Melatonin binding in the house sparrow song control system: sexual dimorphism and the effect of photoperiod.

Avian song is a sexually dimorphic behavior which is regulated seasonally. This regulation involves the construction and growth of song control structures: the high vocal center (HVC), nucleus robustus archistrialis (RA), nucleus magnocellularis anterior (MAN), and Area X. Song behavior and its neural correlates are controlled by steroid-dependent and independent processes. The avian circadian system is known to be involved in both daily processes and seasonal reproduction. A major part of this system is the circadian secretion of melatonin by the pineal gland. To determine possible interactio

Organization of the zebra finch song control system: II. Functional organization of outputs from nucleus Robustus archistriatalis.

The organization of projections from nucleus robustus archistriatalis (RA) was mapped by a combination of anatomical tracer techniques. After injections of retrograde tracers in the syringeal part of the hypoglossal motor nucleus (nXIIts), labelled cells were seen in ipsilateral RA, in agreement with previous work. However, a shallow band in the dorsal and dorsocaudal part of RA did not contain labelled cells. Cells in this "cap" area were labelled following tracer injections in the dorsomedial nucleus of midbrain ICo (DM), the other known target of RA projections. The topography of outputs to

The domestication of the wolf larynx-testing the neural crest connection.

The neural crest domestication syndrome (NCDS) hypothesis suggests that selection pressures for tameness during animal domestication resulted in a down-regulation of neural crest cell migration and proliferation, providing a mechanistic explanation for traits commonly observed across domesticates. We test the viability of this hypothesis via a derived prediction. According to the NCDS hypothesis, neural crest-derived structures should be reduced throughout the entire organism in domesticated variants compared to their wild ancestors. Here, we test this prediction by comparing the larynges of w

Motor constellation theory: A model of infants' phonological development.

Every normally developing human infant solves the difficult problem of mapping their native-language phonology, but the neural mechanisms underpinning this behavior remain poorly understood. Here, motor constellation theory, an integrative neurophonological model, is presented, with the goal of explicating this issue. It is assumed that infants' motor-auditory phonological mapping takes place through infants' orosensory "reaching" for phonological elements observed in the language-specific ambient phonology, via reference to kinesthetic feedback from motor systems (e.g., articulators), and aud

Congenital malformations caused by Stryphnodendron fissuratum (Leg. Mimosoideae) in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of Stryphnodendron fissuratum pods in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and test the hypothesis that this plant has teratogenic effects. Thus, sixteen guinea pigs were randomly divided into four groups of four animals each. Groups 10, 20 and 40 consisted of guinea pigs that received commercial food that contained crushed pods of S. fissuratum at concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 g/kg, respectively, during the period of organogenesis. Control group consisted of guinea pigs under the same management conditions that did not receive crushed pods of S. f

Dynamic horizontal cultural transmission of humpback whale song at the ocean basin scale.

Cultural transmission, the social learning of information or behaviors from conspecifics, is believed to occur in a number of groups of animals, including primates, cetaceans, and birds. Cultural traits can be passed vertically (from parents to offspring), obliquely (from the previous generation via a nonparent model to younger individuals), or horizontally (between unrelated individuals from similar age classes or within generations). Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have a highly stereotyped, repetitive, and progressively evolving vocal sexual display or "song" that functions in

Involvement of the aero-digestive tract in swallowing-ventilation coordination: an animal study.

BACKGROUND: The precise coordination of swallowing and ventilation is considered an important mechanism for minimizing the risk of pulmonary aspiration. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the aero-digestive tract is involved in swallowing-ventilation coordination in rats. METHODS: The goal of the first part of the study was to characterize swallowing events associated with ventilation signals obtained using a barometric plethysmograph. This was done in seven rats with the help of esophageal electromyograms. Thereafter, swallowing-ventilation coordination was assessed in 15

Systematics of the Little Red Tree Frog, Litoria rubella (Anura: Pelodryadidae), with the description of two new species from eastern Australia and arid Western Australia.

The Litoria rubella species complex (L. capitula and L. rubella) is distributed across much of continental Australia, southern New Guinea, and the Tanimbar Islands of Indonesia, in habitats ranging from deserts to tropical forests. We carried out an appraisal of molecular genetics, advertisement calls, and morphological variation in the species complex. Analyses of thousands of nuclear gene SNPs and nucleotide sequences from the mitochondrial ND4 gene identified four reciprocally monophyletic lineages in both marker types, two exclusively in Australia, one in Australia/New Guinea and one from

Regulation of glycosaminoglycan biogenesis is critical for sensitive-period-dependent vocal ontogeny.

In the brain, the extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a central role during neural development and thus modulates critical-period regulated behavioral ontogeny. The major components of the ECM are glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including chondroitin sulfate (CS). However, the specific roles of GAGs in behavioral development are largely unknown. It has been shown that xylosides affect the biological functions of GAGs through modulating GAG biosynthesis. Particularly, xylosides affect GAG biosynthesis through priming of GAG chains (priming activity), competing with endogenous core proteins that carry GA

The acoustical role of vocal tract in the horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus pusillus.

The sound field distribution in the vocal tract with a single sound source in the glottis and the transfer function of the supraglottal vocal tract of the horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus pusillus, have been obtained using the finite-element method (FEM) technique. The models of vocal tracts used for FEM calculation are constructed by tomography scanning. These models are used to set up a finite-element model for calculating the sound field distribution by loading the unit sound source in the glottis. By changing the frequency of the unit sound source, the frequency response was figured out and the

Injection laryngoplasty with calcium hydroxylapatite gel implant in an in vivo canine model.

The ideal injectable agent for vocal fold medialization is biocompatible, durable, sized to prevent phagocytosis and migration, and formulated for easy injection and does not adversely affect the viscoelastic properties of the vocal fold. We tested a cohesive implant of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) particles in a gel carrier in an in vivo canine model of phonation. Six dogs underwent unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve section and injection laryngoplasty of the paralyzed vocal fold with a CaHA implant. The six follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, and the la

Human perception of avian biodiversity in naturalistic auditory scenes.

Natural environments are filled with a diverse array of sound sources, from bird vocalizations and insect stridulations to waterfalls and wind noise. The sounds often co-occur, arriving at the ear of human listeners as a mixture of the different sources. The auditory system is tasked with segregating the individual sound sources of the mixture into meaningful representations. In contrast with human auditory perception in urban environments, which include speech and music, little is known about our capacity to segregate mixtures common in natural environments. Here, we report on the capacities

Song but not colour divergence constrains hybridization in birds.

Mating signals, such as songs or plumage ornamentation, are key prezygotic barriers that promote behavioral isolation by ensuring that individuals are able to mate with conspecifics and avoid the costs of hybridization. Previous family-level comparative studies in birds have revealed that song similarity is positively correlated with the incidence of hybridization, whereas genomic research in avian hybrid zones suggests that plumage divergence does not necessarily prevent gene flow. However, no study has jointly evaluated the relative contribution of both signalling modalities to hybridization

Simultaneous recording of ultrasonic vocalizations and sniffing from socially interacting individual rats using a miniature microphone.

Vocalizations are pivotal in mammalian communication, especially in humans. Rodents accordingly rely on ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) that reflect their internal state as a primary channel during social interactions. However, attributing vocalizations to specific individuals remains challenging, impeding internal state assessment. Rats emit 50-kHz USVs to indicate positive states and intensify sniffing during alertness and social interactions. Here, we present a method involving a miniature microphone attached to the rat nasal cavity that allows to capture both male and female individual rat

Vocal development during postnatal growth and ear morphology in a shrew that generates seismic vibrations, Diplomesodon pulchellum.

The ability of adult and subadult piebald shrews (Diplomesodon pulchellum) to produce 160Hz seismic waves is potentially reflected in their vocal ontogeny and ear morphology. In this study, the ontogeny of call variables and body traits was examined in 11 litters of piebald shrews, in two-day intervals from birth to 22 days (subadult), and ear structure was investigated in two specimens using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Across ages, the call fundamental frequency (f0) was stable in squeaks and clicks and increased steadily in screeches, representing an unusual, non-descending ontogen

Effects of Gold laser on the avian chorioallantoic membrane.

OBJECTIVES: Office-based lasers have revolutionized the treatment of laryngeal disease. The 980-nm Gold laser is a device that may offer some practical advantages over other office lasers. The chick chorioallantoic membrane has been proposed as a model for predicting the effects of photoangiolytic lasers on vocal fold microvasculature. We sought to evaluate the effects of the Gold laser in this model. METHODS: Vascular reactions in first-order vessels were determined for the Gold laser with both 0 degree straight and 30 degrees angled laser fibers. Vessels were treated at 15 W and a 500-ms pu

Temporal structure in zebra finch song: implications for motor coding.

Adult zebra finch songs consist of stereotyped sequences of syllables. Although some behavioral and physiological data suggest that songs are structured hierarchically, there is also evidence that they are driven by nonhierarchical, clock-like bursting in the premotor nucleus HVC (used as a proper name). In this study, we developed a semiautomated template-matching algorithm to identify repeated sequences of syllables and a modified dynamic time-warping algorithm to make fine-grained measurements of the temporal structure of song. We find that changes in song length are expressed across the so
