Two hundred and forty nucleotides from the pre-M gene region of 10 Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus strains isolated in Malaysia in 1992 were sequenced and compared with the other JE virus strains from different geographic areas in Asia. Our JE virus strains belong to the largest genotypic group that includes strains isolated in temperate regions such as Japan, China, and Taiwan. Our Malaysian JE virus strains differed in 32 nucleotides (13.3%) from WTP/70/22 strain isolated from Malaysia in 1970, which belonged to another distinct genotypic group.

These can be exogenous, transmitted via maternal milk, or endogenous, as proviral integrations into the mouse genome, transmitted vertically in a Mendelian fashion. Four hundred and three nasopharyngeal aspirates from hospitalized children have been analysed for RSV, influenza A and B, parainfluenza 3, adenovirus, with Monofluor Kits Diagnostics Pasteur. One hundred and seventeen positive samples were found, RSV: 69, influenza A: 17, influenza B: 12, parainfluenza 3: 2 and adenovirus: 17. Rapid diagnosis of viral diseases allows to decrease the incidence of nosocomial infections, to watch over infants carrying RSV who might develop severe bronchiolitis. Eighteen equids were inoculated with eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) and 18 equids with western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) viruses to produce EEE virus- and WEE virus-immunized equids. The nucleotide sequence has been determined for the matrix (M) protein gene of three strains, Niigata-1, ZH and Biken, of cell-associated subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus. The M proteins of the Niigata-1 and ZH strains were found to terminate prematurely as a result of nonsense mutations at nucleotide positions 68 and 96 respectively. Breda virus serotype 1 (Iowa) was isolated from a severe outbreak of neonatal calf diarrhoea in which 15% of the diarrhoeic animals died. Two further isolates, one from Iowa and one from Ohio, are antigenically related to the first isolate but belong to the Breda virus serotype 2 group by haemagglutination inhibition and by immuno-electron microscopy (IEM). The majority (88.5%) of cattle are serologically positive for Breda virus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blastogenesis and delayed-type hypersensitivity assays were used to examine mouse T cell responses to five viruses representing the three genera of the Paramyxoviridae. Cross-reactive T cell responses were observed in a lympho-proliferative assay for measles, mumps, respiratory syncytial, canine distemper and parainfluenza type 3 virus. Confirmation of T cell cross-reactivity among measles, mumps and respiratory syncytial virus was obtained with a delayed-type hypersensitivity test. Avian osteopetrosis is a proliferative bone disorder initiated at high frequency by MAV-2(O), a subgroup B avian myeloblastosis-associated virus. To examine the role of the MAV-2(O) genome in osteopetrosis induction, a series of recombinant viruses between MAV-2(O) and RAV-O was constructed. Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) and enterovirus 71 (E71), which cause hand, foot and mouth disease, were compared with respect to their polypeptide composition by PAGE. Only three proteins were resolved for CA16, whereas the four characteristic structural proteins of E71, (VP1, VP2, VP3 and VP4) were separated. The distribution of labeled proteins suggested that the molecular weights of VP2 and VP3 of CA16 were very similar. The smallest protein, VP4, of CA16 and E71 had the same molecular weight, but the other proteins of the two serotypes were different in their molecular weights.

This report describes the inactivation of lipid-containing viruses by several long-chain alcohols. A striking peak in antiviral activity was found for saturated alcohols having chain lengths from 10 to 14 carbons. Viruses having different membrane structure showed different susceptibilities to alcohols having different chain lengths and structural features. Parvovirus-like particles found in the sera of two blood donors had the size and appearance on electron microscopy of a virus (B19) found in the serum of a blood donor by Cossart et al. (1975), and those of a virus found in the feces of a normal subject. Influenza virus particles bind rapidly to vesicular stomatitis, Sindbis, or Rauscher murine leukemia virus particles, forming mixed aggregates demonstrable by electron microscopy. The normal hemagglutinating property of influenza virus is inhibited by these viruses, providing a rapid quantitative assay. Prior treatment with neuraminidase blocks the ability of other viruses to inhibit influenza virus hemagglutination.
