The Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus), comprising the river-dwelling surface fish and multiple independently evolved cave populations, has emerged as a powerful model for studying the complex interplay between genotype and environment in shaping organismal phenotypes including metabolism. Cavefish have adapted to the extreme conditions of subterranean life-marked by perpetual darkness and limited food availability-through a suite of phenotypes, including eye and pigment loss, enhanced sensory systems, altered sleep and feeding behaviors and remarkable metabolic remodeling. This Perspective br

We describe Gekko shiva sp. nov. from limestone cave and hills in Khlong Hat District, Sa Kaeo Province, eastern Thailand, near the border with Cambodia. The new species, a member of the subgenus Gekko, differs from all currently recognized Gekko species by the following combination of morphological characters and pattern: maximal known snout-vent length of 131.9 mm, lack of contact between nostrils and rostral, 28 or 29 interorbital scales between supraciliaries, 80-86 scale rows around midbody, 18 dorsal tubercle rows at midbody, 35-37 ventral scale rows at midbody, 9-12 precloacal pores in

A 51-year-old male presented with a rapidly growing right caruncular nodular lesion. Excisional biopsy performed elsewhere showed an apocrine adenocarcinoma of the caruncle with positive margins. Clinically, there was no obvious residual disease, mapping biopsies were negative, and cryotherapy of the surgical base was performed. The tumor recurred both anteriorly in the lower fornix and deeper in the anterior orbit a year later. These were surgically excised with adjuvant radiotherapy (60 Gy in 30 fractions). Unfortunately, the tumor continued to recur posteriorly to progressively first involve

Three studies have reported trigeminal hypesthesia following temporal lobe resection. However, no cases of hypesthesia have been reported following laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). We report the first case of trigeminal hypesthesia as a complication of otherwise successful LITT in a patient with drug-resistant epilepsy. A 58-year-old male with drug-resistant epilepsy secondary to a left parahippocampal gyrus multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor underwent biopsy and MRI-guided LITT. Immediately postoperatively, the patient reported hypesthesia in the left V3 distribution, inclu

Histoplasmosis is an endemic mycosis in Colombia. Here we present two cases in the Cauca department, to indicate the clinical impact of histoplasmosis delayed diagnosis and treatment when its epidemiology is unknown. Informed consent was requested to review patients’ medical records and case report publication. The first case was a patient diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus and generalized presence of skin lesions. Initially, these lesions were diagnosed as herpes, but a postmortem diagnosis confirmed histoplasmosis through fungal cultures of tissues from the skin lesions. The second

Skull base osteomas (SBOs) are benign tumors that are frequently detected on radiographic images by coincidence. They are known for being slow-growing tumors and rarely symptomatic. The therapeutic approach for SBOs can differ substantially. Depending on the symptoms, size, and location of the tumor, this can range from serial observation to vigorous surgical extirpation. Clival osteoma is extremely rare. We report a case of clival osteoma, causing intractable trigeminal neuralgia due to the pressure effect on the trigeminal nerve at Meckel's cave. We also provide a review of pertinent literat

There are an estimated 5 million children working in artisanal and small-scale gold mines worldwide; however, the hazards are poorly characterized and often underreported. We systematically reviewed the literature on reports of hazards among children as a consequence of such activities through PubMed database using pre-defined search terms. We identified 113 articles published between 1984 and 2021 from 31 countries. Toxicological hazards were reported in 91 articles, including mercury, lead, and arsenic. Infectious hazards, noted in 18 articles, included malaria, cholera, and hepatitis. Six a

BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION: Apersistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is an embryonic vessel that connects the cavernous part of the internal carotid artery with the posterior circulation. Though many are incidental, it is associated with conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia (TN).
OBJECTIVE: In this video, we present a case of TN due to neurovascular conflict with associate PPTA. The close association of PPTA with trigeminal nerve results in increased incidence of TN. Surgical view and technique of surgery are described in the video.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: A 55-year-old male presented

Enzyme stereoselectivity control is still a major challenge. To gain insight into the molecular basis of enzyme stereo-recognition and expand the source of antiPrelog carbonyl reductase toward β-ketoesters, rational enzyme design aiming at stereoselectivity inversion was performed. The designed variant Q139G switched the enzyme stereoselectivity toward β-ketoesters from Prelog to antiPrelog, providing corresponding alcohols in high enantiomeric purity (89.1-99.1 % ee). More importantly, the well-known trade-off between stereoselectivity and activity was not found. Q139G exhibited higher cataly

OBJECTIVE: This study gives details of a rare case of petrous apicitis that presented as Gradenigo's syndrome and was managed surgically.
METHOD: This study presents a case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: A four-year-old female was admitted for failure to thrive following recent sinusitis. Physical examination was positive for right sided facial pain, photophobia and right abducens nerve palsy. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1.3 × 1.7 × 1.4 cm abscess encompassing the right Meckel's cave. A computed tomography scan showed petrous apicitis and otomastoiditis, c

Low-pressure hydrocephalus (LPH) is a rare clinical diagnosis, characterized by neurologic decline and ventriculomegaly that persists despite normal to low intracranial pressure. LPH is typically managed by negative-pressure drainage via ventriculostomy, followed by low-resistance shunt insertion. We present the case of a middle-aged man with a history of hemangioblastomatosis who had spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage. He was treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and then underwent resection of a Meckel's cave hemangioblastoma and whole brain irradiation. One month later, he presented to

Eggs representative of a digenean species were found in coprolites belonged to an endemic deer from Patagonia. Samples were collected from the archaeological site named "Cueva Parque Diana". This site is a cave located at the Lanín National Park, Neuquén Province, Argentina. The coprolites were dated from 2370±70 to 580±60 years B.P. The eggs were ellipsoidal, operculated, yellowish and thin-shelled. Measurements (n=65) ranged from 120.0 to 142.5 (133.2±6.53) μm long and 62.5 to 87.5 (72.6±6.15) μm wide. Eggs were well-preserved and were identified as belonged to Class Trematoda, Subclass Dige

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is the most common type of facial neuralgia with incidence of 26.8/100,000 person year. In general, this scenario is characterized by a lancinating, unilateral, paroxysmal pain in the area of the fifth cranial nerve. Several treatment methods, including the injection of ethyl alcohol or butyl alcohol into the ganglion, the glycerol injection into the trigeminal cistern, peripheral nerve divisions, the radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the preganglionic fibers, and radiosurgery has been used for TN.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A case of a 74-year-old woman patient

We present an unusual case of a metastatic mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) to the pituitary gland. The patient had a known history of MCL for which she previously received chemotherapy. She presented with new-onset diplopia and confusion, and reported a history of progressive vision blurriness associated with headache, nausea, and vomiting. MRI of the brain showed an enhancing lesion within the sella turcica involving the cavernous sinuses bilaterally, extending into Meckel's cave on the left, and abutting the optic nerves bilaterally. Following surgical excision, histopathology revealed the tumor

We captured, ectoparasite-combed, and blood-sampled cave-roosting Madagascan fruit bats (Eidolon dupreanum) and tree-roosting Madagascan flying foxes (Pteropus rufus) in four single-species roosts within a sympatric geographic foraging range for these species in central Madagascar. We describe infection with novel Bartonella spp. in sampled Eidolon dupreanum and associated bat flies (Cyclopodia dubia), which nest close to or within major known Bartonella lineages; simultaneously, we report the absence of Bartonella spp. in Thaumapsylla sp. fleas collected from these same bats. This represents

Bats can carry important zoonotic pathogens. Here we use a combination of next-generation sequencing and classical virus isolation methods to identify novel nairoviruses from bats captured from a cave in Zambia. This nairovirus infection is highly prevalent among giant leaf-nosed bats, Hipposideros gigas (detected in samples from 16 individuals out of 38). Whole-genome analysis of three viral isolates (11SB17, 11SB19 and 11SB23) reveals a typical bunyavirus tri-segmented genome. The strains form a single phylogenetic clade that is divergent from other known nairoviruses, and are hereafter desi

The aim of this work is to serve as a guideline for the initial selection of monomer and solvent for the synthesis of the nitrocompound-based molecularly imprinted polymers, MIPs. Reported data include evaluation of six systems with the ability to form noncovalently bonded monomer-template complexes. These systems are represented by the following aliphatic and aromatic molecules: acrolein, acrylonitrile, 2,6-bisacrylamide, 4-ethylenebenzoic acid, methyl methacrylate, and 2-vinylpyridine. Cave models for selected monomers are also presented and supported by binding energy analysis under various

During 2009, 616 bats representing at least 22 species were collected from 10 locations throughout Kenya. A new lyssavirus, named Shimoni bat virus (SHIBV), was isolated from the brain of a dead Commerson's leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros commersoni), found in a cave in the coastal region of Kenya. Genetic distances and phylogenetic reconstructions, implemented for each gene and for the concatenated alignment of all five structural genes (N, P, M, G and L), demonstrated that SHIBV cannot be identified with any of the existing species, but rather should be considered an independent species within

Cardiac responses induced by motor imagery were investigated in 3 subjects in a series of experiments with a synchronous (cue-based) Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The cue specified right hand vs. leg/foot motor imagery. After a number of BCI training sessions reaching a classification accuracy of at least 80%, the BCI experiments were carried out in an immersive virtual environment (VE), commonly referred as a "CAVE". In this VE, the subjects were able to move along a virtual street by motor imagery alone. The thought-based control of VE resulted in an acceleration of the heart rate in 2 sub
