A dead elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) calf was diagnosed with bacillary hemoglobinuria, a toxemia caused by the bacterium Clostridium haemolyticum. The mortality occurred in southwest Washington, USA (46 degrees 13'N, 123 degrees 22'W), in an area in which several previous mortalities, suspected but not conclusively diagnosed to be either bacillary hemoglobinuria, enterotoxemia, or leptospirosis, occurred. When malignant lesions of the oral cavity, base of tongue, and oropharynx are treated with radical resection, adequate reconstruction is required. The free gastric mucosal flap with microvascular transfer is being used with increasing frequency at Washington University Medical Center. Cat-scratch disease in breast lymph node tissue may present as a mass lesion and require clinical investigation to rule out malignancy. Four cases involving prepectoral lymph nodes have been diagnosed at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Mammographic findings of a smooth-edged soft-tissue density without spiculation or calcification may suggest the diagnosis. Warthin-Starry silver impregnation of tissue sections is the preferred method of diagnosis, and should be added to the diagnostic workup of granulomatous lesions of the breast.

Rats were exposed by inhalation to 9.4 mg/m3 size-fractionated volcanic ash for 5 days (2 hr/day) and examined for changes in pulmonary function and histology for periods of up to 1 year. Fine-mode volcanic ash, SO2, and a combination of ash and SO2 produced no observable effects in normal rats and rats with elastase-induced emphysema.
