Cancer remains a major cause of global mortality, while late-stage diagnosis and therapeutic resistance highlight the need for individualized strategies. Nanotheranostics has emerged as a promising paradigm by integrating cancer diagnosis and treatment within multifunctional nanosystems. However, most current approaches remain technology-driven rather than truly patient-specific. This review examines the emerging convergence of adaptive nanotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), molecular profiling, and precision medicine to develop intelligent nanoplatforms capable of responding to individ

High-throughput, next-generation sequencing (NGS) offers a unique opportunity for in-depth characterization of adaptive immune receptor repertoires. Nevertheless, limitations and pitfalls exist in every step of both the experimental and the analytical procedure, leading to discrepancies in the literature and incomprehensive and/or altogether misleading results. Thus, standardization of protocols in NGS immunogenetics is urgently needed. Here, we describe the experimental protocol that we developed for T-cell receptor beta chain (TRB) gene repertoire analysis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, aim

The morphologic study of 22 sucking and weaned lambs (8 experimentally and 14 spontaneously infected with Trichocephalus) revealed that in its biologic development in the host Trichocephalus fixes itself firmly and penetrates deeply at its head and into the mucous membrane of the caecum and the large intestine. Besides, at these sites morphologic lesions in cases of strong infection have been established in the liver, kidneys, spleen, and lung. The desquamated epithelial cells and the erythrocytes found in the digestive canal of the parasite showed that sheep Trichocephalus sp. are hematophage

Land-use change is predicted to act as a driver of zoonotic disease emergence through human exposure to novel microbial diversity, but evidence for the effects of environmental change on microbial communities in vertebrates is lacking. We sample wild birds at 99 wildlife-livestock-human interfaces across Nairobi, Kenya, and use whole genome sequencing to characterise bacterial genes known to be carried on mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within avian-borne Escherichia coli (n = 241). By modelling the diversity of bacterial genes encoding virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) against ecolo

The discussion over the roles of genes and environment on the phenotypical specification of organisms has held a central role in science philosophy since the late 19(th) century and has re-emerged in today's debate over genetic determinism and developmental plasticity. In fin-de-siecle Vienna, this debate coincided with a philosophical debate over empiricism/materialism versus idealism/vitalism. Turn-of-the-century Vienna's highly interdisciplinary environment was also the birthplace for the model system of the un-opposed molar. The un-opposed molar system features new tissue formation at the

Chest wall reconstruction after oncologic resection or for congenital defects such as Poland syndrome poses significant technical challenges. Available reconstructive options present distinct limitations: synthetic meshes provide immediate mechanical support but are biologically inert, rigid prostheses carry higher infection risk and limited adaptability, and biologic matrices may lack early structural rigidity. Here, we describe a hybrid reconstruction technique that combines a double-layer Marlex® mesh (Davol Inc., Cranston, RI, USA) with a Vitagraft® bioactive scaffold (DMC Equipamentos, Sã

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is a multifactorial, chronic, and relapsing non-communicable disease characterized by excessive adipose tissue accumulation and metabolic dysfunction. Increasing evidence indicates that biological sex influences not only the development and distribution of adipose tissue but also responses to obesity treatments, including metabolic-bariatric surgery. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on sex-related differences in metabolic outcomes after bariatric surgery.
RECENT FINDINGS: Bariatric surgery induces substantial weight loss and marked improvement of o

Sex as a biological variable plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of specific diseases and can have a potential impact on the response to therapies and disease outcomes. Sex-specific differences have been reported in prematurity-related outcomes, suggesting that preterm infants exhibit differences in biological predisposition or resilience to disease. Furthermore, striking differences in response to common neonatal therapies such as antenatal and postnatal steroids, indomethacin, and other nonpharmacologic agents raise the critical need to assess therapeutic responses stratified by bio

Biological monitoring, also called biomonitoring, is a process to prevent and assess health risk for individuals exposed to chemical products present in environment or through workplace exposure. Biomonitoring is most often a monitoring of exposure or of effect. The exposure monitoring is currently the most widespread in toxicology. It involves the determination in biological fluids of different biomarkers, most of which are biomarkers of internal dose. These biological indicators are typically measured in blood and urine, but other biological samples can be analyzed. They are used to assess t

Arboviruses are emerging/reemerging infectious agents worldwide. The factors within this scenario include vector and host population fluctuations, climatic changes, anthropogenic activities that disturb ecosystems, an increase in international flights, human mobility, and genetic mutations that allow spill-over phenomenon. Arboviruses are maintained by biologic transmission among vectors and hosts. Sometimes this biological transmission is specific and includes one vector and host species such as Chikungunya (CHIKV), Dengue (DENV), and urban Yellow Fever (YFV). However, most of the arboviruses

While surgery is the treatment of choice for thymomas, complete excision is not possible in a significant proportion of cases. For these patients, radiotherapy can be used as neoadjunctive, post-operative adjunctive or sole therapy. During radiotherapy, rapid biological clearance of tumour cells is often observed, requiring adaptation of the treatment plan. Adaptive radiation therapy (RT) is a dynamic process, whereby the treatment plan is altered throughout the treatment course due to changes in morphologic, functional or positioning changes. With the hypothesis, that individually adapted rep

Proline is an important biomarker in biological regulation and plant stress adaptation, increasing the demand for highly specific analytical detection methods. Herein, we report the use of DMAC as a chemodosimetric probe that exclusively identifies proline in the presence of 19 competing amino acids. The sensing mechanism relies on an irreversible chemical reaction between proline and DMAC, producing a distinct optical response with negligible background interference. This exhibits a highly sensitive limit of detection of 15.8 nM (1.82 ppb), signifying its importance in trace-level quantificat

Mandibular asymmetry is a facial deformity that affects both function and appearance. It may result from developmental disturbances, trauma, or temporomandibular joint pathology. Distraction osteogenesis (DO) offers a biological method for gradual bone elongation along with simultaneous adaptation of surrounding soft tissues. Genioplasty further refines chin position and facial balance. This report describes the management of a young adult patient presenting with facial asymmetry due to unilateral mandibular hypoplasia. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed reduced ramal height on the

Photosynthesis is essential for ecosystem survival, but while plants require light, excessive exposure can damage cells. Chloroplasts, photosynthetic organelles, respond via self-organized motion within cells to optimize light absorption. These disk-shaped organelles must balance two competing needs: dense packing to enhance absorption under dim light and rapid spatial rearrangement to avoid damage from excess light. Using microscopy, we show that plant cell shape and chloroplast size achieve both goals: dense monolayer packing for optimal absorption in low light and sidewall packing for light

There is unprecedented spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 viruses in bird species on five continents, and many reports of infections in mammals most likely resulting from consumption of infected birds. As H5N1 viruses infect more species, their geographical range increases and more viral variants are produced that could have new biological properties including adaptation to mammals and potentially to humans. This highlights the need to continually monitor and assess mammalian-origin H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses for the presence of mutations that could potentially increase their

Defined as congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomic sex is atypical, differences or disorders of sex development (DSDs) comprise many discrete diagnoses ranging from those associated with few phenotypic differences between affected and unaffected individuals to those where questions arise regarding gender of rearing, gonadal tumor risk, genital surgery, and fertility. Controversies exist in numerous areas including how DSDs are conceptualized, how to refer to the set of conditions and those affected by them, and aspects of clinical management that extend

Wuchereria bancrofti is found throughout tropics and subtropics like Asia, Pacific islands, Africa, areas of South America and Caribbean basin. In all these areas, except Pacific islands, microfilaria occurs in the periodic form, in which case the microfilaria are found in large numbers in the peripheral blood during night. In the Pacific islands, they occur in the subperiodic form, i.e., microfilaria are present in the peripheral blood at all times and reach the maximum level of parasitemia in the afternoon. Microfilaria of Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi occurring in India displays a

Models of adaptive bet-hedging commonly adopt insights from Kelly's famous work on optimal gambling strategies and the financial value of information. In particular, such models seek evolutionary solutions that maximize long-term average growth rate of lineages, even in the face of highly stochastic growth trajectories. Here, we argue for extensive departures from the standard approach to better account for evolutionary contingencies. Crucially, we incorporate considerations of volatility minimization, motivated by interim extinction risk in finite populations, within a finite time horizon app

Water is vital for many biological processes and is essential for all living organisms. However, numerous macroorganisms and microorganisms have adapted to survive in environments in which water is scarce; such organisms are collectively termed xerotolerant. With increasing global desertification due to climate change and human-driven desertification processes, it is becoming ever more important to understand how xerotolerant organisms cope with a lack of water. In this Review, we discuss the environmental, physiological and molecular adaptations that enable xerotolerant bacteria to survive in

The late Cenozoic period saw widespread diversification of grazing hoofed mammals characterized by high-crowned molar teeth with low, thinly enameled crests. However, Australia's dominant grazing herbivores, the kangaroos, have much lower-crowned and higher-relief molars that are more akin to some "archaic" placental herbivores. Using x-ray microcomputed tomography scanning, we show that as kangaroos shifted to higher-abrasion grazing diets, their ancestrally vertical, interlocking mode of occlusion favored the acquisition of thick enamel as a durability adaptation. Extant grass-feeding kangar
