We report the history of a very old woman with a spontaneous internal jugular vein thrombosis as the presenting feature of an occult adenocarcinoma of the caecum. Spontaneous internal jugular vein thrombosis is an unusual form of venous thrombosis. Doppler ultrasound and Computed Tomography or Magnetic Resonance Imaging should confirm signs and symptoms suggesting thrombosis. Immediate anticoagulation with heparin followed by oral anticoagulation is mandatory to reduce associated mortality and morbidity. BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) present with secretory syndromes or develop one during the course of the disease. The increase in longevity among patients with cystic fibrosis has brought to light comorbidities associated with the disease that are less acutely fatal than its pulmonary manifestations. Modern retrospective analysis has demonstrated an increased risk of gastrointestinal malignancy in patients with cystic fibrosis, with a marked elevation in malignancy rates among patients in their 20s and 30s. Here we report a case of colonic adenocarcinoma presenting as pneumaturia in a 13-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis.

We operated on 138 patients for intestinal obstruction. The different causes are discussed and their pattern of occurrence is compared with that reported from England and other African countries. The 27.6% mortality rate was closely associated with the 28.2% incidence of gangrene. Factors which may lower this high mortality rate are enumerated.

BACKGROUND: A 71-year-old woman was referred to a surgical oncology clinic after CT raised suspicion for a bladder neoplasm. She had previously undergone right hemicolectomy and received adjuvant chemotherapy for pT3N1MX cancer of the cecum. A retroperitoneal recurrence had been deemed unsuitable for surgical resection, and had instead been treated with chemoradiation therapy. Follow-up CT raised suspicion for a possible bladder neoplasm.
INVESTIGATIONS: CT, physical examination, urinalysis, cystoscopy with biopsy, pathological analysis and immunohistochemical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) of the appendix is a rare but clinically significant neoplasm characterized by infiltrative nests of mucin-rich goblet-like cells that may exhibit minimal cytologic atypia. During routine sign-out, we observed a reproducible alteration of the resection margin in appendectomy specimens that closely mimicked low-grade GCA. Following institutional review board approval, we retrospectively reviewed 33 appendectomy specimens to characterize this finding and assess associated clinicopathologic factors.
