Sex differences in sleep and alcohol consumption outcomes following a digital insomnia intervention.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep is a well-established risk factor for heavy drinking, and evidence suggests that sleep could serve as a potential treatment target for reducing alcohol consumption. The relationship between poor sleep and problematic drinking appears to be stronger among females, but no studies to date have assessed sex differences in alcohol consumption following insomnia treatment. Here, we combine the samples from two clinical trials to investigate sex differences in the effects of a digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (Sleep Healthy Using the Internet; SHUTi) on sleep a

Alcohol and cardiovascular health.

The substantial medical risks of heavy alcohol drinking as well as the existence of a safe drinking limit have been evident for centuries. Modern epidemiologic studies also show lower risk of both morbidity and mortality among lighter drinkers. Defining "heavy" as ≥3 standard drinks per day, the alcohol-mortality relationship is a J-curve with risk highest for heavy drinkers, lowest for light drinkers and intermediate for abstainers. A number of non-cardiovascular and cardiovascular problems contribute to the increased mortality risk of heavier drinkers. The lower risk of light drinkers is due

Alcohol use and behaviors in women long-distance race participants reporting a history of bulimia and/or anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship between a reported a history of an eating disorder, a history of problem alcohol behavior and curren … ers did not report either increased current alcohol consumption or occasions of drinking, including binge drinking (five or more drinks in one episode). CONCLUSIONS: Women racers reporting a history of bulimia nervosa are more likely to report a history of problem behaviors with alcohol but not differences in current alcohol consumptions from that reported by o …

Prevalence of prenatal drinking assessed at an urban public hospital and a suburban private hospital.

BACKGROUND: Although the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) varies within the population, few data are available concerning variation in the prevalence of prenatal drinking. METHODS: Postpartum women delivering singleton infants at two Atlanta hospitals in 1993 or 1994 were interviewed. Those delivering infants who were small for gestational age (SGA) (n = 638) were over-sampled relative to those delivering infants with birth weights that were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (n = 247). The prevalence of prenatal drinking was estimated as a weighted average of reports from mother

A brief motivational interview in a pediatric emergency department, plus 10-day telephone follow-up, increases attempts to quit drinking among youth and young adults who screen positive for problematic drinking.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents in their late teens and early 20s have the highest alcohol consumption in the United States; binge drinking peaks at age 21-25 years. Underage drinking is associated with many negative consequences, including academic problems and risk of intentional and unintentional injuries. This study tested the effectiveness of pediatric emergency department (PED) screening and brief intervention to reduce alcohol consumption and associated risks. METHODS: A three-group randomized assignment trial was structured to test differences between intervention (I) and standard assessed co…

ALDH2*2 and peer drinking in East Asian college students.

BACKGROUND: The ALDH2*2 allele (A-allele) at rs671 is more commonly carried by Asians and is associated with alcohol-related flushing, a strong adverse reaction to alcohol that is protective against drinking. Social factors, such as having friends who binge drink, also contribute to drinking in Asian youth. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the interplay between ALDH2*2, peer drinking, and alcohol consumption in college students. We hypothesized that the relationship between ALDH2*2 and standard grams of ethanol per month would vary based on the level of peer drinking. METHODS: Subjects (N = 3

Associations between alcohol and cocaine use in a sample of problem-drinking employees.

Increases in cocaine use have created a new and challenging cohort of problem drinkers with dual or multiple addictions. As part of a randomized trial comparing alternative alcoholism treatments at a 10,000-employee industrial plant, we interviewed 224 new alcoholic clients of an employee assistance program (EAP); 40% used cocaine during the 6 months just prior to EAP intake. Compared to employees reporting no recent cocaine use, the cocaine users were younger, less often married and reported heavier drinking and more alcohol-related problems, on the job and off. Even after controlling for dem

Alcohol Harms, Injuries, and Health: Clinical Implications for Lifestyle Medicine.

Alcohol is a well-known risk factor for premature morbidity and mortality. Health care providers have an important role in prevention efforts by identifying alcohol use disorders and supporting efforts to reduce binge drinking, conducting screening and counseling patients, and strengthening state and local policies. This article identifies alcohol harms that contribute to ill health, reviews recent and updated alcohol use guidelines, reviews the evidence for the relationship between alcohol use and injuries, identifies knowledge gaps, and suggests some pertinent roles for health care providers…

Religiosity as a Substance Use Protective Factor Among Female College Students.

Research exists about religiosity as a substance use protective factor. However, there is little attention of this issue regarding Israeli female college students. Undergraduate religious and secular students were studied. Religious students reported lower last month tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and non-medical prescription drug use. Secular females who smoked, missed class because of party habits and reported easy access to cannabis had a higher probability of binge drinking. This study contributes to knowledge about religiosity and college student substance use, and it provides useful informat…

Sex differences in the relationship between alcohol-associated smoking urge and behavior: a pilot study.

This study examined sex differences in alcohol-associated smoking urge and smoking patterns to elucidate factors contributing to the co-use of alcohol and cigarettes. Participants were 39 (22M, 17F) binge-drinking tobacco chippers. Although men and women showed similar alcohol-smoking patterns and similar alcohol-induced smoking urges, a positive association between these factors was observed only in men. The lack of relationship in women suggests that co-use of these substances may be due to exteroceptive factors beyond the pharmacological effects of alcohol potentiating smoking urge.

Two cases of acute rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria and high levels of serum enzyme are presented. The first patient developed acute renal insufficiency in the context of a binge and heavy alcohol drinking lasting several days. He was treated with haemodialysis for three weeks, and survived. The second patient developed rhabdomyolysis and heavy myoglobinuria after playing squash vigorously. Forced mannitol-alkaline diuresis therapy for prophylaxis against hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis was performed. He did not develop renal failure. Acute binge alcohol increases risk of arrhythmias and myocardial fibrosis in a mouse model of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited heart disease characterized by myocardial inflammation and fibrosis, ventricular dysfunc … h via the loss of nuclear HMGB1, and extensive myocardial fibrosis. These findings demonstrate that binge drinking may serve as an environmental factor that contributes to disease progression in subjects with ACM, highlighting the need for clinical awareness regarding alcohol use in this vulnerable population.

Binge drinking was defined as five or more drinks (≥61 g of alcohol) per episode for men and as four or more drinks (≥41 g of alcohol) per episode for women. The frequency of binge-like ethanol exposure bidirectionally regulates hippocampal mGlu-LTD via synaptic mechanisms and this effect is reversed by minocycline.

Alcohol addiction may begin in young adults through binge drinking (BD) with its frequency as key criterion. In rodents, BD impairs memory and hippocampal synaptic plasticity on the short term and induced neuroinflammation. Memory impairments may persist into adulthood, whereas long-lasting disturbances in hippocampus synaptic plasticity have not been documented. Moreover, the impact of BD frequency on such disturbances and the potential of anti-inflammatory agents to reverse BD-induced alterations remain unclear. Using hippocampal slices from male rats subjected to eight binge-like episodes d…
