Association of HLA-B gene polymorphism and blood groups with COVID-19 susceptibility and severity.

The COVID-19 pandemic gave insight into how host genetics influence the ability to get infected and how severe the infection will be if contracted. Among these, the HLA polymorphisms and ABO blood groups are known to influence the immune system. This study examines the correlation between HLA-B genotypes, blood groups, and the severity of COVID-19. A total of 984 COVID-19 patient samples and control samples were collected from different regions of Pakistan. Throat and nasopharyngeal swabs were obtained for molecular detection of SARS-CoV-2, and blood samples were collected for HLA-B genotyping

[Patient safety and root cause analysis].

Safety in the field of transfusion medicine has greatly improved in France. The risk of viral transmission has decreased by a factor greater than 1500 within the last 20 years. In comparison, the risk related to ABO error has decreased only by half. The reporting of critical incidents, which occur at any step of the transfusion procedure is now mandatory in France and is subject to an in-depth analysis, using methods close to that used in aviation safety. The goal of these analyses is to better understand human factors in order to implement more adequate prevention measures.

Alloimmunisation in thalassaemics: a comparison between recipients of usual matched and partial better matched blood. An evaluation at a tertiary care centre in India.

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing controversy regarding provision of usually matched blood (i.e. matched for ABO-D antigens) or phenotypically matched blood (also matched for Rh and Kell antigens) for multiply transfused thalassaemics, especially in developing countries. A pilot study conducted at our centre revealed an alloimmunisation rate of 3.79% with Rh and Kell alloantibodies accounting for 90% of all antibodies. The present cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the impact of a policy of partial better matching (for Rh cDE and Kell antigens) of blood on alloimmunisation in thalassa

Clinico-serologic co-relation in bi-directional ABO incompatible hemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The ABO blood group system is of prime significance in red cell transfusion and organ transplantation. However, ABO compatibility is not critical in allogenic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and approximately 40-50% of hemopoietic stem cell transplants are ABO incompatible. This incompatibility may be major, minor or bi-directional. Though there are descriptions of transfusion practice and protocols in ABO incompatible HSCT, there are considerable variations and transfusion support in these patients can be very challenging. AIMS: The immunohematologic observations in

[Frequency and titration of hemolytic activity of anti-A and anti-B antibodies in mothers of children with jaundice in Yaoundé, Cameroon].

INTRODUCTION: The alloimmunization of the ABO blood group system is involved in neonatal jaundice with a considerable overall prevalence. The role of ABO incompatibility is relatively little known. The purpose of this study was to investigate neonatal jaundice due to feto-maternal ABO incompatibilities and to determine the link between the hemolysins value in the mother and the degree of jaundice observed in the infant. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study from June to November 2015. The study population was exclusively composed of moms who were blood type O with children who were a

[Positive Coomb's test in newborns; causes and clinical consequences Summary of cases diagnosed in the Blood Bank in the years 2005 to 2012].

INTRODUCTION: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is caused by the destruction of fetal red blood cells due to red cell antibodies produced by the mother. HDFN can cause fetal hydrops during pregnancy or neonatal jaundice after birth. Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) detects antibodies bound to red cells and is a valuable test aiding in the diagnosis of HDFN. In Iceland DAT is routinely performed on cord blood or newborn blood samples if the mother is Rhesus D negative or has non-A/B red cell alloantibodies. The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and consequences of po

ABO hemolytic disease of newborn : Does newborn's blood group a risk factor?

BACKGROUND: Due to the marked decline of maternal-fetal rhesus incompatibility, ABO alloimmunization has become the leading cause of the newborn hemolytic disease. It is estimated that 15-25 % of all pregnancies are concerned by ABO incompatibility. AIM: Neonatal blood group B seems to be more predisposing to acute hemolysis and severe hyperbilirubinemia. We propose to find if the newborn's blood group B represents a risk factor for severe hemolysis and/or severe hyperbilirubinemia. METHODS: We conducted a comparative study in the pediatrics department "B" of the Children Hospital of Tunis.

A case of nearly mistaken AB para-Bombay blood group donor transplanted to a group 'O' recipient.

Unintentional ABO mismatch kidney transplantation can cause detrimental hyperacute rejection. We report the first successful ABO incompatible kidney transplantation from an AB para-Bombay donor to O recipient. At the initial evaluation, the donor's ABO type was discordance on the cell typing and serum typing, which typed to be 'O' as cell typing and 'AB' as serum typing. At the second investigation, it was confirmed that the donor had a unique, rare but not uncommon blood type AB para-Bombay which was incompatible with the recipient's blood group. The kidney transplantation was successfully pe

Acquired alteration in the expression of blood groups in a patient with sideroblastic anemia and chronic renal failure.

A patient with well-differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma in remission presented with renal failure, sideroblastic anemia, and an acquired diminution in the expression of A antigen on his red cells. Other red cell antigens (H, M, i, and I) also were expressed weakly. Lewis antigen was expressed only in secretions. The diminished expression of the A antigen could not be accounted for by diminution in the specific glycosyl transferases responsible for its expression, since the activity in the serum of both the H enzyme (alpha 1 leads to 2 fucosyltransferase) and the A enzyme (alpha 1 leads to 3 N-

Cytokine Gene Polymorphisms Modulate Isohemagglutinin Titers and Classes: Another Aspect Towards the Link Between ABO Groups and Human Pathologies?

Anti-A and anti-B antibodies are essential for monitoring adverse reactions in organ transplants and transfusions. However, their importance is also growing due to their involvement in the pathophysiology of various human diseases, such as infections, although this is currently the subject of heated debate. A characteristic heterogeneity in the titers and classes of anti-A and anti-B antibodies is observed among individuals. Several factors appear to be responsible, such as everyone's specific immune profile, age, sex, microbiota composition, lifestyle, and health status. The immune profile, t

ABO Blood Group Genotypes and Demographic Traits in Susceptibility to Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria.

Studies have shown that ABO blood groups and demographic traits influence susceptibility to type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and can be used in combination with insulin therapy to reduce the disease's burden. However, geographical variations exist in the influence of demographic traits and ABO blood groups on susceptibility to diseases and thus require establishing it in every locality. This study determined the influence of demographic traits and ABO blood groups on the prevalence of T1DM in Lagos, Nigeria. A structured checklist was used to collect data from the health records of non-obese 15

Hemolysis in Early Infancy: Still a Cause of Cholestatic Neonatal Giant Cell Hepatitis.

Before the prophylactic use of anti-D antibodies in pregnancy, hemolytic anemia of the newborn was the most common cause of hyperbilirubinemia. Nowadays, given the rarity of hemolytic anemia of the newborn, hepatobiliary abnormalities, perinatal infections, and metabolic disorders have become the most common conditions in the differential diagnosis of neonatal cholestasis. Here, we report 3 instances of cholestatic giant cell hepatitis in 3 infants who had Coombs' positive hemolysis due to ABO incompatibility in 1, Rh incompatibility in another, and combined ABO and Rh incompatibility in the t

Blood group O: A novel risk factor for increased postpartum blood loss?

INTRODUCTION: Blood group O is known to be associated with lower levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and with increased bleeding complications. The influence of blood group O on postpartum blood loss was assessed by a few studies, however, without adjustment for important obstetric risk factors for postpartum blood loss. AIM: Aim of this study was to investigate whether women with blood group O exhibit increased blood loss after delivery in consideration of established risk factors for postpartum bleeding. METHODS: A total of 1487 patients were prospectively included into this cohort study

Is blood type really a risk factor for epistaxis?

UNLABELLED: Is blood type really a riskfactorfor epistaxis? OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between ABO blood type and epistaxis. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 359 patients with idiopathic epistaxis. Patients with risk factors for bleeding, including anticoagulant use, thrombocytopenia, hypertension, liver diseases, elevated bleeding time, low coagulation factor levels, or any benign/malignant tumor, were excluded from the study. Thus, only patients with idiopathic epistaxis were included in this study. For the control group, blood-type information was retrieved from th

Effects of blood type and blood handling on feeding success, longevity and egg production in the body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus.

The effects of feeding different types of human blood to human body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus L. (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), on feeding success, longevity and numbers of eggs laid were investigated using an artificial blood-feeding system in the laboratory. No significant differences were found between lice fed on different human blood types for any of the parameters tested. However, when lice were fed on human blood of one blood type followed immediately by a different blood type, they took significantly smaller bloodmeals, their longevity was reduced and they laid fewer eggs per femal
