Individual-specific strategies inform category learning.

Categorization is an essential task for sensory perception. Individuals learn category labels using a variety of strategies to ensure that sensory signals, such as sounds or images, can be assigned to proper categories. Categories are often learned on the basis of extreme examples, and the boundary between categories can differ among individuals. The trajectories for learning also differ among individuals, as different individuals rely on different strategies, such as repeating or alternating choices. However, little is understood about the relationship between individual learning trajectories

Predictors for estimating subcortical EEG responses to continuous speech.

Perception of sounds and speech involves structures in the auditory brainstem that rapidly process ongoing auditory stimuli. The role of these structures in speech processing can be investigated by measuring their electrical activity using scalp-mounted electrodes. However, typical analysis methods involve averaging neural responses to many short repetitive stimuli that bear little relevance to daily listening environments. Recently, subcortical responses to more ecologically relevant continuous speech were detected using linear encoding models. These methods estimate the temporal response fun

Variable Cadence Gait Training Outcomes Using Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation Embedded in Older Adults' Preferred Music.

Older adults must have the ability to walk at variable speeds/distances to meet community demands. This single group pre-post test study's purposes were to examine if actual cadences after 7 weeks of rhythmic auditory stimulation gait training matched target cadences, improved walking distance, duration, velocity, maximum cadence, balance, enjoyment, and/or changed spatial/temporal gait parameters. Fourteen female adults (72.6 ± 4.4 years) participated in 14 sessions, while variable cadences were progressively introduced. Eleven older adult responders walked faster (3.8 steps/min) than one tar

Delirium is associated with loss of feedback cortical connectivity.

INTRODUCTION: Post-operative delirium (POD) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality but is bereft of treatments, largely due to our limited understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. We hypothesized that delirium reflects a disturbance in cortical connectivity that leads to altered predictions of the sensory environment. METHODS: High-density electroencephalogram recordings during an oddball auditory roving paradigm were collected from 131 patients. Dynamic causal modeling (DCM) analysis facilitated inference about the neuronal connectivity and inhibition-excitation dynamic

Explicit processing of melodic structure in congenital amusia can be improved by redescription-associate learning.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of musical processing. Previous research demonstrates that although explicit musical processing is impaired in congenital amusia, implicit musical processing can be intact. However, little is known about whether implicit knowledge could improve explicit musical processing in individuals with congenital amusia. To this end, we developed a training method utilizing redescription-associate learning, aiming at transferring implicit representations of perceptual states into explicit forms through verbal description and then establishing the associa

Multilevel Modeling of Gaze From Listeners With Hearing Loss Following a Realistic Conversation.

PURPOSE: There is a need for tools to study real-world communication abilities in people with hearing loss. We outline a potential method for this that analyzes gaze and use it to answer the question of when and how much listeners with hearing loss look toward a new talker in a conversation. METHOD: Twenty-two older adults with hearing loss followed a prerecorded two-person audiovisual conversation in the presence of babble noise. We compared their eye-gaze direction to the conversation in two multilevel logistic regression (MLR) analyses. First, we split the conversation into events classifi

Middle ear muscle and medial olivocochlear activity inferred from individual human ears via cochlear potentials.

The peripheral auditory system is influenced by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) and middle ear muscle (MEM) reflexes. When elicited by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS), these reflexes reduce cochlear amplification (MOC reflex) and limit low-frequency transmission through the middle ear (MEM reflex). The independent roles of these reflexes on auditory physiology and perception are difficult to distinguish. The amplitude of the cochlear microphonic (CM) is expected to increase or decrease when the MOC and MEM reflexes are elicited by CAS, respectively, which could lead to a straightforwar…

Reduced neural feedback signaling despite robust neuron and gamma auditory responses during human sleep.

During sleep, sensory stimuli rarely trigger a behavioral response or conscious perception. However, it remains unclear whether sleep inhibits specific aspects of sensory processing, such as feedforward or feedback signaling. Here, we presented auditory stimuli (for example, click-trains, words, music) during wakefulness and sleep in patients with epilepsy, while recording neuronal spiking, microwire local field potentials, intracranial electroencephalogram and polysomnography. Auditory stimuli induced robust and selective spiking and high-gamma (80-200 Hz) power responses across the lateral t

Systematic review: auditory stimulation and sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Auditory stimulation devices (white and pink noise) are used to mask sounds and facilitate relaxation and sleep; however, the effectiveness of this intervention is not well established. This systematic review examined the scientific literature for the effect of specific types of auditory stimulation on sleep outcomes in adults. METHODS: The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement guided this review. Searches were conducted in 9 databases for intervention studies that could easily be employed in clinical practice. We excluded othe

Who uses digital drugs? An international survey of 'binaural beat' consumers.

INTRODUCTION: Digital drugs, or binaural beats claimed to elicit specific cognitive or emotional states, are a phenomenon about which little is known. In this brief report, we describe demographic and drug use correlates of binaural beat use, patterns of use, reasons for use and methods of access. METHODS: The Global Drug Survey 2021 was translated into 11 languages; 30 896 responses were gathered from 22 countries. RESULTS: The use of binaural beats to experience altered states was reported by 5.3% of the sample (median age 27; 60.5% male), with the highest rates from the United States, Mex

The effect of broadband elicitor laterality on psychoacoustic gain reduction across signal frequency.

There are psychoacoustic methods thought to measure gain reduction, which may be from the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a bilateral feedback loop that adjusts cochlear gain. Although studies have used ipsilateral and contralateral elicitors and have examined strength at different signal frequencies, these factors have not been examined within a single study. Therefore, basic questions about gain reduction, such as the relative strength of ipsilateral vs contralateral elicitation and the relative strength across signal frequency, are not known. In the current study, gain reduction from ip

Supra-normal skills in processing of visuo-auditory prosodic information by cochlear-implanted deaf patients.

Cochlear implanted (CI) adults with acquired deafness are known to depend on multisensory integration skills (MSI) for speech comprehension through the fusion of speech reading skills and their deficient auditory perception. But, little is known on how CI patients perceive prosodic information relating to speech content. Our study aimed to identify how CI patients use MSI between visual and auditory information to process paralinguistic prosodic information of multimodal speech and the visual strategies employed. A psychophysics assessment was developed, in which CI patients and hearing contro

Towards a unification of treatments and interventions for tinnitus patients: The EU research and innovation action UNITI.

Tinnitus is the perception of a phantom sound and the patient's reaction to it. Although much progress has been made, tinnitus remains a scientific and clinical enigma of high prevalence and high economic burden, with an estimated prevalence of 10%-20% among the adult population. The EU is funding a new collaborative project entitled "Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus Patients" (UNITI, grant no. 848261) under its Horizon 2020 framework. The main goal of the UNITI project is to set the ground for a predictive computational model based on existing and longitudinal data att

Pharmacologic treatments in preclinical tinnitus models with special focus on Ginkgo biloba leaf extract EGb 761®.

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the absence of external acoustic stimuli. Frequent comorbidities or associated factors are depression, anxiety, concentration problems, insomnia, resignation, helplessness, headache, bruxism, or social isolation, just to name a few. Although many therapeutic approaches have already been tested with varying success, there still is no cure available for tinnitus. The search for an effective treatment has been hampered by the fact that the mechanisms of tinnitus development are still not fully understood, although several models are available and

Human Frequency Following Responses to Filtered Speech.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing interest in using the frequency following response (FFR) to describe the effects of varying different aspects of hearing aid signal processing on brainstem neural representation of speech. To this end, recent studies have examined the effects of filtering on brainstem neural representation of the speech fundamental frequency (f0) in listeners with normal hearing sensitivity by measuring FFRs to low- and high-pass filtered signals. However, the stimuli used in these studies do not reflect the entire range of typical cutoff frequencies used in frequency-specific g

A distributed frontotemporal network underlies gamma-band synchronization impairments in schizophrenia patients.

Synaptic interactions between parvalbumin-positive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic interneurons and pyramidal neurons evoke cortical gamma oscillations, which are known to be abnormal in schizophrenia. These cortical gamma oscillations can be indexed by the gamma-band auditory steady-state response (ASSR), a robust electroencephalographic (EEG) biomarker that is increasingly used to advance the development of novel therapeutics for schizophrenia, and other related brain disorders. Despite promise of ASSR, the neural substrates of ASSR have not yet been characterized. This study investigated t
