AIM: This study compared the efficacy and patient acceptability of two methods of bowel preparation for flexible sigmoidoscopy.
METHODS: Patients attending for outpatient flexible sigmoidoscopy were prospectively randomized to receive one Fleet ready-to-use enema or 2 x 4 g glycerin suppositories, 2 h preprocedure. Patient and endoscopist questionnaires were used to compare the outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Few studies, to date, have investigated the relationship between self-damaging behavior and the presence of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in eating disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the axis I and II comorbidity in subjects with bulimia nervosa who report self-injurious behavior and/or suicide attempt.
METHODS: The subjects were 95 patients with purging type bulimia nervosa who underwent a clinical evaluation assessing the presence of self-injurious behavior and suicide attempts, comorbidity for axis I and II psychiatric disorders and temperament.

Colonic necrosis is an unusual complication after treatment of hyperkalemia with sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS, Kayexalate) in sorbitol. To increase awareness of this complication, we report a case of necrosis of the transverse colon in a patient given oral and rectal SPS-sorbitol for hyperkalemia. Constipation and the use of laxatives were investigated in patients with chronic cancer pain treated with oral morphine and transdermal fentanyl in an open sequential trial. Forty-six patients were treated with slow-release morphine 30-1000 mg/day for 6 days and 39 of these patients were switched to transdermal fentanyl 0.6-9.6 mg/day with a conversion ratio of 100:1. Two techniques for preparation of the colon for colonoscopy were compared in a controlled trial. Fifty patients given a low residue diet and the laxative Prepacol were compared with 50 patients given whole gut irrigation. Significantly more patients suffered from vomiting (P = 0.0005), shivering (P = 0.0062) and nausea (P = 0.031) following irrigation; in two cases the procedure had to be abandoned because of profuse vomiting.
