Direct transfer of adult hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale) from dog to child for therapeutic purposes.

To induce chronic and continuous intestinal blood loss as therapy for congenital polycythemia in a 3 year old child, adult Ancylostoma duodenale were transferred directly from a dog to the patient via a nasoduodenal tube. By transferring adult worms, larval migration via the skin, blood and lungs--with possible attendant undesired side effects--was avoided. Furthermore, by eliminating larval migration with associated intimate tissue contact, immunogenicity was presumably reduced, and a known number of adult worms could be delivered directly to the final predilection site, the small intestine.

Studies on infectivity, longevity and fecundity of Ancylostoma ceylanicum in golden hamsters.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is a new introduction as an experimental hookworm model. Information on the biology of this parasite in its laboratory host--the golden hamster, is meagre. Its infectivity, longevity and fecundity were studied to obtain relevant information especially on vulnerable points in the maintenance and continuation of the infection. 100% infectivity was obtained with an inoculum of 60 larvae per animal. Maximum numbers of parasites were harboured from day 15 to day 18 after infection and thereafter gradually declined. Approximately 10% of the worms were still present at the end

[Vulvitis due to ancylostoma duodenale (author's transl)].

There is reported about a case of vulvitis, which was resistant to usual forms of therapy. Infections as such of Candida or of Trichomonas as well as diabetes could be excluded. But there could be proved an incidence of Ancylostoma duodenale, which is nowadays more often to be observed. Adequate therapy was successful.
