Health and fertility data were recorded in 32 southern Ontario Holstein herds over a period of two and a half years. During that time 2.6% (80/3123) of breedings were followed by a postbreeding infusion. Breedings were divided into groups according to the breeding number (first to fifth), age group (less than 3 yr, 3 to 5.9 yr, greater than or equal to 6 yr) and disease status of the reproductive tract (four groups). Calves (7) were exposed to antigens of Micropolyspora faeni by the aerosol route for 9 weeks. The humoral immune response of calves to M faeni antigens was studied; immunoglobulins (Ig) E, G1, G2, A, and M were measured weekly in serum and nasal secretions by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Intradermal injection of antigen was performed during the 6th and 9th weeks; responses were evaluated at 30 minutes, 6 to 8 hours, 24, and 48 hours after injection. The clinical, electrocardiographic and postmortem findings in five cattle affected by generalised glycogenosis type II are described. The chronic catheterisation of the amniotic sac of eight pregnant cows of 180 to 200 days gestational age is described using an indwelling catheter of polyvinyl tubing. Although strict asepsis was followed, the main problem encountered was preventing contaminant bacteria from overwhelming the fetus, causing its death. This was successfully achieved in four animals, three of which received a mixture of ampicillin and cloxacillin sodium intra-amniotically and parenterally in the dam. Daily sequential samples of amniotic fluid were readily obtained until just before fetal death.

Theileria sp occurs in cattle in Australia where Boophilus microplus is not present. Two species of ixodid ticks namely Haemaphysalis longicornis and H. bancrofti have been implicated as natural vectors. Of 10,362 cattle examined in Bangladesh, 4,368 (42.15%) harboured hydatid cysts. One to three-year-old cattle had the lowest (11.34%) and those over nine years old the highest (93.21%) infections. Organ involvement was as follows: liver 35.18%, lungs 32.02%, spleen 0.80%, heart 0.41%, kidney 0.25%, omentum 0.11% and both liver and lungs 31.20%. Fertile cysts occurred in 8.11%, sterile in 74.91%, calcified in 9.42%, suppurative in 6.04% and undeveloped in 1.51% of animals.

Microscopic lesions in cattle infected with the virus of the Neethling form of lumpy skin disease comprised a granulomatous reaction in the dermis and hypodermis which extended to the surrounding tissue. During the early stages of the lesions a vasculitis and lymphangitis with concomitant thrombosis and infarction resulted in necrosis and oedema. Albendazole in drench formulation was administered to calves 16 weeks after infection with 400 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. In separate experiments, albendazole at dose levels of 10 or 15 mg/kg reduced the fluke burden by 92.84 per cent and 95.0 per cent, respectively. In another experiment, a dose level of 7.5 mg/kg given once, twice with a two-week interval, or twice with a three-week interval reduced the mean fluke burden by 43.75 per cent, 72.29 per cent and 90 per cent, respectively.

Fourty-four Holstein Friesian cows diagnosed as having ovarian follicular cysts from rectal palpation of the ovaries and observation of estrous behavior were used for the present experiments. Of the 16 cows injected intramuscularly (i.m.) with 110 mg of depot-progestins containing 100 mg of 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate and 10 mg of progesterone in oil, 8 cows responded with conception with 103 +/- 53 days in average after the treatment. Efficient utilization of feed by ruminants is closely related to fermentation in the reticulum and rumen. A deficiency is long roughage ("structural material") may impair this fermentation and result in a low-milk fat syndrome. The relationship between intensity of production and the occurrence of hypomagnesaemia and grass tetany in dairy cattle was investigated from 1966-1970 at the Ellinbank Dairy Research Station, Warragul, Victoria. Hypomagnesaemia and/or grass tetany occurred in cows grazing at both high (3.2 cows/hectare) and low (2.2 cows/hectare) stocking rates over the four-year period.
