OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated pathways to low energy availability in a sample of female adolescent athletes (n = 464).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS: Participants (age 13-18 y) underwent assessments for height, weight, eating attitudes and behaviors, and menstrual function. Bone mineral density and body composition were evaluated by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in a subset of participants (n = 209). Athletes were classified with clinical indicators of low energy availability if they met criteria for 1) primary or secondary amenorrhea or 2) clinical underweight status (body mass ind

UNLABELLED: The trabecular and cortical bone assessed by bone strain index seems not to be significantly affected in NHPT.
INTRODUCTION: The natural history and bone involvement of normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism (NHPT) are not fully clarified yet. The bone strain index (BSI) is a deformation index based on the finite element method and can be applied to DXA scans. In this study, we aim to assess BSI in subjects with NHPT.
METHOD: A case-control study included 170 subjects: 40 subjects with NHPT, 50 subjects with primary hypercalcemic hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), and 80 controls (age- and s

Although suboptimal bone health has been reported in children and adolescents with low motor competence (LMC), it is not known whether such deficits are present at the time of peak bone mass. We examined the impact of LMC on bone mineral density (BMD) in 1043 participants (484 females) from the Raine Cohort Study. Participants had motor competence assessed using the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development at 10, 14, and 17 years, and a whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan at 20 years. Bone loading from physical activity was estimated from the International Physical A

PURPOSE: To investigate associations between body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and components of sarcopenia (muscle mass and muscle strength/power), with bone microarchitecture measured by high-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in older adults with obesity.
METHODS: Seventy-four adults aged ≥ 55 years with body fat percentage ≥ 30 % (men) or ≥40 % (women) were included. Fat mass, lean mass and total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) was calculated as

Initial definitions of sarcopenia included the age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass that was presumed to be associated with late-life reduced functional capacity, disability and loss of independence. Because no method for determination of muscle mass was available for large cohort studies of aging men and women, lean body mass determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectrical impedance was used as a surrogate measure of muscle mass. The data from these studies showed either no or a poor relationship between LBM and functional capacity and health related outcomes, leading to the c

Recently, promising results have been reported for detection of osteoporosis with use of an aluminum phantom. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of radiography-based bone mineral density (BMD) measurement using a graded aluminum phantom. This study included 27 postmenopausal women with a distal radius fracture. Aluminum phantom radiography of the healthy radius was conducted as well as high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) measurement of the ultradistal radius and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the radius, spine, and hip.

BACKGROUND: Although Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most frequent sex-hormone disorder, there is ongoing uncertainty about the often associated sex-hormone deficiency, its impact on common comorbidities, and therefore about prevention and treatment. In this study, we focus on bone loss, reported to occur in over 40% of KS patients, and the impact of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) on this comorbidity.
OBJECTIVES: This single-center retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital compared the effect of treatment with TRT to no TRT on evolution of bone mineral density (BMD) in KS pat

PURPOSE: Bone is one of the main targets of hormones and endocrine diseases are frequent causes of secondary osteoporosis and fractures in real-world clinical practice. However, diagnosis of skeletal fragility and prediction of fractures in this setting could be a challenge, since the skeletal alterations induced by endocrine disorders are not generally captured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement of bone mineral density (BMD), that is the gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis in the general population. The aim of this paper is to review the existing evidence related to

INTRODUCTION: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is associated with osteoporosis and fractures. Etelcalcetide is an intravenous calcimimetic for the control of hyperparathyroidism in patients on hemodialysis. Effects of etelcalcetide on the skeleton are unknown.
METHODS: In a single-arm, open-label, 36-week prospective trial, we hypothesized that etelcalcetide improves bone quality and strength without damaging bone-tissue quality. Participants were 18 years or older, on hemodialysis ≥1 year, without calcimimetic exposure within 12 weeks of enrollment. We measured pretreatment and post-treatment a

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with normal or slightly elevated bone mineral density (BMD) but paradoxically increased fracture risk. Although multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain this observation, one thing is clear from prior studies, T2DM is associated with poor bone quality rather than a defect in bone quantity. The objective of our study is to evaluate the effect of longitudinal glycemic control on bone quality and bone turnover in men with T2DM.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of baseline data from 169 male participants, aged 35-65 in 3 c

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients have a high risk of osteoporotic fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of trabecular bone score (TBS) in assessing fracture risk in patients with AS. 67 patients meeting the ASAS classification criteria were enrolled in the study. Fracture risk for each patient was assessed based on a lumbar spine exam encompassing bone mineral density (BMD), and TBS through a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) exam. In addition, each patient had an X-ray taken of their lumbar and thoracic spine to determine the presence of syndesmophytes and b

UNLABELLED: This study revealed that serum uric acid (sUA) levels were not associated with bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men, even adjusting for confounding variables. Nevertheless, a positive association was only found between sUA levels and BMD at all skeletal sites in the normal BMI group.
INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported an association between serum uric acid (sUA) levels and bone mineral density (BMD). However, their findings are controversial and limited to adult men in the general population. This study was aimed at examin

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to determine whether lumbar areal bone mineral density differed between cricket fast bowlers with and without lumbar stress fracture, and whether bone mineral density trajectories differed between groups during rehabilitation.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional and cohort.
METHODS: 29 elite male fast bowlers received a post-season anteroposterior lumbar dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan and a lumbar magnetic resonance imaging scan to determine stress fracture status. Participants were invited for three additional scans across the 59 weeks post baseline or dia

PURPOSE: Pelvic irradiation leads to substantial dose to the pelvic girdle. However, bone density loss as a function of radiation therapy dose and time has not been investigated. This study was undertaken to evaluate such a dose-response relationship.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Women undergoing pelvic radiation therapy for cervix cancer within a phase 3 trial were included. The study necessitated 2 computed tomography imaging sets acquired at least 12 months apart in patients with no evidence of relapse. All images were transferred to the treatment planning system to determine radiation dose and

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VD) has been classically associated with calcium homeostasis and bone mineral density since it has a key role on mineralization and resorption. Immunomodulatory effects have been attributable to VD; low concentrations of VD have been associated with elevation of inflammatory markers. Inflammatory autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurodegenerative suffering, whose etiology is still unknown, is directly related to an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 17 and interleukin 1β who play an important role in this physiopatho

BACKGROUND: A low-glycemic index (GI) diet may modulate adipocyte-produced adipokines linking to insulin resistance.
METHODS: The stored plasma samples from the RCT of a low-GI vs. conventional diet in obese children were analyzed for adipokines: leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin. Their relationships with clinical outcomes were assessed.
RESULTS: Fifty-two participants completed the 6-month intervention trial (mean age: 12.0 ± 2.0 years, 35 boys). Both groups had significantly decreased BMI z-scores from baseline whereas the low-GI group had significant reduction in fasting insulin

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We aimed to explore the relationship between total BMD and prevalent fractures and the risk of CVD in a female population in the United States (US).
METHODS AND RESULTS: We undertook cross-sectional analyses of a female population participating in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline curves were used to examine the association between total BMD and CVD. Subgroup analyses were also undertaken. A total of 13,707 women were enrolled. The restricted cubic spline curve revealed a linear and negat

INTRODUCTION: Body composition is critical for the evaluation of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and can be obtained from either multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA). Although the discrepancy between the results obtained from both methods has already been described, reasons are unknown, and might be related to secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is associated with bone loss.
METHODS: We have evaluated 49 patients (25 males and 24 females): 20 with CKD not on dialysis and 29 on maintenance hemodialysis [18 with severe hyperparath
