Effects of ozone on lung and somatic growth. Pair fed rats after ozone exposure and recovery periods.

Minor differences in lung growth and development during childhood have been considered as a potential cause of rapid decline in pulmonary function in adulthood. Inhalation of ozone commonly causes changes in both body weight and lung volumes, which complicates interpretation of any changes in lung growth. The effects of ozone on lung growth were studied in rats which were pair fed. This technique permitted comparison of ozone-exposed and filtered-air control rats of the same body weight and body size as well as age and sex. Exposure was to filtered air or to 0.64 or 0.96 ppm ozone (UV standard

Impact on quality of life with affirmative feedback on weight loss after gastrectomy.

This study investigated the feasibility of improving post-gastrectomy satisfaction/quality of life (QoL) of gastric cancer survivors by readjusting their expectations through patient interviews. Weight loss after gastric cancer surgery is common, and a change in the departmental policy helped in providing cancer survivors with an alternative interpretation of lost weight. Under the new policy, a group of patients who were preoperatively overweight or obese were provided with affirmative feedback, despite their postoperative weight loss. Optimizing Obesity Management With GLP-1 Agonist Medication Through Mobile Health Technology, Nutrition Therapy, and Progressive Strength Training: A Retrospective Program Review.

BACKGROUND: GLP-1 RAs are effective in treating obesity; however, they typically result in significant loss of skeletal muscle mass. Real-world evidence to inform systematic guidelines and clinical implementation for preserving skeletal muscle mass and reducing cardiometabolic risk with lifestyle modifications on GLP-1 RAs remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the TouchCare Method, a lifestyle intervention incorporating nutrition and exercise with GLP-1 RAs, for improving body composition and cardiometabolic risk. METHODS: A retrospective chart review included

The effects of drugs used to treat obesity on the autonomic nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: Body fatness is partly under hypothalamic control with effector limbs, which include the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In previous studies we have shown, in both obese and never-obese subjects, that weight increase leads to increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic activity, whereas weight decrease leads to decreased sympathetic and increased parasympathetic activity. We now report on the involvement of such ANS mechanisms in the action of anti-obesity drugs, independent of change in weight. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Normal weight males (

Making weight makes sense: relative performance gains after rapid weight loss in powerlifting: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight loss (RWL) is a common strategy among competitive powerlifters aiming to qualify for lower weight categories and improve competitive advantage. However, the effects of RWL followed by short-term recovery on maximal strength performance remain unclear. This study aimed to examine whether a ~ 5% RWL protocol followed by a 2-hour recovery period affects changes in maximal and relative strength performance in trained male powerlifters. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was registered in the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12622000924752

Comparison of weight loss induced by daily caloric restriction versus intermittent fasting (DRIFT) in individuals with obesity: study protocol for a 52-week randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The standard of care for treating overweight and obesity is daily caloric restriction (DCR). While this approach produces modest weight loss, adherence to DCR declines over time and weight regain is common. Intermittent fasting (IMF) is an alternative dietary strategy for reducing energy intake (EI) that involves >60% energy restriction on 2-3 days per week, or on alternate days, with habitual intake on fed days. While numerous studies have evaluated IMF as a weight loss strategy, there are several limitations including lack of a standard-of-care DCR control, failure to provide gui

Early change in lean tissue mass after peritoneal dialysis: prevalence, risk factors, and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Muscle wasting has been linked to negative clinical outcomes in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, it remains unclear how early changes in muscle mass after the initiation of PD affects the clinical outcome. This study aimed to identify factors influencing changes in lean tissue mass (LTM) over six months in new PD patients and to assess their prognostic significance. METHODS: We conducted a study of 90 new PD patients. Over a six-month period, we recorded changes in LTM and adipose tissue mass (ATM) using bioimpedance spectrometry. Outcome measures included pa

Mitochondrial changes and carnitine status in fasting rats.

To elucidate mitochondrial morphology and related pathophysiology in the fasting state, liver mitochondrial area, plasma levels of carnitine and non-esterified fatty acids were measured in fed (N = 30) and fasted for 5 days (N = 28) rats. The rats were divided into three groups according to body weight: 100 g-group (aged 5 weeks), 200 g-group (aged 7-8 weeks), 400 g-group (aged 15-16 weeks). Electron microscopy of the liver revealed mitochondrial enlargement in fasted rats. There were significant differences in mitochondrial area measured by digitizer, between fasted groups with 100 g and 200

Weight loss of 5% or more predicts loss of fat-free mass during palliative chemotherapy in patients with advanced cancer: a pilot study.

The cutoff value of critical weight loss is still subject of discussion. In this pilot study, we investigated whether ≥ 5% weight loss in the past year predicts changes in nutritional status in patients with advanced cancer during treatment with palliative chemotherapy. In 20 patients with advanced cancer undergoing palliative (combination) chemotherapy, body weight, fat free mass (FFM), and cachexia were measured prior to the start and at 9 wk of treatment. History of weight loss was used to test differences in development of nutritional parameters during chemotherapy with use of independent

Post-mortem size and structure of the human carotid body.

The weights of the carotid bodies have been measured in an unselected group of 40 successive cases coming for routine necropsy. Although the mean weight of the carotid bodies was higher in those subjects with emphysema or Pickwickian syndrome, this difference did not reach a level of statistical significance. Nevertheless, in a group of two patients with cor pulmonale and one with the Pickwickian syndrome the mean weight of the carotid bodies was significantly higher than that of the rest. Such observations would be consistent with enlargement of the glomic tissue in response to chronic hypoxi

Glucose Restriction Plus Refeeding in Vitro Induce Changes of the Human Adipocyte Secretome with an Impact on Complement Factors and Cathepsins.

Adipose tissue is a major endocrine organ capable of secreting adipokines with a role in whole-body metabolism. Changes in the secretome profile during the development of obesity is suspected to contribute to the risk of health complications such as those associated with weight regain after weight loss. However, the number of studies on weight regain is limited and secretome changes during weight regain have hardly been investigated. In an attempt to generate leads for in vivo studies, we have subjected human Simpson Golabi Behmel Syndrome adipocytes to glucose restriction (GR) followed by ref

Body composition changes and their relationship with obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms, severity: The Sleeping Well Trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity share a complex bi-directional relationship as location of body fat and changes in regional body composition may be more important for OSA improvement than changes in total body weight only. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-month weight loss intervention for adults newly diagnosed with moderate-severe OSA and obesity on regional body composition. The secondary aims evaluated the relationship between changes in OSA symptoms and severity and anthropometry and regional body composition during the first 12-months

Weight trajectories in aging humanized APOE mice with translational validity to human Alzheimer's risk population: A retrospective analysis.

Translational validity of mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is variable. Because change in weight is a well-documented precursor of AD, we investigated whether diversity of human AD risk weight phenotypes was evident in a longitudinally characterized cohort of 1,196 female and male humanized APOE (hAPOE) mice, monitored up to 28 months of age which is equivalent to 81 human years. Autoregressive Hidden Markov Model (AHMM) incorporating age, sex, and APOE genotype was employed to identify emergent weight trajectories and phenotypes. In the hAPOE-AD mouse cohort, five distinct weight traj
