How will mosquitoes adapt to climate warming?

The potential for adaptive evolution to enable species persistence under a changing climate is one of the most important questions for understanding impacts of future climate change. Climate adaptation may be particularly likely for short-lived ectotherms, including many pest, pathogen, and vector species. For these taxa, estimating climate adaptive potential is critical for accurate predictive modeling and public health preparedness. Here, we demonstrate how a simple theoretical framework used in conservation biology-evolutionary rescue models-can be used to investigate the potential for clim

Saccadic adaptation shapes perceived size: Common codes for action and perception.

Recent findings suggest that perceptual and motor systems share common codes; for instance, perceived object location is known to correlate with motor changes in the oculomotor system. Here, we investigate whether modifying saccade amplitude affects object size perception. Participants saw in peripheral vision a test disk that could vary in size across trials. This disk was then replaced by a small target cross, which was the signal to make a saccade. After the saccade, the target cross was extinguished and replaced by a reference disk (thus seen in foveal vision). Participants had to compare

Distinct patterns of pigment development underlie convergent hyperpigmentation between nocturnal and diurnal geckos (Squamata: Gekkota).

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary transitions in temporal niche necessitates specialized morphology, physiology, and behaviors. Diurnal, heliothermic squamates (lizards and snakes) that bask require protection from ultraviolet radiation (UV) that can damage internal organs such as the brain, viscera, and gonads. Many smaller squamates have accomplished this protection by hyperpigmentation of the peritoneum and subcutaneous dorsum. Typically, nocturnal species do not require these protections from ultraviolet light. However, some nocturnal species that exhibit extreme crypsis may be exposed to sunlight

Prisms adaptation improves haptic object discrimination in hemispatial neglect.

Neglect manifestations are typically explored in the visual modality. Although they are less commonly investigated tactile deficits also exist, and the aim of this study was to explore neglect in this modality. A haptic object discrimination task was designed to assess whether or not shape perception is impaired in seven right brain damaged patients with or without neglect. Each patient's performance on the object discrimination task was assessed before and after a brief period of prism adaptation, a bottom-up rehabilitation technique known to improve neglect symptoms. The results suggest that

Mangrove Fishes Rely on Emersion Behavior and Physiological Tolerance to Persist in Sulfidic Environments.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a potent respiratory toxin that makes sulfidic environments tolerable to only a few organisms. We report the presence of fishes ( Kryptolebias marmoratus , Poecilia orri , Gambusia sp., and Dormitator maculatus ) in Belizean mangrove pools with extremely high H 2 S concentrations (up to 1,166 μM) that would be lethal for most fishes. Thus, we asked whether the three most prevalent species ( Kryptolebias , Poecilia , and Gambusia ) persist in sulfidic pools because they are exceptionally H 2 S tolerant and/or because they can leave water (emerse) and completely avoid

Isometric training and long-term adaptations: Effects of muscle length, intensity, and intent: A systematic review.

Isometric training is used in the rehabilitation and physical preparation of athletes, special populations, and the general public. However, little consensus exists regarding training guidelines for a variety of desired outcomes. Understanding the adaptive response to specific loading parameters would be of benefit to practitioners. The objective of this systematic review, therefore, was to detail the medium- to long-term adaptations of different types of isometric training on morphological, neurological, and performance variables. Exploration of the relevant subject matter was performed throu

Ontogenetic and temperature-dependent changes in tolerance to hypoxia and hydrogen sulfide during the early life stages of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum.

Wind-induced upwelling of hypoxic waters containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sometimes causes mass mortalities of aquatic organisms inhabiting coastal areas, including the hypoxia-tolerant Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. We examined the tolerance of Manila clam to H2S under controlled laboratory conditions. Larvae and juveniles obtained by artificial fertilization or from a wild population were exposed to normoxic or to hypoxic water with or without un-ionized H2S (concentrations, 0.2-52.2 mg/L). Twenty-four-hour exposure experiments revealed ontogenetic changes in the clam's tolerance to H

Pathophysiology, adaptation, and imaging of the right ventricle in Fontan circulation.

The Fontan procedure, which creates a total cavopulmonary anastomosis and represents the final stage of palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, generates a unique circulation relying on a functionally single right ventricle (RV). The RV pumps blood in series around the systemic and pulmonary circulation, which requires adaptations to the abnormal volume and pressure loads. Here, we provide a complete review of RV adaptations as the RV assumes the role of the systemic ventricle, the progression of RV dysfunction to a distinct pattern of heart failure unique to this disease process, and

Impact of pregnancy on inborn errors of metabolism.

Once based mainly in paediatrics, inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), or inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) represent a growing adult medicine specialty. Individually rare these conditions have currently, a collective estimated prevalence of >1:800. Diagnosis has improved through expanded newborn screening programs, identification of potentially affected family members and greater awareness of symptomatic presentations in adolescence and in adulthood. Better survival and reduced mortality from previously lethal and debilitating conditions means greater numbers transition to adulthood. Pregnanc

Adaptation of small mammals to radiocontaminated environment: Oxidative metabolism and radioresistance.

Differences in radioresistance and oxidative metabolism parameters in rodents of different ecological specialization in the East Ural radioactive trace (EURT) area are shown. Northern mole voles (radiosensitive species) exhibit a pronounced resistance to chronic exposure to radiation, living in a series of generations in a radioactive environment, whereas pigmy wood mice (radioresistant species) are less resistant in the EURT area due to their migration activity. Thus, under the EURT area conditions, northern mole voles realize the genotypic radioadaptation, whereas pigmy wood mice realize the

Synchronisms between bud and cambium phenology in black spruce: early-flushing provenances exhibit early xylem formation.

Bud and cambial phenology represent the adaptation of species to the local environment that allows the growing season to be maximized while minimizing the risk of frost for the developing tissues. The temporal relationship between the apical and radial meristems can help in the understanding of tree growth as a whole process. The aim of this study was to compare cambial phenology in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) provenances classified as early and late bud flushing. The different phases of cambial phenology were assessed on wood microcores sampled weekly from April to October in

Separation anxiety: at the neurobiological crossroads of adaptation and illness.

Physiological and adaptive separation anxiety (SA) is intimately connected with the evolutionary emergence of new brain structures specific of paleomammalians, the growth of neomammalian--and later hominid--brain and skull size, and the appearance of bipedalism. All these evolutionary milestones have contributed to expanding the behavioral repertoire and plasticity of prehuman and human beings, at the cost of more prolonged dependency of the infant and of the child on parental care. Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) can be seen as an exaggerated/inappropriate manifestation of SA that constitut

Expansion of host cellular niche can drive adaptation of a zoonotic malaria parasite to humans.

The macaque malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi has recently emerged as an important zoonosis in Southeast Asia. Infections are typically mild but can cause severe disease, achieving parasite densities similar to fatal Plasmodium falciparum infections. Here we show that a primate-adapted P. knowlesi parasite proliferates poorly in human blood due to a strong preference for young red blood cells (RBCs). We establish a continuous in vitro culture system by using human blood enriched for young cells. Mathematical modelling predicts that parasite adaptation for invasion of older RBCs is a likely

Respiratory chain senescence and its relation to physical activity.

This article is a scientific review on the effects of senescence of the respiratory chain and it aims to provide an overview of what role exercise has on the way the aging of the respiratory chain occurs. There are several reasons that explain the lack of exercise in senescent, less need, less interest, different goals, and also deficiencies that make these decisions strongest, as mild equilibrium, coordination, strength, or vision abnormalities. The use of the whole respiratory chain from the mithocondria to the the lungs, its solicitation through exercise and a proper nutrition are basic to

A critical review on fungi mediated plant responses with special emphasis to Piriformospora indica on improved production and protection of crops.

The beneficial fungi are potentially useful in agriculture sector to avail several services to crop plants such as water status, nutrient enrichment, stress tolerance, protection, weed control and bio-control. Natural agro-ecosystem relies on fungi because of it takes part in soil organic matter decomposition, nutrient acquisition, organic matter recycling, nutrient recycling, antagonism against plant pests, and crop management. The crucial role of fungi in normalizing the toxic effects of phenols, HCN and ROS by β-CAS, ACC demainase and antioxidant enzymes in plants is well documented. Fungi

[Cardiovascular diseases during pregnancy and delivery].

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the current obstetric practice. PHYSIOLOGICALLY ADAPTED MECHANISMS OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM IN PREGNANCY: It is normal that during pregnancy some physiological adaptive changes of the cardiovascular system occur and they may contribute to the deterioration of the clinical cardiac status of a patient with preexisting or acquired cardiovascular disease. The most prominent adaptive mechanisms include the increase of circulating blood volume, decrease of peripheral vascular resistance a

Kandelia obovata (S., L.) Yong tolerance mechanisms to Cadmium: subcellular distribution, chemical forms and thiol pools.

In order to explore the detoxification mechanisms adopted by mangrove under cadmium (Cd) stress, we investigated the subcellular distribution and chemical forms of Cd, in addition to the change of the thiol pools in Kandelia obovata (S., L.) Yong, which were cultivated in sandy culture medium treated with sequential Cd solution. We found that Cd addition caused a proportional increase of Cd in the organs of K. obovata. The investigation of subcellular distribution verified that most of the Cd was localized in the cell wall, and the lowest was in the membrane. Results showed sodium chloride and

High potential for formation and persistence of chimeras following aggregated larval settlement in the broadcast spawning coral, Acropora millepora.

In sessile modular marine invertebrates, chimeras can originate from fusions of closely settling larvae or of colonies that come into contact through growth or movement. While it has been shown that juveniles of brooding corals fuse under experimental conditions, chimera formation in broadcast spawning corals, the most abundant group of reef corals, has not been examined. This study explores the capacity of the broadcast spawning coral Acropora millepora to form chimeras under experimental conditions and to persist as chimeras in the field. Under experimental conditions, 1.5-fold more larvae s

Metabolic adaptation of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 to cyanide: role of malate-quinone oxidoreductases, aconitase and fumarase isoenzymes.

In general, the biodegradation of a toxic compound by a micro-organism requires the concurrence of, at least, two features in the biological system: first, the capability of the micro-organism to metabolize the toxic compound, and secondly, the capacity to resist its toxic effect. Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 is a bacterium used in the biodegradation of cyanide because it is capable to use it as a nitrogen source. The present review is mainly focused on the putative role of iron-containing enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid cycle in cyanide resistance by P. pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344.

The Neanderthal face is not cold adapted.

Many morphological features of the Pleistocene fossil hominin Homo neanderthalensis, including the reputed large size of its paranasal sinuses, have been interpreted as adaptations to extreme cold, as some Neanderthals lived in Europe during glacial periods. This interpretation of sinus evolution rests on two assumptions: that increased craniofacial pneumatization is an adaptation to lower ambient temperatures, and that Neanderthals have relatively large sinuses. Analysis of humans, other primates, and rodents, however, suggests that the first assumption is suspect; at least the maxillary sinu
