A new brain region for coordinating speech articulation.

Human speech requires complex planning and coordination of mouth and tongue movements. Certain types of brain injury can lead to a condition known as apraxia of speech, in which patients are impaired in their ability to coordinate speech movements but their ability to perceive speech sounds, including their own errors, is unaffected. The brain regions involved in coordinating speech, however, remain largely unknown. In this study, brain lesions of 25 stroke patients with a disorder in the motor planning of articulatory movements were compared with lesions of 19 patients without such deficits.

When school engagement rhymes with roots breach. Adolescents and school avoidance in transcultural situations.

UNLABELLED: Frontiers in Psychiatry - Hypothesis and Theory | Research Topic: School Avoidance and Anxiety Disorders in Childhood. BACKGROUND: Anxious school avoidance (ASA) affects 1 to 5% of school-aged children and adolescents and carries well-documented consequences including school dropout, social isolation, and comorbid anxiety and depressive disorders. While functional, cognitive- behavioral, and psychodynamic models have significantly advanced the understanding of ASA, one dimension remains strikingly underexplored: its transcultural dimension. With over 281 million international migr

The stability of the alternative model of personality disorders: Example of the situation related to Covid-19.

AIM AND SCOPE: This article aims to explore the relationships between two key levels (Criteria A and B) in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). Specifically, it examines the articulation between the level of personality functioning (LPF) and the pathological personality dimensions (PPD) to understand their respective contributions to personality disorder (PD) diagnosis. METHOD: We analyzed data collected through the LPFS-BR and PID-5-BF instruments from two randomized samples of non-clinical participants, gathered both before (n=124) and after (n=126) the COVID-19 pandemic a

Transformative Potential of Outsider Art for Neurodivergent Artists.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: The intersections of inclusion, resilience, and socialisation within artistically stimulating environments are increasingly recognised in the education of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, scholarly attention remains limited regarding pre-professional support systems that integrate artefiletic (reflective) educational principles with studio practice. OBJECTIVE: This paper explores how artistic engagement in the field of outsider art offers transformative opportunities for advancing human rig

Differentiation of Motor Speech Disorders through the Seven Deviance Scores from MonPaGe-2.0.s.

For the clinical assessment of motor speech disorders (MSDs) in French, the MonPaGe-2.0.s protocol has been shown to be sensitive enough to diagnose mild MSD based on a combination of acoustic and perceptive scores. Here, we go a step further by investigating whether these scores-which capture deviance on intelligibility, articulation, voice, speech rate, maximum phonation time, prosody, diadochokinetic rate-contribute to the differential diagnosis of MSDs. To this aim, we trained decision trees for two-class automatic classification of different pairs of MSD subtypes based on seven deviance s

Coordinated Tcf7l2 regulation in a mouse model implicates Wnt signaling in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Mouse models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have repeatedly identified genes with long-term changes in expression, DNA methylation, noncoding RNA, and histone modifications in response to neurodevelopmental alcohol exposure. Articulation of FASD is achieved via alcohol's effect on gene expression, likely involving epigenetic regulation. The list of genes affected is large and heterogeneous, depending on experimental protocol. We present reanalysis and synthesis of results highlighting the Wnt transcription factor 7 like 2 (Tcf7l2) gene as uniquely compatible with hippocampal DNA me

Orthodontic treatment of a patient with Stickler syndrome.

Stickler syndrome (MIM 108300, 604841, 184840) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by midfacial flattening and variable disorders of vision, hearing and articulation. There are three types of the syndrome caused by mutations in different genes (type 1, COL2A1; type 2, COL11A1; and type 3, COL11A2). About 20% of type 1 patients have cleft palate or bifid uvula, but there have been no case reports of orthodontic treatment of this syndrome so far. The Japanese female patient presented here with Stickler syndrome was characterized by a flat midface and had high myopia, sensorineural hea

Oral diadochokinetic rate in adults.

Diadochokinetic rate has traditionally been used for assessment, diagnosis and therapy in patients who suffered from oral cancer resection, glossectomy, oral myofunctional disease, dysphagia, dysarthria, functional articulation disorders or apraxia of speech. This is because diadochokinetic rate shows the documented structural and physiological changes in the central nervous system and the peripheral components of oral and speech production mechanism. Diadochokinetic rates were obtained from seventy-six normal subjects by counting the repetition of oral function (/a:-u:/; /u:-i:/; and /i:-a:/)…

Assessing Laryngeal Neuromotor Activity from Phonation.

Neurodegenerative motor disorders affect the neuromuscular system challenging daily life and normal activity. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is among the most prevalent ones, with a large impact and rising prevalence rates. Speech is most affected by PD as far as phonatory and articulatory performance is concerned. Neuromotor activity (NMA) alterations have an impact on larynx muscles responsible for vocal fold adduction and abduction, hampering phonation stability and regularity. The main muscular articulators involved in phonation control are the cricothyroid (tensor) and thyroarytenoid (relaxer)

Beyond voice: perceptions of gender in male-to-female transsexuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review covers recent research findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of speech pathology intervention in enabling male-to-female transsexual individuals to portray their gender identity through speech. Research reports that extend our understanding of communication characteristics that contribute to perceptions of sex in male-to-female transsexuals are identified. Current issues related to the measurement of therapy effectiveness are also presented. RECENT FINDINGS: Earlier studies confirmed that an increase in voice pitch is achievable for many transsexuals. The importance of production frequency in therapy for childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: This study explores the importance of production frequency during speech therapy to determine whether more practice of speech targets leads to increased performance within a treatment session, as well as to motor learning, in the form of generalization to untrained words. METHOD: Two children with childhood apraxia of speech were treated with an alternating treatment AB design, with production frequency differing in the 2 treatments. The higher production frequency treatment required 100+ productions in 15 min, while the moderate-frequency treatment required 30-40 productions in the

Genetic and biologic classification of infantile spasms.

Infantile spasms constitute an age-dependent epilepsy, highly associated with cognitive impairment, autism, and movement disorders. Previous classification systems focused on a distinction between symptomatic and cryptogenic etiologies, and have not kept pace with recent discoveries of mutations in genes in key pathways of central nervous system development in patients with infantile spasms. Children with certain genetic syndromes are much likelier to manifest infantile spasms, and we review the literature to propose a genetic classification of these disorders. Children demonstrating genetic a
