Caatinga is a biome exclusive to the semiarid zone of Brazil, where studies on ticks and tick-borne diseases are scarce. Herein, we investigated the occurrence of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Coxiella in wild mammals, domestic dogs and their ectoparasites using molecular and serological techniques. During 2014-2016, blood samples and ectoparasites were collected from 70 small mammals (51 rodents, 18 marsupials, 1 wild canid) and 147 domestic dogs in three areas of the Caatinga. Through serological analyses of domestic dogs of the three areas, 8 to 11 % were seropositive for Rickettsia rickettsii

Brazilian Pantanal is the world´s largest wetland ecosystem, where cattle's ranching is the most important economic activity. The objective of this study was to compile some epidemiological features on equine piroplasmids from the Nhecolândia sub-region of Pantanal wetland through the evaluation of the patterns of T. equi and B. caballi infections in different groups of horses; identification of the tick species that infest horses; and to study phylogenetic relationships among Theileria equi 18S rRNA gene sequences. During October 2015, blood and serum samples were collected from 170 horses in

BACKGROUND: The majority of the African population lives in rural areas and depends on agriculture for their livelihoods. To increase the productivity and sustainability of their farms, they need access to affordable yield-enhancing inputs of which parasite control is of paramount importance. We therefore determined the status of current tick species with the highest economic impact on cattle by sampling representative numbers of animals in each of seven sub-Saharan countries.
METHODS: Data included tick species' half-body counts from approximately 120 cattle at each of two districts per coun

BACKGROUND: Public green spaces are important for human health, but they may expose visitors to ticks and tick-borne pathogens. We sought to understand, for the first time, visitors' exposure risk and drivers of tick-preventative behavior in three popular parks on Staten Island, New York City, NY, USA, by integrating tick hazard and park visitors' behaviors, risk perceptions and knowledge.
METHODS: We conducted tick sampling in three parks, across three site types (open spaces, the edge of open spaces, and trails) and three within-park habitats (maintained grass, unmaintained herbaceous, and

BACKGROUND: The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is an economically important parasite of livestock. Effective control of ticks using acaricides is threatened by the emergence of resistance to many existing compounds. Several continuous R. microplus cell lines have been established and provide an under-utilised resource for studies into acaricide targets and potential genetic mutations associated with resistance. As a first step to genetic studies using these resources, this study aimed to determine the presence or absence of two genes and their transcripts that have been linked

BACKGROUND: Ticks are blood-feeding arthropods that carry diverse pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms, yet their dynamics within tick tissues remain poorly understood. We compared the microbial communities in the haemolymph, saliva, ovaries, midgut, and salivary glands of individual Amblyomma gemma and Hyalomma rufipes sampled from dromedary camel using V1-V2 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. RESULTS: The haemolymph exhibited the highest bacterial diversity, followed by the saliva and ovaries, while the midgut and salivary glands had lower diversities. Keystone taxa exhibited varied connect

The family Streblidae comprises a monophyletic group of Hippoboscoidea, hematophagous dipterans that parasitize bats. Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp. have been reported in bats sampled in Europe, Africa, Asia, North, Central and South America. However, there are few reports on the Bartonella and Rickettsia bacteria infecting Hippoboscoidea flies and mites. While Spinturnicidae mites are ectoparasites found only in bats, those belonging to the family Macronyssidae comprise mites that also parasitize other mammal species. This study investigates the occurrence and assesses the phylogenetic p

From May 2007 to March 2008, blood samples were collected from 92 healthy dogs living in 21 households (17 farms in rural area, and 4 homes in urban area) in 6 counties of the State of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. In addition, ticks were collected from these dogs. A mean of 4.4+/-3.0 dogs (range: 1-12) were sampled per household; 78 and 14 dogs were from rural and urban areas, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) designed to amplify fragments of the 18S rDNA gene of Babesia spp or Hepatozoon spp revealed amplicons of the expected size in 20 (21.7%) dogs for Babesia, and 54 (58

Horses from six stud farms representing the most frequent types of horse breeding in Brazil were tested for Babesia antibodies by the IFA test. The farms are located at the tropic of Capricorn at an altitude of 472-715 m where temperatures below 0 degrees C may occur. Horses of conventional stud farms were infested with Dermacentor nitens, Amblyomma cajennense, and Boophilus microplus. Infestation with Bo. microplus was associated with direct or indirect contact of horses with cattle, and was not detected at professional stud farms. At one large professional stud farm, only D. nitens was obser

BACKGROUND: Understanding the range of vectors and pathogen diversity in sub-Saharan Africa is crucial for efficient disease prevention and control efforts. Domestic dogs are susceptible to many vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) and serve as sentinels for several human pathogens. Yet, critical surveillance gaps in canine VBPs persist in Central Africa, where the tropical climate and pastoral agro-livelihoods create unique transmission risks.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey from September to October 2021, collecting 4238 ticks from 1254 domestic dogs across 56 villages in Chad, Afri

UNLABELLED: Climate change, land development, and increased outdoor human activity have increased the prevalence and distribution of tick-borne pathogens, causing public health issues. Asia is a pivotal region of emerging infectious diseases caused by zoonotic disease. Therefore, this study aimed to construct effective surveillance systems and establish preventive strategies against novel tick-borne diseases. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed to detect tick-borne pathogens from animal blood-fed ticks. Ticks (n = 261) were collected from different animals across nine Asian countrie

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a novel allergic disease characterized by hypersensitivity responses following exposure to the glycan galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal or α-Gal) attached to mammalian proteins and fats in food, supplements, and medications. Bites from hard-bodied ticks, including Amblyomma americanum (Aa or lone star tick) in the United States, have been identified as drivers of allergic sensitization to alpha-gal. Here, we review clinical presentation, epidemiology, diagnosis, and current understanding of the mechanistic drivers of AGS, with particular fo

Anhui Province in China bears the highest burden of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) nationwide; however, comprehensive surveys of tick vectors remain limited. We aimed to characterize tick species composition and to evaluate spatial patterns of vector distribution across SFTS-endemic areas in the province. In this study, a combined morphological and molecular approach was utilized for tick identification. Ticks were initially identified based on their morphological characteristics. Subsequently, gene fragments of the large subunit ribosomal RNA (16 S rRNA) and the cytochrome

BACKGROUND: A subset of Australians who have been bitten by ticks experience a complex of chronic and debilitating symptoms which cannot be attributed to the known pathogenic species of bacteria present in Australia. As a result, there has been a renewed effort to identify and characterise viruses in Australian terrestrial ticks. Recent transcriptome sequencing of Ixodes and Amblyomma ticks has revealed the presence of multiple virus sequences. However, without virus isolates our ability to understand the host range and pathogenesis of newly identified viruses is limited. We have established a

BACKGROUND: Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis is caused by infection with the bacteria Ehrlichia chaffeensis through the bite of an infected lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum). Patients infected with Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis often present with symptoms including fever, headache, myalgia, and occasionally a macular rash. The presence of other endemic tick-borne diseases with similar symptoms, such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, complicate the diagnosis of Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A patient developed a fever, diffuse myalgia, headache, and a non-productive cough 5 da

There are uncertainties about the global epidemiological data of infections due to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). We estimated the global case fatality rate (CFR) of CCHFV infections and the prevalence of CCHFV in humans, ticks and other animal species. We also explored the socio-demographic and clinical factors that influence these parameters. In this systematic review with meta-analyses we searched publications from database inception to 03rd February 2020 in Pubmed, Scopus, and Global Index Medicus. Studies included in this review provided cross-sectional data on the CFR and

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis caused by Babesia rossi, transmitted by Haemaphysalis elliptica in South Africa, has also been reported from Nigeria. Although H. leachi (sensu lato) is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa, published literature on the occurrence of canine babesiosis is meagre. It has been postulated that the genotype of Babesia rossi Erythrocyte Membrane Antigen 1 (BrEMA1) may be linked to virulence of the specific isolate. The primary objective of this study was to detect and characterise tick-borne pathogens in dogs presented to a veterinary hospital using molecular techniques. In

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are one of the most important causes of systemic febrile illness among travelers from developed countries, but little is known about their incidence in indigenous populations, especially in West Africa.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Overall seroprevalence evaluated by immunofluorescence using six rickettsial antigens (spotted fever and typhus group) in rural populations of two villages of the Sine-Saloum region of Senegal was found to be 21.4% and 51% for spotted fever group rickettsiae for Dielmo and Ndiop villages, respectively. We investigated the role of tick-b

'Query' (Q) fever is a neglected but emerging or re-emerging zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella (C.) burnetii. Several host species are considered or speculated to be the primary reservoir hosts for human infection. In the past, several research groups in Nigeria have evaluated the prevalence of C. burnetii in various vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Currently, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding the epidemiology of the pathogen in Nigeria with limited or no attention to control and prevention programs. Therefore, this review was undertaken to comprehend the current situ
