Feasibility of low radiation dose retrospectively-gated cardiac CT for functional analysis in adult congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The use of cardiac computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation of adult congenital heart disease patients is limited due to concerns of high radiation doses. The purpose of this study was to prospectively assess whether low radiation dose cardiac CT is feasible to evaluate ventricular systolic function in adults with congenital heart disease. METHODS: The study group included 30 consecutive patients with significant congenital heart disease who underwent a total of 35 ECG-gated cardiac CT scans utilizing a 320-detector row CT scanner. Each study included a non-contrast scan and sub

Prophylactic amifostine preserves the biomechanical properties of irradiated bone in the murine mandible.

BACKGROUND: The authors have previously demonstrated that amifostine prophylaxis mitigates the pernicious effects of radiation in settings of fracture repair and distraction osteogenesis. Expanding on these studies, the authors examined the biomechanical properties of uninjured bone exposed to both radiation and amifostine. The authors hypothesize that radiation will degrade the biomechanical properties of native bone, and further hypothesize that prophylactic amifostine will preserve biomechanical properties to levels of normal bone and protect against radiation-induced morbidities. METHODS:

Real-world estimated effective radiation doses from commonly used cardiac testing and procedural modalities.

BACKGROUND: The volume of cardiac diagnostic tests that are performed has increased significantly in recent years. The benefits of these tests should be weighed against the risks, including exposure to ionizing radiation. We sought to determine the effective radiation doses associated with common cardiac imaging studies performed at a provincial referral heart centre in Vancouver, Canada, between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. METHODS: Effective radiation dose was calculated for all patients who underwent clinically indicated cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA), myocardial

Sacral Insufficiency Fractures are Common After High-dose Radiation for Sacral Chordomas Treated With or Without Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgery with high-dose radiation and high-dose radiation alone for sacral chordomas have shown promising local control rates. However, we have noted frequent sacral insufficiency fractures and perceived this rate to be higher than previously reported. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We wished (1) to characterize the incidence of sacral insufficiency fractures in patients with chordomas of the sacrum who received high-dose radiation, and (2) to determine whether patients treated with surgery plus high-dose radiation or high-dose radiation alone are more likely to experience a sacral fracture,

Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy After SpaceOAR Placement.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prostate cancer are offered a wide range of treatments from radiation therapy to chemotherapy to surgery. When giving radiation therapy, SpaceOAR hydrogel has been part of the standard treatment for the last decade to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure to the rectum. In rare cases, SpaceOAR may be placed but the patient cannot go through with radiation. The hydrogel ideally persists in the body for 3months then gets absorbed at 6months. OBJECTIVES: In this video presentation, we discuss our unique surgical case involving robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy i

Low-dose radiation exposure and risk of self-reported cataract in Fukushima nuclear emergency workers.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is a well-established radiogenic condition and recent evidence suggests an increased risk even at radiation doses of <100 mGy. Following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, ∼20 000 workers participated in emergency operations. This study aimed to investigate the association between cumulative low-dose occupational radiation exposure and the risk of cataract among workers enrolled in the Epidemiological Study of Health Effects in Fukushima Nuclear Emergency Workers. METHODS: Data from 5773 nuclear emergency workers participating in the cohort were anal

Cholangioscopy-assisted ERCP reduces radiation exposure in treating choledocholithiasis: a retrospective IPTW-adjusted cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional ERCP for common bile duct stones relies on fluoroscopy, which raises concerns about radiation exposure and may not fully exclude residual stones. This study compared cholangioscopy-assisted ERCP with conventional fluoroscopy-guided ERCP in routine treatment of choledocholithiasis. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 100 patients with bile duct stones treated between June 2024 and June 2025. The cholangioscopy-assisted group included patients who underwent electronic mother-baby cholangioscopy-assisted ERCP (n = 50), and the conventional group was

Immune-modulating effects on tumor-draining lymph nodes of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy combined with dual immunotherapy in patients with T3-4N0-2 NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLN) play a key role in inducing and promoting antitumor immunity. TDLN are commonly situated near the primary tumor and are therefore often exposed to therapeutic radiation. The impact of induction therapies comprising concurrent immunotherapy and radiation on TDLN is poorly understood. We studied the immune-modulating effects in TDLN of patients with T3-4N0-2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using a combination of spatial transcriptomics and immunohistochemical analyses. METHODS: This observational cohort study collected TDLN from 2 groups: (1) pat

Astragaloside IV mediates radiation-induced neuronal damage through activation of BDNF-TrkB signaling.

BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic radiation is relevant to human life, and radiation can trigger neurodegenerative diseases by altering the function of the central nervous system through oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and protein degradation. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, activates the BDNF-TrkB pathway and enhances synaptic plasticity in radiated mice, which can exert its neuroprotection. However, the exact molecular mechanisms are still unclear. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether AS-IV could play a neuroprotective role by regulating BDNF-TrkB path

Protection of the Eye from Ultraviolet Radiation Damage Among Adults in Addis Zemen Town, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic radiation or light having a wavelength of less than 400 nm but greater than 100 nm. Ultraviolet radiation, majorly from sunlight, can potentially damage any organ that is exposed to any part of its spectrum. Aside from the skin, the organ most susceptible to sunlight-induced damage is the eye. Ultraviolet radiation is reported to be the cause of multiple ocular problems ranging from benign conditions like pterygium and pinguecula to ocular malignancies such as basal cell carcinoma which finally leads to visual impairment and blindness. A retrospective dosimetry study of intensity-modulated radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: radiation-induced brainstem injury and dose-volume analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is the standard radical treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) but also causes transient as well as long-term complications. Patients who develop severe radiation-induced brainstem injuries have a poor prognosis due to the lack of effective medical therapies. However, the relationship between brainstem injury and radiation volume dose is unknown. In this study, we found that radiation-induced brainstem injury was significantly associated with brainstem dose per unit volume. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on a consecutive cohort of 327 patie
