Production of esters from the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium often focuses on butyl butyrate, leaving acetone as an undesired product. Addition of butyrate is also often needed because ABE fermentation does not produce enough butyrate. Phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs) are multifunctional peptide toxins produced by many staphylococcal strains. PSMs have received much recent attention, owing to multiple reports underscoring their importance for staphylococcal pathogenesis. Members of the PSM family may be strongly cytolytic to neutrophils and other cell types; promote inflammatory, receptor-mediated responses in several human cell types; and contribute to biofilm structuring and detachment. The synthesis and structure-activity relationships of a series of threo-1-(aryloxy)-3-(alkylamino)butan-2-ols are discussed. These compounds are less potent beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists than the corresponding 1-(aryloxy)-3-(alkylamino)propan-2-ols. The data presented indicate that, unlike the arylethanolamine series, substitution of an alkyl group on the carbon atom alpha to the amino function on the oxypropanolamine side chain does not necessarily lead to enhanced vascular (beta 2) selectivity.

Upcycling agricultural byproducts into high-value functional ingredients represents a sustainable strategy for environmental preservation. In this study, we show how electrochemically mediated bioconversion can greatly increase the co-production of 1,3-propanediol and organic acids from glycerol in an industrial bioprocess using a Clostridum pasteurianum mutant.
