Anorectal melanoma is an uncommon cancer with a poor prognosis. We aim to describe the clinical presentation, treatment and outcome of patients with anorectal melanoma in our center. Retrospective study of patients with anorectal melanoma treated between 2000 and 2011 at a cancer center in Lisbon. Ten patients were identified, eight females and two males, with median age 70.5 years (32-79). Symptoms at presentation were rectal bleeding (8), anal pain (4) and discomfort (3). Tumor location was anal (6), rectal (3) and anorectal transition (2). Seven patients had surgery: abdomino-pelvic resecti

Anal cancer is a rare tumor with an incidence that has been rising over the last 25 years. The disease was once thought to develop as a result of chronic irritation, but it is now known that this is not the case. Multiple risk factors, including human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, anoreceptive intercourse, cigarette smoking, and immunosuppression, have been identified. HIV infection is also associated with anal cancer; there is a higher incidence in HIV-positive patients but the direct relationship between HIV and anal cancer has been difficult to separate from the prevalence of HPV in this

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to define the role of grey-scale transrectal ultrasound in the evaluation, staging and follow-up of patients with histologically diagnosed anal canal cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-six patients underwent digital rectal examination, anoscopy, abdomino-pelvic CT, inguinal and transrectal ultrasound; Fifty-five received combined chemoradiotherapy, whereas 21 received only radiotherapy due to clinical contraindications to chemotherapy. Before and after treatment TNM and UT staging were compared. After treatment we evaluated the sensitivity of transrectal

BACKGROUND: Darkly pigmented individuals may manifest unusual or uncharacteristic presentations of various skin conditions, including heavy pigmentation of cutaneous tumors.
OBJECTIVE: To increase the awareness of an unusual presentation of Bowen's disease in a darkly pigmented individual.
METHODS: We report the case of a 52 year old black woman that presented with a lesion clinically consistent with malignant melanoma. However, histopathologic examination revealed pigmented Bowen's disease.
RESULTS: A biopsy is almost always indicated to confirm the diagnosis of lesions in darkly pigmented

Costello syndrome is characterized by poor postnatal growth, mental retardation, curly hair, coarse face, loose skin of the hands and feet, and nasal papillomata. Patients with Costello syndrome have a high incidence of cardiac involvement, such as arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or congenital anomalies. The importance of cardiac involvement in Costello syndrome has not been strongly emphasized thus far, although arrhythmia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are both serious forms of cardiac involvement. We report the case of a Japanese girl with Costello syndrome, who experienced life-

A 48 year old man presented with invasive adenocarcinoma in the wall of a non-healing anal fistula. The subsequent abdomino-perineal resection specimen showed residual invasive carcinoma coexisting with in situ carcinoma of anal glands as well as in situ squamous carcinoma of the anal canal. The epithelium of the anal canal had koilocytotic features. DNA hybridisation studies by the dot blot technique showed weak positivity for human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes 16, 18. This case illustrates a number of important points--namely, anal fistulas, particularly non-healing fistulas should be biops

In a seven-year period, 200 patients with persistent or recurrent anal and perianal condyloma acuminatum were treated by immunotherapy. There were 120 primary and 80 recurrent cases in the study. Autogenous vaccine was prepared for each patient and injected subcutaneously, 0.5 ml weekly, for six weeks. Excellent results were seen in 84 per cent, fair results in 11 per cent and no benefit in 5 per cent of patients. No adverse reactions or complications were encountered. Long-term follow-up (average 46 months) was possible for 86 per cent of the patients, all of whom remained disease free. Immun

The worldwide prevalence of infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in women without cervical abnormalities is 11-12% with higher rates in sub-Saharan Africa (24%), Eastern Europe (21%) and Latin America (16%). The two most prevalent types are HPV16 (3.2%) and HPV18 (1.4%). Prevalence increases in women with cervical pathology in proportion to the severity of the lesion reaching around 90% in women with grade 3 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive cancer. HPV infection has been identified as a definite human carcinogen for six types of cancer: cervix, penis, vulva, vagina, anus an

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine if women with a history of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia grades 2 and 3 (CIN2 and CIN3) are at increased long-term risk for developing non-cervix HPV-related malignancies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Women diagnosed with CIN2 or CIN3 between 1980 and 2005 were identified from the British Columbia (BC) Cancer Agency Cervical Cancer Screening Program's database. These patients' records were then cross-referenced with the BC Cancer Registry for diagnosis of vulvar, vaginal, anal or head and neck (HN) cancers during the period subsequent to t

Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease afflicting approximately 80% of the population. HPV infection is an essential factor in cervical carcinogenesis and cervical carcinoma is the second most common cause of cancer among women worldwide. In addition to cervical cancer, other malignancies in both men and women such as esophageal, oropharyngeal, and anal cancer have been causally associated with this virus. Other gender-specific HPV-related cancers include penile, vulvar and vaginal cancer. HPV-16 is the most common HPV type associated with

Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is recognized as one of the major causes of infection-related cancer worldwide, as well as the causal factor in other diseases. Strong evidence for a causal etiology with HPV has been stated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer for cancers of the cervix uteri, penis, vulva, vagina, anus and oropharynx (including base of the tongue and tonsils). Of the estimated 12.7 million new cancers occurring in 2008 worldwide, 4.8% were attributable to HPV infection, with substantially higher incidence and mortality rates seen in developing versus dev

Twelve types of human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been isolated thus far from papillomatous and Bowenoid lesions of the human genital tract. Four type, HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 are most frequently found. HPV 6 and 11 cause the typical genital warts (condylomata acuminata) and mild dysplastic lesions of the cervix characterized by a high degree of koilocytotic atypia. HPV 16 and 18 are preferentially found in Bowenoid papulosis and Bowen's disease at external genital sites. Moderate and severe cervical dysplasias with little or no koilocytosis appear to be common manifestations of these infections

HIV positive and negative patients with anal condylomata were compared to determine an association with squamous cell neoplasia, its disease progression, and response to treatment. From 1992 to 2003, 61 patients were diagnosed with anal condylomata by anal biopsy. Thirty-four patients were HIV+ and 27 patients were considered HIV-. Upon retrospective chart review, details on disease progression, development of malignancy, and subsequent treatment were collected. Sixty-one per cent of HIV+ patients had a neoplastic process in contrast to 25 per cent of HIV- patients (P = 0.005). Five patients d

PURPOSE: In most cases, squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) is treated with chemo-radiotherapy preserving sphincter function and offering good long-term survival and low recurrence rates. However, chemo-radiotherapy has several side effects: dyspareunia, impotence, fecal incontinence, pain, and skin symptoms. Small/T1 tumors, without metastatic disease, can be treated with local excision alone. We aimed to systematically review the literature regarding outcome following local excision of T1 SCCA.
METHODS: PubMed and Embase databases were searched for studies that investigated outcome f

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a highly transmissible infection responsible for a range of diseases in women including cervical carcinomas, vulval carcinomas, anogenital carcinomas and genital warts. In men it is associated with penile carcinomas, anogenital carcinomas and oropharyngeal carcinomas. The history of the development of HPV vaccines includes a significant Australian input and represents a tremendous advancement in our understanding of HPV virology as well as further elucidating the overall contribution of viruses to carcinogenesis. Prophylactic HPV vaccines were licensed for use in

We report the case of a women with severe perineal defect secondary to a perianal cancer that required reconstruction from the posterior wall of the urinary bladder to the coccyx, and which laterally surpassed both ischial tuberosities. For this reconstructive work, we used two V-Y advanced flaps taken from the gluteal region. On the basis of these flaps, we modified the final position in the advance of the lateral ends, crossing the tips of each flap over each other to provide a greater volume of tissue in the central area, with no signs of vascular injury. We believe that the use of V-Y flap
