[Gliadomorphin, casomorphin, and intestinal fatty acid binding protein in children with autism spectrum disorders].

Diet therapy for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remains one of the most popular alternative therapies. despite conflicting opinions regarding the effectiveness of the dietary approach. According to the theory of exorphin intoxication, gluten and casein peptides enter the bloodstream through the mucous membrane of the small intestine, penetrate the blood-brain barrier and affect the neurons of the cerebral cortex. The wellknown hypothesis of the relationship between autism and gluten intolerance is based on this theory. The aim of this work was to study the correlation between the blood concen

Influence of source and quantity of protein on the development of immunity and resistance to African trypanosomiasis.

Although it is well documented that severe protein deprivation inhibits the development of the immune response and exacerbates certain infections, little has been done to study the effects of native diets on endemic diseases or immunity. Therefore, protein-restricted diets were formulated for mice to mimic the sources and amounts measured in human diets of the Batouri region of Cameroon, endemic for African trypanosomiasis. Weanling C57BL/6 female mice were fed a diet that contained 73% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein. The sources of protein were all plant (cornmeal), all a

Contemporary management of white spot lesions following orthodontic treatment.

White spot lesions (WSLs) are a frequent complication of orthodontic treatment. A WSL represents an area of initial surface demineralisation and occurs most commonly due to an excess dietary intake of fermentable carbohydrates and poor plaque control. Management options include the application of topical agents such as fluoride treatments, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate, BioMin, and self-assembling peptide P11-4. Resin infiltration to mask lesions by altering enamel optics is a further option. This article provides an update for general dental practitioners and specialists o

Body temperature responsive capsules templated from Pickering emulsion for thermally triggered release of β-carotene.

In recent years, functional foods with lipophilic nutraceutical ingredients are gaining more and more attention because of its potential healthy and commercial value, and developing of various bioderived food-grade particles for use in fabrication of Pickering emulsion has attracted great attentions. Herein, the bio-originated sodium caseinate-lysozyme (Cas-Lyz) complex particles were firstly designed to be used as a novel interfacial emulsifier for Pickering emulsions. Pickering emulsions of various food oils were all successfully stabilized by the Cas-Lyz particles without addition of any sy

Water-soluble Moringa oleifera Seed Lectin Exhibits Monoaminergic Pathway-linked Anti-depressive-like Effects in Mice.

OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the anti-depressive-like (anti-immobility) effect of a lectin from Moringa oleifera seeds (WSMoL) in mice. METHODS: To evaluate an acute effect, the animals were treated with WSMoL (1, 2, and 4 mg/kg, i.p.) 30 min before the tail suspension test (TST). To investigate the involvement of monoaminergic and nitrergic signaling, the mice were pre-treated with selective antagonists. The role of the WSMoL carbohydrate-recognizing domain (CRD) was verified using previous blockage with casein (0.5 mg/mL). The subacute anti-immobility effect was also evaluated

Suppressor-cell activity in coeliac disease induced by alpha-gliadin, a dietary antigen.

The wheat protein antigen alpha-gliadin, a fraction derived from gluten of molecular weight 60 000, activated suppressor cells from patients with coeliac disease but not from normal subjects or patients with Crohn's disease. Two other dietary antigens, casein and beta-lactoglobulin, failed to produce suppressor-cell activation. Since this phenomenon appears to be specific to coeliac disease, it may be of pathogenetic significance.

Detection of bovine milk-, but likely not soy-derived, peptides in human milk after maternal consumption of bovine milk and soy beverage: a randomized, cross-over, dietary intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Food-borne allergens in human milk (HM) may cause allergic responses in HM-fed infants, but variability of allergen transfer complicates recommendations for individuals nursing food-allergic infants. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify bovine- and soy-derived peptides in HM after maternal elimination and reintroduction of bovine milk (BM) and soy beverage (SB). METHODS: In this randomized, cross-over, dietary intervention trial, 38 lactating participants underwent 2 study phases, each including a 5-day diet elimination, 3-day diet intervention, and 2-day washout. Each diet interventi

Effect of heat and homogenization on in vitro digestion of milk.

Central to commercial fluid milk processing is the use of high temperature, short time (HTST) pasteurization to ensure the safety and quality of milk, and homogenization to prevent creaming of fat-containing milk. Ultra-high-temperature sterilization is also applied to milk and is typically used to extend the shelf life of refrigerated, specialty milk products or to provide shelf-stable milk. The structures of the milk proteins and lipids are affected by processing but little information is available on the effects of the individual processes or sequences of processes on digestibility. In this

Characteristics of thyroid function in experimental protein malnutrition.

Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of protein malnutrition on thyroid function. Resting oxygen consumption and serum concentrations of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured and correlated with thyroid histology, gain in weight, feed efficiency and carcass energy content in male rats fed isoenergetic diets ad libitum containing 22% (control) or 8% (protein malnourished, PM) casein for 28 or 32 days postweaning. A third group was pair-fed to the PM rats with the control diet. In experiment 2 additional groups were pair-fed to t

Pathological changes in muscle caused by haemorrhagic and proteolytic factors from Bothrops jararaca snake venom.

Haemorrhagic factor HF2 and bothropasin, two metalloproteins isolated from the venom of Bothrops jararaca, caused haemorrhage followed by myonecrosis and arterial necrosis after i.m. injection in mice. The effects of HF2 were qualitatively similar to those of bothropasin and crude B. jararaca venom, but its potency was about 20 times higher. The haemorrhagic and necrotizing actions of these components are unrelated to their proteolytic activity on casein.

Characterization of Streptomyces sp. KB1 and its cultural optimization for bioactive compounds production.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have determined that CYP3A and multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) polymorphisms can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of amlodipine in both healthy subjects and those with early hypertensive renal disease. In the current study, our objective was to analyze the association between the CYP3A4*1G, CYP3A5*3, and MDR1 C3435T gene polymorphisms and the antihypertensive efficacy of amlodipine in hypertensive patients after renal transplantation. Materials: Blood samples were collected from 76 patients on amlodipine therapy (5 mg/d). METHODS: The CYP3A4*1

Nutritional Provision of Iron Complexes by the Major Allergen Alt a 1 to Human Immune Cells Decreases Its Presentation.

Alternaria alternata is a common fungus strongly related with severe allergic asthma, with 80% of affected individuals being sensitized solely to its major allergen Alt a 1. Here, we assessed the function of Alt a 1 as an innate defense protein binding to micronutrients, such as iron-quercetin complexes (FeQ2), and its impact on antigen presentation in vitro. Binding of Alt a 1 to FeQ2 was determined in docking calculations. Recombinant Alt a 1 was generated, and binding ability, as well as secondary and quaternary structure, assessed by UV-VIS, CD, and DLS spectroscopy. Proteolytic functions

Artificial Diets with Altered Levels of Sulfur Amino Acids Induce Anticancer Activity in Mice with Metastatic Colon Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Sulfur-containing amino acids methionine (Met), cysteine (Cys) and taurine (Tau) are common dietary constituents with important cellular roles. Met restriction is already known to exert in vivo anticancer activity. However, since Met is a precursor of Cys and Cys produces Tau, the role of Cys and Tau in the anticancer activity of Met-restricted diets is poorly understood. In this work, we screened the in vivo anticancer activity of several Met-deficient artificial diets supplemented with Cys, Tau or both. Diet B1 (6% casein, 2.5% leucine, 0.2% Cys and 1% lipids) and diet B2B (6% casein, 5% glu

Ambient 1,2-propanediol exposure accelerates the degradation of lipids and amino acids in milk via allosteric effects and affects the utilization of nutrients containing amide bond.

The scandal of detecting 1, 2-propanediol (PL) in milk brought a crisis to the trust of consumers in the dairy industry, and the potential toxicity of PL has aroused the public concern about dietary exposure. A total of 200 pasteurized milk samples were collected from 15 regions, and the quantity of PL ranged between 0 and 0.31 g kg-1. Pseudo-targeted quantitative metabolomics integrated with proteomics demonstrated that PL enhanced the reduction of κ-casein, β-casein, and 107 substances (41 amines and 66 amides) containing amide bonds. Pathway enrichment and topological analysis indicated tha

Unraveling the Relationship between Milk Yield and Quality at the Test Day with Rumination Time Recorded by a PLF Technology.

The study aimed to estimate the components of rumination time (RT) variability recorded by a neck collar sensor and the relationship between RT and milk composition. Milk test day (TD) and RT data were collected from 691 cows in three farms. Daily RT data of each animal were averaged for 3, 7, and 10 days preceding the TD date (RTD). Variance component analysis of RTD, considering the effects of farm, cow, parity, TD date, and lactation phase, showed that a farm, followed by a cow, had major contributions to the total variability. The RT10 variable best performed on TD milk yield and quality r

Protein deficiency during Trichinella spiralis infection impairs lung immunity against newborn larvae.

The goal of this study was to analyse the effects of a protein-deficient (PD) diet on antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) in vitro against newborn larvae (NBL) of Trichinella spiralis in the lungs of infected rats. Two groups of weaning Wistar rats received a PD diet (6.5% casein) and other two received a control diet (C, 20% casein). After ten days, one group of each diet was infected (PDI and CI ) with muscle larvae. Lung tissue extracts (LTE) and lung cell suspension (LCS) were obtained. PDI had lower titres of anti-NBL antibodies in LTE than CI . In ADCC assays using contr
