The importance of prenatal factors in childhood blindness in India.

The causes of visual loss in 1411 children attending schools for the blind in different geographical areas in India are described. Ninety-th … ountries and in the poorest developing countries. This suggests that strategies to combat childhood blindness in India need to address concurrently both preventable and treatable causes. The need for aetiological studies, particularly on anophthalmos and microphthalmos, is highlighted.

Survey of blindness in rural communities of south-western Nigeria.

A population based survey of rural communities in the Akinlalu-Ashipa ward of Ife North Local Government in Osun State, Nigeria, was conducted to determine the prevalence and causes of blindness. 2921 inhabitants were screened by a random cluster sample technique, out of whom 27 were blind in both eyes. The overall prevalence rate of blindness (best corrected visual acuity less than 3/60 in the better eye) was found to be 0.9% (95% confidence interval 0.84-0.96%). The rate of blindness increased with age, especially from age 60. The major causes of blindness were cataract and its sequelae (48.…

Acquired unilateral night blindness associated with a negative electroretinogram waveform.

PURPOSE: The authors performed clinical, electrophysiologic, psychophysical, and immunologic studies in a patient who presented with an acquired night blindness in one eye to better define the clinical and functional changes in this rare disorder. METHODS: In addition to an ophthalmologic examination, the patient underwent the measurement of electroretinogram responses, dark-adapted thresholds using a Tübingen perimeter (Oculus, Tubingen, Germany), color vision assessment, kinetic visual-field testing using a Goldman perimeter, and immunologic testing to determine if the serum contained autoa…

Chronic cyanide poisoning in relation to blindness and tropical neuropathy.

Within a group of 20 patients showing optic atrophy and macula degeneration, 14 patients could be examined for neurological and audiometric defects. In 6 patients neurological signs and symptoms were observed. Nine patients reported loss of hearing and in 3 of them a severe perceptive deafness was seen in the audiogram. In 3 of the 14 patients a combination of severe neurologic and audiologic symptoms developed and in two of them a high thiocyanate concentration in serum was observed. The occurrence of perceptive deafness and posterior column sensory loss in the lower extremities in four of th

Anesthetically blocked optic nerve conduction in congenital stationary night blindness.

It has been hypothesized that the negative configuration of the electroretinogram (ERG) in congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) may change to a positive configuration following loss of the inhibitory function of the optic nerve centrifugal fibers. In order to study this hypothesis, the ERGs before and after blocking optic nerve conduction by retrobulbar anesthesia were recorded in a patient with CSNB, who had retinal breaks and was being treated with cryopexy under retrobulbar anesthesia. After complete blockade of the optic nerve conduction induced by retrobulbar anesthesia, the ERG s…

Blindness following paranasal sinus surgery: a report of two cases.

Two cases of blindness following paranasal sinus surgery are presented. The first patient, a 38-year old man, developed a delayed massive haemorrhage, after bilateral sphenoethmoidectomy. This hemorrhage could be stopped by electric cauterisation under endoscopical control. During this reintervention the patient developed total blindness of his right eye, and a restriction of the inferotemporal left visual field. The second patient, a 10-year old girl, developed, after bilateral spheno-ethmoidectomy for isolated sphenoiditis, total blindness of the left eye and paralysis of the ipsilateral ext…

Cortical blindness in postpartum preeclampsia progressing to eclampsia: case report.

A 23-year-old woman who had an uneventful prenatal course and normal delivery developed severe, generalized headache and blurred vision on postpartum day four. The patient was noted to have generalized hyperreflexia and sustained ankle clonus. The blood pressure was 170/100 mm Hg, there was no edema, and the urine showed trace proteinuria. The visual disturbance rapidly progressed to complete blindness with preserved pupillary reactions. The patient then had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure lasting about one minute. Treatment was initiated with intravenous diazepam and phenytoin, and there w…

Childhood blindness in the Republic of Ireland: a national survey.

We completed a national study of blindness in children under 16. Approximately 80% of the blind children (that is, with vision of 3/60 or less) in the Republic of Ireland (172 children) were seen, 93 males and 79 females. The survey was carried out between July 1989 and June 1990. It is the first such study to be carried out. Ninety seven (56%) children had lesions due to factors acting before the perinatal period. Of these, 28 (16% of the total number surveyed) had lesions due to genetic causes; 69 (40%) had lesions due to factors operating in the prenatal period other than genetic factors. F…

[Blindness caused by central artery occlusion following nasal septum correction].

Visual loss following intranasal injections is extremely rare. A case report of blindness in the only seeing eye after infiltration of the septal mucosa with local anaesthetics and vasopressin is presented. The pathological mechanism and the relationship between different surgical procedures and visual loss are analysed and discussed. Some rules are given to prevent this complication.

[The causes of blindness by corneal diseases in 3,499 cases].

The chief causes of corneal blindness was found to be corneal inflammatory diseases and injury in 83.4% of the 3,499 cases (3,993 eyes) of corneal blindness that presented themselves during 1983-1985 at the authors' hospital. The important diseases in order of frequency were herpes simplex keratitis (42.8%), bacterial keratitis (17.4%), corneal injuries (15.7%), keratomalacia (10.0%), and trachoma (3.8%). Patients of the latter two diseases were mostly old cases. The authors discussed the incidence of corneal diseases and their prevention and treatment.

Squamous cell carcinoma causing blindness and ophthalmoplegia in a cat.

Ophthalmoplegia and blindness caused by squamous cell carcinoma were reported in a cat. Unilateral functional deficits of cranial nerves II, III, IV, and VI and of the sympathetic nerve supply caused blindness, complete ophthalmoplegia, and Horner syndrome. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a proliferating bony lesion associated with the right tympanic bulla, right temporal bone, right side of the mandible, and left frontal bone. A focal area of bony destruction involved the right sphenoid bone. The cat was euthanatized and necropsied. Squamous cell carcinoma was identified invading…

[An epidemiological survey of blindness and low vision in Chongqing].

An epidemiological survey of blindness and low vision in Chongqing showed that in a random sample of 13,832, there were 62 cases of bilateral blindness and 97 cases of bilateral low vision, the prevalences being 0.45% (male 0.38%, female 0.52%) and 0.70% (male 0.50%, female 0.90%) respectively. The prevalences in people over 60 years of age were significantly higher. The important blinding diseases were cataract, infectious keratitis, corneal turbidity, glaucoma, trachoma, and ametropia/amblyopia.

Blindness from intracranial tumors: a clinical analysis of 60 cases.

We analyzed the cause of blindness in 60 people with intracranial tumors. Twenty-three (38.3%) had binocular blindness, thirty-seven (61.2%) had monocular blindness. The most common tumors producing blindness were pituitary chromophobe adenomas and craniopharyngiomas. Blindness in this series resulted usually from intracranial tumors, which directly or indirectly involved the optic nerve or optic chiasma. These tumors were sometimes misdiagnosed when these patients were first examined by physicians. Specific ophthalmic examinations should permit the diagnosis to be made earlier.

Blindness in schoolchildren: importance of heredity, congenital cataract, and prematurity.

Of 99 children in the Royal Blind School, Edinburgh (which serves Scotland and part of N E England), 15 had optic atrophy (hydrocephalus 4, intracranial haemorrhage 2, prematurity 2, fetal distress 2, birth asphyxia 2, cerebral atrophy 1, cardiac arrest during hernia operation 1, and leukaemia 1). Fourteen had congenital cataract, 12 congenital retinal aplasia (Leber's congenital amaurosis) and 11 retinopathy of prematurity. There were small numbers in many other diagnostic categories, including three with non-accidental head injury. Mental retardation, spasticity, and nystagmus were frequent

Congenital stationary night blindness with myopia: a clinico-pathologic study.

The left eye of a 77 year old male patient was enucleated because of absolute glaucoma. This eye showed subnormal electroretinogram (ERG) an … ormal type ERG following the loss of inhibitory mechanisms. Thus we propose that the cause of night blindness in congenital stationary cases with Schubert-Bornschein type ERG may be related to the mechanisms inhibitory to cells of the bipolar layer.
