Using Vibration for Secure Pairing With Implantable Medical Devices: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Implantable medical devices (IMDs), such as pacemakers, increasingly communicate wirelessly with external devices. To secure this wireless communication channel, a pairing process is needed to bootstrap a secret key between the devices. Previous work has proposed pairing approaches that often adopt a "seamless" design and render the pairing process imperceptible to patients. This lack of user perception can significantly compromise security and pose threats to patients. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the use of highly perceptible vibrations for pairing with IMDs and aim to …

Frequency-dependent effects of hip abductor vibration and surface translation on mediolateral sway.

The control of mediolateral standing balance is altered in many clinical populations, due in part to disrupted sensorimotor processing. Sensory perturbations, as evoked by musculotendon vibration, can provide insight into the contributions of individual sources of sensory feedback to this control. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether hip abductor vibration can elicit mediolateral sway at frequencies <1 Hz, which dominate standing posture. Secondarily, we quantified the effects of mediolateral surface translations in this frequency range. Participants (n=12) without neurological…

Drilling with exoskeletons: effect of hand-arm vibration on neurological and muscular outcomes.

Exoskeletons can be used in workplaces where vibrating power tools are applied. The influence of these support systems on vibration exposure and impact remains unclear. In an experimental laboratory study, the influence of two passive exoskeletons for the upper body when working with a drill was compared to a task without exoskeletons. Vibration exposure, transmissibility to the wrist, feed force, muscle activity, muscle fatigue, posture and vibration perception thresholds were measured on 30 subjects. Vibration exposure at the machine handle was higher with both exoskeletons than without an e…

Mechanical Response and Microstructure Evolution of TA1 Titanium Under Normal Ultrasonic Vibration Processing.

Ultrasonic vibration (UV) has been employed in various plastic forming processes due to its special effect known as acoustoplasticity. Mostly, UV is applied along the longitudinal direction in experimental investigations. However, very few studies have focused on normal UV-assisted uniaxial tension, which is more similar to the loading state of sheet metal in actual forming processes. Herein, normal UV-assisted tension tests on a TA1 thin sheet are performed to study its mechanical properties and microstructure evolution. The macro-mechanical behavior is demonstrated by stress-strain curves un…

Analytical prediction of groundwater loss in deep coal mines induced by ground vibration.

Deep coal mining induces geomechanical perturbations that threaten aquifer integrity. This study develops an analytical model coupling Fourier's heat conduction and Cauchy's momentum equations to predict groundwater depletion under dynamic stress from vibrations (0-6 MPa). Laboratory tests on Datong Mine samples (coal seam No. 12) yielded baseline parameters, including soil cohesion (C = 1.0 MPa) and Poisson ratio (ν = 0.35). The simulation uses an effective elastic modulus (E = 12.5 GPa) to represent the fractured coal-rock mass under vibrational loading. Results show vibration-induced fractu…

Modeling and Analysis of Bio-Inspired, Reconfigurable, Piezo-Driven Vibration Isolator for Spacecraft.

The positioning accuracy of spacecraft in orbit is easily affected by low-frequency micro-vibrations of the environment and internal disturbances caused by the payload. Inspired by the neck structure of birds, this study devised a piezo-driven active vibration isolation unit with high stiffness. First, a dynamic model and two-sensor feedback control method for the isolation unit were developed, and the isolation mechanism and anti-disturbance characteristics were analyzed. Further, the stability of the closed-loop was verified. Simulation models of serial and parallel systems based on the prop…

Low-magnitude high-frequency vibration reduces prostate cancer growth and extravasation in vitro.

Prostate cancer (PCa) continues to rank among the most common malignancies in Europe and North America with significant mortality rates despite advancements in detection and treatment. Physical activity is often recommended to PCa patients due to its benefits in preventing disease recurrence and managing treatment-related side effects. However, physical activity may be challenging for elderly or bedridden patients. As such, vibration therapy has been proposed as a safe, effective, and easy to perform alternative treatment that may confer similar effects as physical exercise. Specifically, low-…

Vibration exposure uncovers a critical early developmental window for zebrafish caudal fin development.

Mechanical influencers have long been shown to affect mature bone. Bone mechanosensation is a key feature that allows the skeleton to adapt to environmental constraints. In this study, we describe the response of immature, developing bones to a mechanical stimulus. To do so, zebrafish larvae at different stages of development were exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) at a low frequency of 20 Hz, for up to 4 days. Whole mount Alizarin red and Alcian blue staining revealed age-related and bone type-specific defects. Specifically, the parhypural and hypural 1 caudal fin endoskeletal elements wer…

Direct Observation of Discharge Phenomena in Vibration-Assisted Micro EDM of Array Structures.

The batch mode electrical discharge machining (EDM) method has been developed to improve the throughput and accuracy in fabricating array structures, but the process suffers from insufficient debris removal caused by the complex electrode geometry. Tool vibration has been used to improve flushing conditions, but to date the underlying mechanism of the tool vibration on the micro EDM of array structures remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of tool vibration on the machining process by direct observation of the discharge phenomena in the discharge gap by using a high-speed…

Effective mass of cavity-vibration polaritons formed in etalons with liquid carbon tetrachloride.

Etalons are pairs of parallel plate mirrors with wavelength-scale spacing that exhibit cavity modes, giving transmission maxima (fringes) due to constructive interference. Infrared transmission measurements as a function of angle were used to determine the effective mass of etalon cavity modes using a gap filled with air and then liquid carbon tetrachloride. The air-filled etalon gives results in agreement with pure photon expectations established herein. Liquids with vibrations having strong infrared transition intensity (vibrational strong coupling mode) can strongly perturb the pattern of t…
