A panel of eight tests was used to study 200 cases of acute brucellosis, 200 patients negative for brucella as a control group and 200 apparently healthy individuals as a second control group. Seven llamas were immunized with killed Brucella abortus S1119.3 cells and bled sequentially, resulting in 64 samples. An eighth llama was kept as a negative control. In addition, 299 llama and 2075 alpaca sera, submitted for diagnostic testing, were included. Leptospirosis is a reemerging and a complex zoonotic bacterial disease, caused by pathogenic serovars of Leptospira interrogans. A total of 124 sera samples of dogs belonging to different categories like vaccinated, unvaccinated-semiowned, and stray dogs were subjected to sampling. UNLABELLED: Tetraplegia developed abruptly in an 11-y-old with pneumococcal meningitis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple hyperintensities at the brainstem-spinal cord junction. Serological tests were positive for Mycoplasma pneumoniae (microparticle agglutination and specific IgMs). Erythromycin and dexamethasone were started promptly, and 10 d later the patient was discharged with normal neurological function.
CONCLUSION: Tetraplegia during the course of pneumococcal meningitis in an 11-y-old girl disappeared after treatment with ceftriaxone, erythromycin and dexamethasone.

Serum samples were obtained from 249 individuals in Londrina-Paraná, Brazil. The sera were analysed for leptospiral agglutinins by microscopic agglutination tests and 22.1% were positive. Of these positives per group were 24.6% for butchers, 25.9% for farm workers, 17.2% for children and 22.2% for servants. The agglutinin titers ranged from 1:200 to 1:3200. The highest titers were obtained for the serovars sejroe (butchers), grippotyphosa (farm workers), javanica, canicola, panama, wolffi and pyrogenes (children) and butembo (servants).

The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) using a formolised yolk sac antigen (FYSA) has been shown to be a sensitive, specific test for legionellosis and results obtained on the same serum specimens in different laboratories agree closely. The rapid micro-agglutination test (RMAT) has the advantage of being semi-automatable and also sensitive and specific. Both tests gave negative results with sera from patients with infections due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, Coxiella burnetti and other agents.
