Factors and pathways influencing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among children in middle childhood: a cross-sectional survey of 1,127 third-grade students in Beijing.

BACKGROUND: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption among children represents a significant risk factor for health problems, including obesity and dental caries. Children aged 8 ~ 9 years are in a critical developmental period for behavioral habit formation; however, the mechanisms underlying these behaviors require deeper investigation. Grounded in social-ecological theory, this study systematically explores the associations between multilevel factors-encompassing individual, interpersonal, environmental, and awareness of health labeling-and children's SSB consumption. METHODS: We conduct

Liuweizhiji Gegen-Sangshen beverage protects against alcoholic liver disease in mice through the gut microbiota mediated SCFAs/GPR43/GLP-1 pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a pathological state of the liver caused by longterm alcohol consumption. Recent studies have shown that the modulation of the gut microbiota and its metabolic products, specifically the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), exert a critical role in the evolution and progression of ALD. The Liuweizhiji Gegen-Sangshen beverage (LGS), as a functional beverage in China, is derived from a traditional Chinese herbal formula and has been clinically applied for ALD treatment, demonstrating significant efficacy. However, the underlying mechanisms of LGS for al

Disproportionately higher cardiovascular disease risk and incidence with high fructose corn syrup sweetened beverage intake among black young adults-the CARDIA study.

BACKGROUND: The black/white heart disease mortality disparity began increasing in the early 1980's, coincident with the switch from sucrose to high-fructose-corn-syrup/(HFCS) in the US food supply. There has been more fructose in HFCS than generally-recognized-as-safe/GRAS, which has contributed to unprecedented excess-free-fructose/(unpaired-fructose) in foods/beverages. Average- per-capita excess-free-fructose, from HFCS, began exceeding dosages/(5-10 g) that trigger fructose-malabsorption in the early 1980's. Fructose malabsorption contributes to gut-dysbiosis and gut-in-situ-fructosylation…

Effect of Setting Time on Viscosity Stability of Xanthan Gum- and Starch-Based Thickened Beverages for Patients with Dysphagia: Comparison of IDDSI Syringe Flow Test and Line-Spread Test.

Because the viscosity of thickened beverages prepared with thickeners gradually changes before consumption, achieving their desired viscosity is important for managing dysphagia. This study aimed to investigate the viscosity changes of thickened beverages (water, orange juice, and milk) prepared with xanthan gum (XG)- and starch-based commercial thickeners over time using the syringe flow test (SFT) and line-spread test (LST). The LST values of beverages stabilized more quickly (≤1.5 h) than the SFT values (2.0∼3.5 h) at level 2 (mildly thick), whereas the opposite finding was observed at leve…

The association of pure fruit juice, sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit consumption with asthma prevalence in adolescents growing up from 11 to 20 years: The PIAMA birth cohort study.

Pure fruit juice is comparable to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) with respect to its sugar and fructose content. However, it also contains favorable components like polyphenols. From this perspective, pure fruit juice is more comparable with whole fruit. SSBs have been associated with higher asthma risk, while whole fruit consumption has been associated with lower prevalence of asthma (symptoms). Associations with pure fruit juice have been rarely studied. Therefore, we studied the associations of consumption of pure fruit juice, SSBs and whole fruit with asthma prevalence in 3046 children o…

Simple method for the simultaneous quantification of medium-chain fatty acids and ethyl hexanoate in alcoholic beverages by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector: development of a direct injection method.

Free medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) can negatively influence the fermentation process and taste quality in alcoholic beverages. Ethyl hexanoate is important in providing a fruit-like flavour to drinks, particularly in Japanese sake. In this study, we developed a direct injection method for a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector following the semi-purification of chemical components, such as esters, alcohols and MCFAs in alcoholic beverages. Evaluation of MCFAs by this method gave a limit of detection on the order of sub-ppm and relative standard deviations less than 10% in standard s…
