Alcoholic beverages have been consumed for centuries in different countries around the world. Today, we know that the ethanol they contain is associated with significant health risks, especially in the case of abuse, in individuals with special health conditions, and in pregnant women. However, over the years, awareness has grown that wine, especially red wine, has a beneficial effect on human health due to the powerful effect of the antioxidant substances it contains, known under the generic term of polyphenols. The main concern remains around the ethanol content of wine and its effects on he

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a consequence of excessive alcohol use. According to many studies, alcohol represents a significant socioeconomic and health risk factor in today's population. According to data from the World Health Organization, there are about 75 million people who have alcohol disorders, and it is well known that its use leads to serious health problems. ALD is a multimodality spectrum that includes alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFL) and alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH), consequently leading to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. In addition, the rapid progression of alcoholic li

Although numerous adverse effects of alcohol addiction on health, behavior, and brain function were widely reported, the neurobiological mechanism of alcohol dependence remains largely unknown. In this study, a total of twenty-nine patients with alcohol dependence and twenty-nine status-matched normal controls (NCs) were recruited. Percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) was applied to identify alcohol-related brain activity deficits. We found that alcohol dependence was associated with widespread differences in the left orbitofrontal cortex, right higher visual cortex, right supramarginal gy

PURPOSE: An update on pharmacotherapy for achieving and maintaining abstinence and mitigating hepatic damage in patients with alcoholic live … ALD only.
CONCLUSION: Although various treatments have been investigated for ALD in patients with alcoholism, complete abstinence from alcohol is currently the only recommended form of hepatoprotection for the entire spectrum of ALD diagnoses.

AIMS: The aims of this study were (1) to examine the association between neighborhood alcohol outlet density and individual self-reported alcohol-related health outcomes in the last year-sexually transmitted infections (STI), motor vehicle accidents, injury, liver problems, hypertension and experienced violence; (2) to determine whether the relationship between morbidity and alcohol outlet density is mediated by individual alcohol consumption; and (3) to explore the role of alcohol outlet density in explaining any observed racial and ethnic differences in morbidity.
METHOD: Hierarchical model

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial evidence that adults with alcohol dependence show different responses (increased craving, increased salivation, changes in heart rate) to alcohol-related stimuli (i.e., alcohol cue reactivity) than nonalcoholics. Alcohol cue reactivity appears to be related to dependence severity and has been used to predict treatment outcomes, where more reactive alcoholics have poorer outcomes than less reactive alcoholics. Adolescents may also develop alcohol dependence, though it is uncertain whether they experience craving and cue reactivity in the presence of alcohol-assoc

In this study, the morphology and the catecholamine levels of the myocardium in both well-nourished and malnourished alcohol-fed rats were examined. Alcohol has been administered to rats for 16 weeks. Rats fed a diet containing alcohol corresponding to 40 per cent. of total calorific intake and inadequate amounts of calories and nutrients developed morphological changes in the heart, while the controls did not. In addition, an increase in cardiac noradrenaline concentration and heart: body weight ratio could be observed. There were no differences in myocardial morphology and catecholamine conc

A 46-year-old chronic alcoholic patient with typical and severe congestive cardiomyopathy was studied hemodynamically on two separate occasions. The second study followed after a 1 1/2-year period of virtually complete abstention from alcohol and revealed that the left ventricular dysfunction had disappeared. Depsite persisting atrial fibrillation, the response to moderate exercise and to plasma volume expansion was within the normal range. When last seen, 29 months after initial hospitalization, the patient was symptom-free and was not given any treatment.

The alcoholic hyalin which is composed of light and dark occasionally swollen and conglomerating filaments, is found to be surrounded by proliferated RER, hypertrophied Golgi apparatus and mitochondria containing enlarged matrical granules. Besides, microfilaments and some microtubules are seen in relation to the hyaline bodies. In biopsies where hyaline bodies are scarce, hepatocytes without alcoholic hyalin present similar changes and the Golgi apparatus is seen to contain very low density lipoprotein-like particles. These ultrastructural changes are suggested to be related to an early stage

BACKGROUND: Parental drinking and parent alcohol use disorder (AUD) are known predictors of adolescent positive alcohol expectancies, but their link to negative expectancies is unclear. Research suggests that parent drinking may indirectly predict adolescent expectancies through exposure to parental drinking events. However, exposure to parent negative alcohol consequences may be more relevant to adolescents' expectancies. The present study tested the mediating effect of parent observable negative alcohol consequences in the association between parent AUD and adolescent expectancies.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and intrinsic to its pathophysiology. Optimal treatment requires a multidisciplinary team approach and a working alliance between patients and providers. Diagnosing AUD involves a combination of thorough history taking, physical examination, screening questionnaires, and alcohol biomarkers. Alcohol biomarkers have advantages and limitations of use of which clinicians should be aware. AUD treatment is effective, multifaceted, and can be tailored to each individual. Available treatment modalities are myriad: motivational enhan

BACKGROUND: The low level of response (LR) to alcohol is a genetically influenced characteristic related to the development of alcohol use disorders (AUDs). This phenotype is found in men with a family history (FH) of alcoholism, predicts future AUDs, and has heritabilities as high as 60%. However, despite evidence of genetic influences for AUDs in both sexes, the majority of studies evaluating differences in LR across high- and low-risk groups have been conducted on males, and it is unclear how generalizable these results are to women.
METHODS: Twenty-five women who are family history positi…
