From research to clinical practice: a systematic review of the implementation of psychological interventions for chronic headache in adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions have been proved to be effective in chronic headache (CH) in adults. Nevertheless, no data exist about their actual implementation into standard clinical settings. We aimed at critically depicting the current application of psychological interventions for CH into standard care exploring barriers and facilitators to their implementation. Secondarily, main outcomes of the most recent psychological interventions for CH in adults have been summarized. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review through PubMed and PsycINFO in the time range 2008-2018. A qualit

Auditory Biofeedback Gait Training in Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) develops in a large majority of patients with lateral ankle sprain (LAS), who often experience recurring injuries, residual feelings of instability, and abnormal neuromuscular patterns. Specifically, gait alterations are common in those with CAI and considered a contributing factor to poor long-term ankle joint health. Yet, there are no evidence-based gait-training protocols targeted to improve biomechanics, which may improve long-term outcomes related to ankle joint health and patient satisfaction. OBJECTIVE: This study protocol introduces a progre

State-Space Modeling of Real-Time Visual Biofeedback and Late-Stance Belt-Speed Modulation for Quantifying Error- and Use-Dependent Learning of Gait Propulsion in Individuals Post-Stroke.

This study developed an exploratory, model-constrained state-space model to characterize how real-time visual biofeedback (VB) and late-stance, phase-specific belt modulation (propulsion-facilitating, PF) were associated with improvements in affected-limb propulsion following stroke. Twelve individuals with chronic stroke participated in a single-session experiment conducted on the Adaptive Propulsion Enhancement eXperience (APEX) system, which utilizes an instrumented split-belt treadmill. The system continuously displays the affected-limb anterior ground reaction force (AGRF) while modulatin

Effects of daily heart rate variability biofeedback practice on the amygdala's structural covariance network.

The neurovisceral integration model posits that the reciprocal interaction between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex (PFC) influences heart rate variability (HRV) and emotion modulation. Emerging evidence also suggests that HRV influences brain regions involved in emotion regulation. Building on previous functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) studies, the present study employed structural covariance analysis to examine the effects of HRV biofeedback intervention on the structural covariance between the amygdala and cortical regions. Investigating the covariation between the amygdala and cortica

A self-powered implantable and bioresorbable electrostimulation device for biofeedback bone fracture healing.

Electrostimulation has been recognized as a promising nonpharmacological treatment in orthopedics to promote bone fracture healing. However, clinical applications have been largely limited by the complexity of equipment operation and stimulation implementation. Here, we present a self-powered implantable and bioresorbable bone fracture electrostimulation device, which consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator for electricity generation and a pair of dressing electrodes for applying electrostimulations directly toward the fracture. The device can be attached to irregular tissue surfaces and pro

Pelvic floor biofeedback therapy in children: Assessment of symptom scores in responders and non-responders.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic Floor Biofeedback Therapy (PFBT) can be an effective treatment for pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Due to differing perceptions of efficacy and practice patterns, we sought to further evaluate PFBT in our practice. We hypothesized that PFBT results in quiescence of EMG activity during voiding and improves questionnaire scores in patients with LUTS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients undergoing PFBT and refined the analysis to females ≥6 years old with ≥2 sessions with completed voiding questionnaires pre- and post-treatment, active EMG during

Real-time biofeedback can increase and decrease vertical ground reaction force, knee flexion excursion, and knee extension moment during walking in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often exhibit a "stiffened knee strategy" or an excessively extended knee during gait, characterized by lesser knee flexion excursion and peak internal knee extension moment (KEM). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of real-time biofeedback (RTBF) cuing an acute change in peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during the first 50% of the stance phase of walking gait on: (1) root mean square error (RMSE) between actual vGRF and RTBF target vGRF; (2) perceived difficulty; and (3) knee biomechanics. Defecating disorders: a common cause of constipation in women.

Defecating disorders are a common and complex problem. There are a range of anatomical and functional bowel abnormalities that can lead to this condition. Treatment is difficult and needs a multidisciplinary approach. First line treatment for defecating disorders is conservative. For those that fail conservative treatment, some may respond to surgical therapy but with variable results. The aim of this review is to offer an overview of defecating disorders as well as provide an algorithm on how to diagnose and treat them with the help of a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach.

The effect of operant-conditioning balance training on the down-regulation of spinal H-reflexes in a spastic patient.

Spasticity in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients has primarily been treated pharmacologically. However, there is increasing evidence that physical rehabilitation can help manage hyper-excitability of reflexes (hyperreflexia), which is a primary contributor to spasticity. In the present study, one chronic hemiparetic stroke patient operantly conditioned the soleus H-reflex while training on a balance board for two weeks. The results showed a minimal decrease in the Hmax-Mmax ratio for both the affected and unaffected limb, indicating that the H-reflex was not significantly altered with trainin
