Physiological and Behavioral Mechanisms of Thermoregulation in Mammals.

This review analyzes the main anatomical structures and neural pathways that allow the generation of autonomous and behavioral mechanisms that regulate body heat in mammals. The study of the hypothalamic neuromodulation of thermoregulation offers broad areas of opportunity with practical applications that are currently being strengthened by the availability of efficacious tools like infrared thermography (IRT). These areas could include the following: understanding the effect of climate change on behavior and productivity; analyzing the effects of exercise on animals involved in sporting activ

The Progression of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Alzheimer's Disease During a Five-Year Follow-Up: Kuopio ALSOVA Study.

BACKGROUND: An improved understanding of the role of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has recently emerged. NPS lead to hospitalization and caregiver stress, but are more variable during the course of the disease than other symptoms. Knowledge about the role of specific NPS in disease progression and prognosis is especially limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between specific NPS and AD severity during a 5-year follow-up period, and to determine which baseline NPS predict AD progression. METHODS: 236 persons with very mild (CDR 0.5) or mi

Health Behaviors and their Relationship with Disease Control in People Attending Genetic Clinics with a Family History of Breast or Colorectal Cancer.

The current work aimed to assess health behaviors, perceived risk and control over breast/colorectal cancer risk and views on lifestyle advice amongst attendees at cancer family history clinics. Participants attending the East of Scotland Genetics Service were invited to complete a questionnaire (demographic data, weight and height, health behaviors and psycho-social measures of risk and perceived control) and to participate in an in-depth interview. The questionnaire was completed by 237 (49 %) of attendees, ranging from 18 to 77 years (mean age 46 (±10) years). Reported smoking rates (11 %)

Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery: Prevalence, Etiology, and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is a life-limiting disease that is associated with a number of co-morbidities. Bariatric surgery remains the most efficacious and durable weight loss method available to patients. However, a significant percentage of patients can regain weight resulting in frustration, depression, and return of obesity-related co-morbidities. The present review provides an overview of the most common therapeutic modalities available to combat weigh regain after weight loss surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Given the high percentage of patients with weight regain after surgery, significant e

Dimebon enhances hippocampus-dependent learning in both appetitive and inhibitory memory tasks in mice.

Pre-clinical and clinical studies on dimebon (dimebolin or latrepirdine) have demonstrated its use as a cognitive enhancer. Here, we show that dimebon administered to 3-month-old C57BL6N mice 15 min prior to training in both appetitive and inhibitory learning tasks via repeated (0.1 mg/kg) and acute (0.5 mg/kg) i.p. injections, respectively, increases memory scores. Acute treatment with dimebon was found to enhance inhibitory learning, as also shown in the step-down avoidance paradigm in 7-month-old mice. Bolus administration of dimebon did not affect the animals' locomotion, exploration or an

Evaluation of the reinforcing and discriminative stimulus effects of gamma-hydroxybutyrate in rhesus monkeys.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a metabolite of GABA that is present in the CNS and fulfils at least some of the criteria for a neurotransmitter. Its effects are generally similar to those of CNS depressants and include ataxia, sleep and anesthesia. It has also been suggested that GHB is a drug of abuse. The present experiment was designed to evaluate GHB in procedures predictive of abuse and dependence potential in rhesus monkeys. Three monkeys were surgically prepared with indwelling silicone venous catheters and allowed to self-administer methohexital or saline in twice-daily experimental se

Mazindol anorexia is mediated by activation of dopaminergic mechanisms.

1 Anorexia in rats following injections of mazindol (0.1-8 mg/kg i.p.) could be antagonized by pretreatment with a dopamine receptor blocker (primozide) but not by pretreatment with an alpha-adrenoceptor blocker (phenoxybenzamine), a beta-adrenoceptor blocker ((-)-propranolol), or a 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor blocker (methergoline). 2 In rats with a unilateral lesion in the substantia nigra made by stereotaxic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine, mazindol caused a dose-dependent turning towards the lesioned side, indicating an indirect mechanism of action. This effect could be antagonized by pret

Horizontal and vertical movements of host-seeking Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs in a hardwood forest.

The nymph of the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) is an important bridging vector of the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) to humans in the far-western United States. The previously unknown dispersal capabilities of this life stage were studied in relation to logs, tree trunks, and adjacent leaf-litter areas in a mixed hardwood forest using mark-release-recapture methods. In two spatially and temporally well-spaced trials involving logs, the estimated mean distances that nymphs dispersed ranged from approximately 0.04 to 0.20 m/day on logs vs 0.11 to 0.72 m/day in litt

Effect of eating rate on binge size in Bulimia Nervosa.

Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating. During binge eating episodes, patients often describe the rapid consumption of food, and laboratory studies have shown that during binges patients with BN eat faster than normal controls (NC), but the hypothesis that a rapid rate of eating contributes to the excessive intake of binge meals has not yet been experimentally tested. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of eating rate on binge size in BN, in order to determine whether binge size is mediated, in part, by rate of eating. Thirteen

Postnatal development of hypothalamic inputs to the dorsal vagal complex in rats.

The hypothalamus is critically involved in energy homeostasis and is an appropriate focus for research investigating the central neural underpinnings of obesity, anorexia and normal food intake. However, little is known regarding pathways and mechanisms that convey relevant hypothalamic signals to the brainstem circuits that ultimately control ingestive behavior. This brief review highlights work investigating the postnatal development of hypothalamic inputs to the hindbrain dorsal vagal complex (DVC). Research findings indicate that these inputs are both structurally and functionally immature

Feeding behavior of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), a putative vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela.

Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga & Feliciangeli is the first new sand fly species in the L. longipalpis species complex that has been formally described since it was separated by genetic as well as by morphological characters. It is the putative vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis in La Rinconada, Curarigua, a restricted focus in central western Venezuela. We investigated the feeding behavior of this species. The blood meals from 210 of 429 (48.9%) engorged females caught by CDC light traps were identified by a dot enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay using antisera against hu

Magnesium appetite in the rat.

Rats modify their ingestive behaviour to correct deficiencies of minerals such as sodium and calcium. Here, we examined the effect of magnesium deprivation on the ingestion of MgCl2 and other solutions. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a nutritionally complete or magnesium-deficient diet and were then given 3.2, 10, 32, or 100mM MgCl2, 32mM CaCl2, 32mM NaCl, 10mM HCl, or 2.5mM saccharin, and their intake was measured for 24h in a two-bottle choice test with water. Within the first 5 min, magnesium-deprived subjects given 3.2, 32, or 100mM MgCl2 or 32mM CaCl2 drank significantly more of these

Hand use and gestural communication in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Hand use in gestural communication was examined in 115 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Hand use was measured in subjects while they gestured to food placed out of their reach. The distribution of hand use was examined in relation to sex, age, rearing history, gesture type, and whether the subjects vocalized while gesturing. Overall, significantly more chimpanzees, especially females and adults, gestured with their right than with their left hand. Foods begs were more lateralized to the right hand than pointing, and a greater prevalence of right-hand gesturing was found in subjects who s

Methods for voluntary weight loss and control. NIH Technology Assessment Conference Panel. Consensus Development Conference, 30 March to 1 April 1992.

One quarter to one third of Americans are overweight; as many as 40% of women and 24% of men are trying to lose weight at any given time; many have tried a variety of methods, such as diets, exercise, behavior modification, and drugs. In controlled settings, participants who remain in weight loss programs usually lose approximately 10% of their weight. However, one third to two thirds of the weight is regained within 1 year, and almost all is regained within 5 years. For many overweight persons, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong challenge. Successful weight loss improves

Neuropharmacology of drugs affecting food intake.

The importance of the central monoamines NE, DA and 5-HT in ingestive behavior has inevitably resulted in considerable effort being expended in attempting to implicate these monoamines in the mechanism of action of anorectic drugs. The statements that amphetamine-induced anorexia is unlikely to be due to central serotoninergic systems and that central noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems are not implicated in the appetite suppressant effect of fenfluramine are in all probability correct. However, to attribute the ability of drugs to decrease food intake unequivocally to a specific effect on

[Therapeutic strategy in obesity].

Therapeutic strategy in obesity depends on the patient. No diet is more effective or better than another; in fact a diet is more successful because the doctor's choice is adapted to his patient. Although the choice is relatively restrictive, the therapeutic options are variable enough to include a range from behavioral therapies to surgery. The different approaches to treatment are evaluated according to the degree of overweight, but perhaps above all to the personality and motivation of the obese patient, suggested by his dietary habits and the prior evolution of his body weight. As a complem

Anorectic effect of fenfluramine, cholecystokinin and neurotensin in genetically obese (ob/ob) mice.

To investigate the satiety defect of hyperphagic genetically obese (ob/ob) mice, acute feeding responses to three differently acting anorectic agents were determined in 7-9 weeks old lean (+/+) and ob/ob mice habituated to a restricted (0900-1230 hr) daily feeding routine. Fenfluramine (10 mg/kg), cholecystokinin (100 U/kg) and neurotensin (500 micrograms/kg), administered intraperitoneally 15 min before feeding, each produced a rapid but transient suppression of food consumption in ob/ob mice, similar to lean controls. The results suggest that neural satiety mechanisms triggered via serotonin
