The acoustic reflex threshold and its pattern in response to stimuli of different intensities, were investigated by means of the signal-averaging technique in 20 normal, 20 sensorineural-impaired and 10 successfully stapedectomized ears. Trains of tone bursts between 110 and 0 dB HL were used. The frequencies tested were 500, 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000 Hz. The potential usefulness of impedance studies is reviewed and a case of osteogenesis imperfecta, having bilateral ossicular discontinuity and intact acoustic reflexes, is presented. The structures of the cerebellopontine angle in neurinoma of the auditory nerve were studied in autopsy material and during surgical intervention with the use of an operative microscope. Principally different variants of the relationships between the cerebellopontine angle structures and the neurinoma capsule in intra- and extracisternal localization of the tumor were revealed. Acoustic reflex impedance measurements are made on forty-seven normal and two otosclerotic ears using fixed probe frequencies from 220 to 2000 Hz. In general, the reflex increases the middle ear impedance up to 700 Hz probe frequency and decreases it thereafter. Obtaining a hermetic seal in the external auditory canal is often a major obstacle in impedance audiometry. In the present study, the acoustic reflex threshold was determined for three groups of subjects, first with and then without a pressure-tight seal. It was found that for subjects with normal hearing or sensorineural hearing loss and normal tympanograms, 96% of the measurements obtained without a pressure seal were within 5 dB of those obtained with a seal. The results of the employment of radiopharmaceuticals in a group of patients with acoustic neurinomas for diagnostic purposes are described. High diagnostic efficacy of the method of radioisotope encephaloscintigraphy is emphasized, the method permitting to obtain extended diagnostic information. An important advantage of the method consists in its safety and absence of contraindicaions.

Clinical acoustic impedance findings in a group of 40 children with cleft lip or palate and a group of 20 noncleft children are presented. The cleft subjects exhibited a high incidence of hearing loss and aural pathology. The data suggest that impedance measurements lend pertinent supportive information to routine puretone audiometric testing in the detection and management of middle-ear disease in the cleft-palate population.

The audiological findings in 125 patients with surgically confirmed acoustic neuromas are presented. Following the classification by Pulec et al.
