AIM: To demonstrate the possibilities of reconstructing a prosthetic stump in a complex defect using staged osteotomy and lengthening, since for successful prosthetic replacement of the tibial stump, its sufficient length is necessary, which is not always possible.
METHODS: In this article, we present a 25-year-old man diagnosed with a non-prosthetic short stump of the right tibia with extensive necrotized scars of the anterior and end surfaces, closely soldered to the bone sawdust, which underwent lengthening of the short stump of the tibia using the Ilizarov method.

INTRODUCTION: A key determinant of prosthesis use is the quality of fit of the prosthetic socket. The socket surrounds the residual limb and applies the appropriate force distribution to the soft tissues to maintain suspension, support, and stabilization as well as translate limb movement to prosthesis movement. The challenge in socket fabrication lays in achieving geometry that provides the appropriate force distribution at physiologically appropriate locations; a task dependent on the understanding of interface tissue-mechanics.

The authors report the first description since 1957 of a lumbar disc herniation as a cause of stump pain. Most amputees frequently experience stump pain or phantom pain. The pathophysiology of phantom pain is not clearly defined; however, there are well-defined reasons for stump pain such as infection, tissue necrosis, hematoma, wound breakdown, bone spur, neuroma, and so on. During the differential diagnosis, radiculopathy due to lumbar disc herniation must also be evaluated.

Comparative maturation rates of 36 below-knee postoperative, healed amputation residual limbs were observed. Measured were the limb volumes and circumferences. Three methods of residual limb stabilization were employed: 1) elastic wrap; 2) plaster cast and pylon; and, 3) plastic laminate socket and pylon. Flavobacterium odoratum was isolated from the stumps of the amputated toes of a debilitated patient. Gentamicin therapy and the poor state of health of the patient provided suitable conditions for this gentamicin-resistant species to multiply. When the gentamicin therapy was stopped, and as the patient's heal improved, F. odoratum gradually disappeared to be replaced by Staphylococcus aureus. This appears to be the first report of the isolation of F. odoratum in Australia, and it indicates the potential of this resistant species to act as a source of infection for groups at risk.
