Targeting the Autonomic Nervous System Balance in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain Using Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation: A Randomized, Crossover, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is characterized by an alteration in pain processing by the central nervous system that may affect autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the balance of parasympathetic and sympathetic ANS activation. In particular, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) solely reflects parasympathetic input and is reduced in CLBP patients. Yet, it remains unknown if non-invasive brain stimulation can alter ANS balance in CLBP patients. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if non-invasive brain stimulation modulates the ANS, we analyzed HRV metrics…

The Influence of Exercise and Physical Activity on Autonomic Nervous System Function Measured by Heart Rate Variability in Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus-A Systematic Review.

Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical activity and exercise, are essential in managing type 1 diabetes mellitus by improving glycemic control, cardiovascular health and autonomic function. Given the chronic nature and long-term complications associated with type 1 diabetes, strategies beyond pharmacotherapy are essential. This review examines the effects of exercise on heart rate variability, a key indicator of autonomic nervous system activity. A systematic search was conducted in March 2024 across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and CINAHL databases. Studies evaluating the retrospecti…

Prediction of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome: Development and validation of a non-invasive nomogram model based on autonomic nervous system assessment.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) can lead to acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We developed a nomogram model using heart rate variability (HRV) and other data to predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) following emergency coronary angiography in patients with ACS. METHODS: ACS patients admitted from January 2018 to June 2020 were examined. Holter monitors were used to collect HRV data for 24 h. Coronary angiograms, clinical data, and MACEs were recorded. A nomogram was developed using the results of Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: There were 439 patient…

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunctions as a Basis for a Predictive Model of Risk of Neurological Disorders in Subjects with Prior History of Traumatic Brain Injury: Implications in Alzheimer's Disease.

Autonomic dysfunction is very common in patients with dementia, and its presence might also help in differential diagnosis among dementia subtypes. Various central nervous system structures affected in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are also implicated in the central autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation. For example, deficits in central cholinergic function in AD could likely lead to autonomic dysfunction. We recently developed a simple, readily applicable evaluation for monitoring ANS disturbances in response to traumatic brain injury (TBI). This ability to monitor TBI allows for the possible …

Detecting effects of yoga therapy on heart rate variability and autonomic nervous system functioning in adults after cancer treatment: results from a study using single-subject experimental methods.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a source of physiological and psychological stress. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of autonomic reactivity to physiological and psychological stress. For an initial proof-of-concept, we investigated the effects of a yoga therapy (YT) intervention on HRV metrics and self-reported autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning using single-subject experimental methods. METHODS: Data from 20 adults (Mage (years) = 55.7 [SD = 8.6], 85% female, Myears from diagnosis = 2.8 [SD = 3.5]) were analyzed. Participants received an initial 90-min 1:1 YT session followed by 6 we…

Dual tachycardias associating double-exit left aortic sinus cusp tachycardia with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: evidence of a link between both arrhythmias by means of the autonomic nervous system.

INTRODUCTION: Dual tachycardias associating paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) with double-exit left aortic sinus cusp tachycardia (LASCT) are described for the first time in a patient referred for AF ablation. CASE: Both tachycardias were successfully ablated under Carto-Merge guidance. Noteworthy, vagal denervation during AF ablation was responsible for an immediate decrease in LASCT occurrence and inducibility. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the critical role that the autonomic nervous system plays within the cardiac arrhythmia framework.

Effect of Early-Life Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplement and Home Environment on Autonomic Nervous System Regulation at 9-11 Years: A Follow-Up of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Nutrition and the home environment contribute to the development of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). However, no study has examined the long-term effects of prenatal and postnatal small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) and home environment on ANS regulation. We investigated the effect of early-life SQ-LNS and home environment on ANS regulation at 9-11 years. Participants were children born to women who participated in a randomized controlled trial in Ghana from 2009 to 2014. Women were randomized to receive daily, from pregnancy until delivery, either SQ-LNS, multiple micr…

Intravenous magnesium sulfate for the management of severe hand, foot, and mouth disease with autonomic nervous system dysregulation in Vietnamese children: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Over the last 15 years, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has emerged as a major public health burden across the Asia-Pacific region. A small proportion of HFMD patients, typically those infected with enterovirus 71 (EV71), develop brainstem encephalitis with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation and may progress rapidly to cardiopulmonary failure and death. Although milrinone has been reported to control hypertension and support myocardial function in two small studies, in practice, a number of children still deteriorate despite this treatment. Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) …

Indicators of Immune and Neurohumoral Profile in Women of Fertile Age with Functional Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System Associated with Polymorphic Variants of the HTR2A (rs7997012) and TP53 (rs1042522) Genes.

In women of fertile age with functional disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), a complex of indicators of the immune and neurohumoral profile associated with polymorphic variants of the HTR2A (rs7997012) and TP53 (rs1042522) genes was revealed. In patients with the diagnosis "G90.8. Other disorders of the autonomic nervous system", the neurohumoral profile is characterized by excessive content of cortisol and serotonin (p<0.05), which indicates the development of the hypersympathicotonic variant of autonomic regulation disorders. The cellular immune profile in the examined individual…

Effect of adrenergic and muscarinic cholinergic agonists on atrial natriuretic peptide secretion by isolated rat atria. Potential role of the autonomic nervous system in modulating atrial natriuretic peptide secretion.

Stretching of the atrial wall is a known stimulant for atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion. Little is known about other factors that may influence ANP secretion. We examined the effects of the neurotransmitters of the autonomic nervous system on ANP secretion from isolated rat left atria. Superfusion with 10 muM norepinephrine produced a biphasic rise in ANP secretion with a peak response 2.5-fold above baseline secretion. To determine whether the response to norepinephrine primarily reflected alpha- or beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation, atria were superfused with 0.1 muM isoproteren…

Production of Lactobacillus brevis ProGA28 attenuates stress-related sleep disturbance and modulates the autonomic nervous system and the motor response in anxiety/depression behavioral tests in Wistar-Kyoto rats.

AIMS: Many studies have reported that the production of Lactobacillus brevis is beneficial for sleep, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Other known beneficial effects of Lactobacillus brevis include improvement of anxious or depressive symptoms and better modulation of the autonomic nervous system, both of which impact sleep. In this study, we investigated whether the sleep benefit of Lactobacillus brevis was associated with the modulating effects on the autonomic nervous system and anxious/depressive symptoms. MAIN METHODS: Wistar-Kyoto rats were fed the production of Lactobacill…
