Motion sickness: an evolutionary hypothesis.

Since the occurrence of vomiting as a response to motion is both widespread and apparently disadvantageous, it presents a problem for evolutionary theory. An hypothesis is proposed suggesting that motion sickness is triggered by difficulties which arise in the programming of movements of the eyes or head when the relations between the spatial frameworks defined by the visual, vestibular, or proprioceptive inputs are repeatedly and unpredictably perturbed. Such perturbations may be produced by certain types of motion, or by disturbances in sensory input or motor control produced by ingested tox

[Dynamics of the otoneurologic symptoms after complete and partial removal of a tumor of the acoustic nerve at different stages of its development].

The peculiarities of the dynamics of the entire complex of otoneurologic symptoms were studied in 60 patients with a tumor of the acoustic nerve in stages II and III of the disease after total (in 38) and partial (in 22) resection of the neoplasm. The data obtained bore evidence that the dynamics of the otoneurologic symptoms depended on the developmental stage of the tumor, its relation to the brain stem, and the character of the operation (total or partial removal of the tumor). Total resection of the tumor in stage II proved most effective: in the residual period both stem vestibular disord

Human cochlear changes in noise induced hearing loss.

The temporal bone histopathological findings in 14 ears with noise induced hearing loss are presented. The morphological changes consist mainly of hair cell loss, which is more severe in the 9 mm to 13 mm region of the cochlear duct. Within the area of maximum hair cell loss, there is a greater loss of outer hair cells than of inner hair cells. There is a good correlation between the permanent auditory threshold shifts and the spatial location of the sensory lesion according to the anatomical frequency scale.

Changes in the vestibular function during space flight.

An analysis of observations and investigations carried out in space flight has shown that some cosmonauts and astronauts have experienced vestibular disorders during the transition to weightlessness. Vestibular-sensory disorders include: Spatial illusions (the feelings of falling down, being in an upside-down position, the sensations of rotation of the craft or the body) and vertigo occurring during the onset of the orbital flight and head movements; Feelings, similar to those experienced in response to Coriolis accelerations on the Earth, which occasionally develop in weightlessness during th

Temporal bone marrow of the rat and its connections to the inner ear.

Calvarial bone marrow has been found to be central in the brain immune response, being connected to the dura through channels which allow leukocyte trafficking. Temporal bone marrow is thought to play important roles in relation to the inner ear, but is still largely uncharacterized, given this bone complex anatomy. We characterized the geometry and connectivity of rat temporal bone marrow using lightsheet imaging of cleared samples and microCT. Bone marrow was identified in cleared tissue by cellular content (and in particular by the presence of megakaryocytes); since air-filled cavities are

Bilateral vestibulopathy with dissociated deficits in the superior and inferior vestibular systems.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to reveal the clinical characteristics of dissociated bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) affecting the superior vestibular nerve system on one side and the inferior vestibular nerve system on the other side. It is probable that BV does not always show bilateral deficits of the same vestibular nerve system. METHODS: In a retrospective study of 2,752 consecutive new patients, 1,560 patients had undergone both caloric testing and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing. All 1,560 patients had also undergone a battery of tests including standardized

Ganglion cell populations in labyrinthitis ossificans.

Ossification of the perilymphatic spaces of the inner ear is frequently found in patients with profound deafness who may be candidates for cochlear implantation. The ossification may be a hindrance in electrode insertion and has previously been considered a relative contraindication to implantation. The quantity of peripheral auditory elements remaining in a series of patients with labyrinthitis ossificans has not been reviewed. We performed a histopathologic study of 16 temporal bones with partial cochlear ossification of multiple etiologies. The organ of Corti and spiral ganglion were graphi

Histologic and statistical studies on hyalin bodies in the human endolymphatic sac.

Hyalin bodies are amorphous, eosinophilic masses that protrude from the subepithelial connective tissue into the lumen of the endolymphatic sac. In this study, hyalin bodies were analyzed in two groups of temporal bones: normal bones and bones with cochlear otosclerosis. The results revealed that bones with cochlear otosclerosis had significantly more and larger hyalin bodies that did normal bones. In addition, the hyalin bodies in cochlear otosclerosis were denser and associated with more edema and loose connective tissue in the surrounding areas. Foamy macrophages, concentric calcific struct

Medical treatment of nystagmus and ocular motor disorders.

An increased compendium of drugs useful in ocular motor system dysfunction has expanded our capacity to treat selected ocular motility disorders. Adjunctive therapeutic modes (e.g., Fresnel prisms and orthoptic exercises) can also be beneficial. PAN and see-saw nystagmus can be treated with baclofen. Downbeat nystagmus may respond to clonazepam therapy, and prisms may help if the nystagmus can be modified with convergence. Congenital nystagmus may respond minimally to drugs (e.g., baclofen), but prisms or surgical procedures, or both, are still the primary treatment modalities. Innovar may be

Clinical evaluation of dysrhythmia of postrotatory nystagmus.

Postrotatory responses of nystagmus were analysed in an exponential model by utilizing linear regression analysis. Four nystagmus qualities (velocity and duration of slow and fast phases) were studied in 10 patients with vestibular peripheral lesions, 10 patients with frontal lobe lesions and 10 patients with brain-stem lesions, together with 10 control subjects. In addition, pauses during the responses were quantified. Patients with frontal lobe lesions differed from other groups by scoring higher values of slow phase velocity and by exhibiting more pauses. The time constant was significantly

Vestibular syndrome associated with temporohyoid joint fusion and temporal bone fracture in three horses.

Acute onset of vestibulocochlear and facial nerve dysfunction due to a stress fracture of the petrous part of the temporal bone was diagnosed in 3 horses. The fracture was secondary to chronic inflammatory changes in the petrous part of the temporal bone and the proximal stylohyoid bone, with fusion of the temporohyoid joint. Bacterial meningoencephalitis was a complicating factor. Treatment resulted in reduction of severity of clinical signs in 2 of the 3 cases, but residual compensated vestibular deficits persisted.
