Round areas containing no or very few axons and bundles of proliferated processes of fibrous astrocytes were found in six cases. A combination of clinical and histopathologic findings suggests that some patients with symptoms identical to Menière's disease might have a primary neuronal disease leading to nonspecific reparative response by fibrous astrocytes.

Age-related primary cochlear neuronal degeneration in human temporal bones.

In cases of acquired sensorineural hearing loss, death of cochlear neurons is thought to arise largely as a result of sensory-cell loss. However, recent studies of acoustic overexposure report massive degeneration of the cochlear nerve despite complete hair cell survival (Kujawa and Liberman, J Neurosci 29:14077-14085, 2009). To assess the primary loss of spiral ganglion cells (SGCs) in human ears, neuronal counts were performed in 100 temporal bones from 100 individuals, aged newborn to 100 years, selected to include only cases with a normal population of inner and outer hair cells. Ganglion

Vestibulo-ocular and optokinetic deficits in albinos with congenital nystagmus.

Vestibular and optokinetic responses were recorded in three albino subjects with congenital nystagmus. Although an ice-water caloric stimulus did not elicit nystagmus, all patients showed a response to rotational stimuli containing high frequency components. Vestibular responses to a constant velocity rotation decremented with abnormally short time constants of 1-2 sec (normal 15-20 sec). For sinusoidal oscillation, in one subject, the cut-off frequency (where the amplitude of the response was 70% of maximum) was increased to 0.8 Hz (normal about 0.01 Hz). Full-field optokinetic stimulation ge

Excitatory termination of abducens internuclear neurons on medial rectus motoneurons: relationship to syndrome of internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

1. Field potentials and intracellular records were obtained from the medial rectus subdivision of the IIIrd nucleus in anesthetized cats following electrical stimulation of the abducens nuclei, vestibular nerves, pontomedullary brain stem, and the medial longitudinal fasciculi (MLF). 2. Stimulation of the contralateral abducens nucleus produced unique field potentials in the medial rectus subdivision. They consisted of an early sharp transient volley followed by a slower postsynaptic negativity. 3. Monosynaptic EPSPs were evoked in medial rectus motoneurons following contralateral abducens nuc

Noisy vestibular stimulation improves autonomic and motor responsiveness in central neurodegenerative disorders.

The vestibular nerves are known to influence neuronal circuits in the medullary cardiovascular areas and, through the cerebellar vermis, the basal ganglia and the limbic system. By means of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), it might be possible to ameliorate blunted responsiveness of degenerated neuronal circuits of patients with multi system atrophy or Parkinson's disease, or both. We evaluated the effect of 24-hour noisy GVS on long-term heart rate dynamics in 7 patients with multi system atrophy and on daytime trunk activity dynamics in 12 patients with either levodopa-responsive

Increased cell death in the developing vestibulocochlear ganglion complex of the mouse after prenatal ethanol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that excessive prenatal alcohol exposure can damage the auditory and vestibular systems, in particular, cochlear hair cells. However, the direct effect of ethanol on the peripheral neurons in these pathways has not been examined. To study the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on the developing vestibulocochlear ganglion (VCG) complex and the peripheral sensory organs, we exposed pregnant mice to ethanol and examined the levels of cell death in the inner ear. METHODS: Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were administered one of three doses of either ethanol

Delayed swayback in goat kids, a study of 23 cases.

The results of a retrospective study of 23 goat kids with delayed swayback are reported. Principal clinical signs were ataxia, loss of postural control, spasticity of the hindlimbs, and muscular weakness, often progressing to permanent recumbency. Denervation of skeletal muscles was demonstrated by electromyography in 2 kids. Three kids slowly recovered during hospitalisation. Histopathological changes were characterized by degeneration of selected neuronal populations with their processes within the central and the peripheral nervous system. Affected systems included upper motor neuron, vesti

Role of subjective visual vertical test during eccentric rotation in the recovery phase of vestibular neuritis.

OBJECTIVES: By assessing unilateral utricular function at the acute and subacute stages, we sought to determine the ability of the subjective visual vertical (SVV) during eccentric rotation (dynamic SVV) in detecting latent abnormality of otolith dysfunction in unilateral vestibular neuritis. In addition, we compared the validity of the dynamic SVV with static SVV during the compensated recovery phase. METHODS: The static SVV and dynamic SVV of 19 patients diagnosed with acute unilateral vestibular neuritis and 31 patients diagnosed with the subacute stage of vestibular neuritis were determin

Mapping of neural pathways that influence diaphragm activity and project to the lumbar spinal cord in cats.

During breathing, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles contract out of phase. However, during other behaviors (including vomiting, postural adjustments, and locomotion) simultaneous contractions are required of the diaphragm and other muscle groups including abdominal muscles. Recent studies in cats using transneuronal tracing techniques showed that in addition to neurons in the respiratory groups, cells in the inferior and lateral vestibular nuclei (VN) and medial pontomedullary reticular formation (MRF) influence diaphragm activity. The goal of the present study was to determine whether neuro

The early development of neurons with GABA immunoreactivity in the CNS of Xenopus laevis embryos.

We have used an antibody to glutaraldehyde fixation complexes of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) to stain the developing central nervous system of Xenopus laevis embryos. Neuronal somata, growth cones, axons, and dendrites were found with GABA-like immunoreactivity. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations were made of axons and synapses. By observation of the earliest stages of differentiation of neurons, seven classes of putative GABAergic interneurons were discerned. 1) Ascending neurons are first stained in the hindbrain at stage 26 and later extend caudally in the spinal cord.
